Great video!! Super helpful. I do have an unrelated question. Do you know Kanazawa sensei's nunchaku kata Bu ho no kata? I have his book and learned it there but i haven't seen anyone perform it to get the timing.
These jumps are very athletic and require a certain level of fitness. Are you able to re-design the jumps to make it manageble for people with arthritis, so they do not really jump, and hurt their knees further, and at the same time can enjoy performing those KATAs?
Jumps are really only useful (in my opinion) for developing explosive (plyometric) power, and are not actually important for the intent in the kata. So if you can’t jump, just step through the movement while maintaining the technique and intent.
there is one kata that has a triangle jump, I forgot the name been of karate many years but I used to do shotokan with a Japanese sensi and I was blown away with the idea of jumping and changing direction in mid jump to form a triangle??? anyone know what kata???
This question gets asked very often, and I wonder why no-one asks what is the purpose of the stances, punches, blocks or kicks in kata. All techniques, including jumps, have many purposes. Blocks can be strikes, strikes can be throws, etc. Jumps also can have multiple purposes. At a simple level, they are plyometric training, which is essential for explosive power in all techniques. But they are also training agility to maximise the ability to move freely in a fight. Jumps may be defensive (avoiding an attack) or they may be part of an attack. The beauty of kata is that there can be many interpretations.
heian godan is wrong. you are jumping on both legs in that kata otherwise you will get hit by the swinging bo in the bunkai just saying... everyone in my dojo that are doing the jump on one leg gonna feel the bo. and that hurts :) osu
Excellent demonstration of jumping techniques.
This is the best Jumps Instructions available in RUclips!! Amazing Job Sensei Seamus...well done.

The kata is Meikyo. In reality, you swing around your opponent by holding onto them.
Very helpful! Thanks!
Very good, Sensei

If you are honestly jumping over a bo as Bunkai then you should leave this dojo.
The Bunaki to this is an Ippon Seionage a shoulder throw.
