Reviews:
"Beautifully photographed by Karl Struss and capably directed by film editor John F. Link (the second of only two movies as a director), this is one of these movies in which the humans are often forced to play second fiddle to the animals in this case mostly a black stallion named "King". Indeed, although Ken Curtis gets to sing a song (appropriately "Git Along Little Dogies") and spends a lot of time talking about his search for a lost gold mine, we never actually see the mine because the camera is so busy with the "King" and Charlie Hughes sub-plot. Indeed, Curtis could complain that once the wrangling and the singing is out of the way, he has little to do in the picture but play second fiddle to personable villain, Robert Lowery (who has a great henchman in our old friend, Jack Ingram). All the same, Curtis is far better treated than Martha Sherrill, who is prominently featured in all the film's advertising blocks but can be spotted in the actual movie itself for all of about thirty seconds. On the other hand, Chief Thundercloud has a comparatively sizable role with close-ups yet! But then, "Black Diamond", the horse, "Fuzzy", the bear, and company get lots of close-ups too!"

Ken Curtis does his part so very well, in this 1949 film, as a wholesome, fatherly personality, probably genuine to his true nature. 15 Years Later (in 1964), Ken Curtis joined the Gunsmoke regulars, as Deputy Festus Hagen.
“To have friends, a man must be a friend.” 👍
Very good movie. Thanks for posting.
I love this movie. Really like Ken Curtis.
If you saw Ken Curtis in "Ripcord" and "John Wayne's The Alamo" and as Festus Hagen, you wouldn't even know it was the same person. When Curtis made his debut as Festus I couldn't believe he was the guy from "Ripcord".
Still watch him on gunsmoke
love this movie.😊👍👍
The man made horsey sounds are hilarious.
i have seen 8 of ken curtis's 12 talkie b-westerns including this one. the 4 i have not seen are Stallion Canyon (1949), Out of the Depths (1945) (not a western), Song of the Prairie (1945), and Rhythm Round-Up (1945) in case you can find any of those. keep the b-westerns coming!
💯
If only Festus could have handled a gun like that, Matt would never have had to come to his rescue...Marshall Dillon could have spent ALL his days shuttling prisoners to Kansas City 😂
I dislike colourized movies
I dislike those who dislike colourized movies! 😆
Actually, if they're done professionally it's not a bad thing.
But when they're half B&W & half colour through poor poor software/editing. It such a mess!
