Exactly right bro. The Transponders are very important. You may be able to hit the correct satellite but not all of the transponders.

satellite stuff was so cool back in the day. I had multiple dishes on the roof and loved playing around with them in the 90s. It was kind of the internet of the day, a window out to crazy foreign tv channels etc. we were at the same latitude as you guys so big dishes needed :-)

I’ve collected several Shaw Direct and Star Choice dishes. I use them to get 125 W, 87 W, and 97 W. I’ve also pulled in 123 W, 101, 99 W, and 115 W with them. Robbie, you’re right about not getting all the transponders with elliptical dishes. But still I can reliably receive many PBS stations, Newssource feeds, and most of the stuff on G-19. I ordered a 39” dish I’m hoping to pull in 103 W with. Thanks Robbie 👍

You would have great fun here in Morocco where we have an enormous range of East-West satellites. Grocery stores sells the dishes , receivers , lnbs, cables and fittings for about $40 all in ,and every kid over 9 knows how to get the English (American) channels . I have had dishes of 3.5 meters for UK TV but the slightest wind will move it off. I don't bring the receiver and TV out . My trick is to sit inside the house by the set-up and slowly pull the the dish with a long clothes-line through the window until I get the signal.

Hello ottawaoctane. I also have this hobby about satellite TV especially FTA. I am watching your channel because I am curious about FTA Satellite TV in North America which a little different than Europe Let me tell you, here in Europe we use Ku band (10.75 - 12.75 GHz) for both Pay TV and FTA TV. C-Band is mostly for communication, not important unless you are passionate about telecommunication. Here a 38 up to 60 cm dish are used mostly for camping. It works good but not that good with two satellites HotBird 13E and Astra 19E (these two are high power Ku satellites). A 60 cm is much better for camping than a smaller one, gets all the channels from these two but you loose some channels when it starts raining, and also some other high power satellites. For fixed position the 80-90 cm dishes are best for both pay TV and FTA, they are not so affected by rain. But if you want to receive more FTA channels you need an 100-120 cm dish, it can receive weak satellites. I recommend mesh satellite dish, mine is a 100 cm mesh dish , a USALS motor and a high gain universal Ku LNB, and a FTA DVB-S2 receiver. I receive all satellites from 30W Hispasat to 60E Intellsat from my position. Here most of the satellite dishes use universal LNBs. Also there are twin LNBs used to receive two satellites with a single dish (the dish must be at least 80 cm, the 90 cm performs better) The distance can be 3 degrees 4.3 or 6 degrees (maximum). Even in this case I recommend two LNB's and a switch for a better signal. A full Ku satellite TV equipment is affordable for most of the people if you compare to a C-Band satellite TV equipment. The Ka band is for satellite internet

      Same here.
Interesting thing that Canada/Usa and also Russia and some other countries use C-Band.
I have been in this hobby since 2000/2001.
I got an analog tuner that time used it to Astra 19 and Hotbird 13.
Switched to digital sometime 2005 when I got an smartcard to receive these nordic pay channels.
There is a lot fta channels from baltic but mostly Ukranian.
I had cable and there they had in 90s an Russian channel "Horizont".
And what I can see it was really strong sattelite here in Scandinavia.
I saw an old documentary in swedish from 80s about sattelite tv.
But this explains a lot that if there is another standard of the LNB.
I can in my receiver set in Cirkular Left Cirkular Right.
But here in Europe we use Horizontal Vertical.
Im very glad we have these FTA channels. Most of them are in 19E and in German language!
The 28.8 sattelite are really interesting too, but too weak when they use the UK footprint 😢
Is it possible to receive some Russian sattelites in Canada?
Is it possible to receive 1 west Thor in Canada?
Why I ask is that 19E 13E are central europe.
Thor is footprinted to nordic and also Iceland. People in central europe have difficult to receive 1w.
      Somebody here from Iceland?
      Can you receive Canada/Usa?

I just read you could convert circlear dish or dss lnb to linear ku by removing teflon out of throat of lnb.i also heard that years ago back in the 80s I could add teflon to a c band dish to the lnb to convert to circlear to get channels from south America.it might be possible to convert dish reciever to fta if you could find a way to lower the frequencys to 17500 since dish net frequencys are higher than fta.Higher frequencys smaller dish ku,lower frequencys bigger dish c band, same way with antenna, vhf tv lower frequency bigger antenna, uhf higher frequency smaller antenna.

The problem with dishes smaller then 90cm is the amount of signal you can receive. I’ve repurposed 5 or 6 dishes and while I’ve made as small as a dish 500 work it just doesn’t pick up that much, usually only the stronger signals. The best dishes I’ve found to repurpose are the hugesnet internet dishes because they are quite large and beefy. But again they don’t perform as well as a 90cm or larger dish. Also the further north (Or south if you live south of the equator) you are the harder it is to receive signals with a smaller dish. The other thing to realize is that sure there are tons of channels on KU but most English stations aren’t that great, if you have a c-band dish there is far more to watch making a transition from pay tv easier.
Also the advice about a cheap receiver is good advice as there is a learning curve. While I have a meter I find taking a small tv and a receiver with known good channels better because it’s easier to find then peak channels. This is a personal preference. If I had a meter that did video it might be different. Also starting with a minimum of a 90cm dish is advise able as well leaving small dish experimentation for after you understand how to aim a dish.
Personally we use c and Ku as well as an Ota antenna mixed with Netflix and amazon prime saving us a huge amount of money over what we used to pay. Lots of good stuff to watch it’s just relearning what you can watch and where. It’s not identical to the current pay programming. It’s also a lot of fun!

The reason is the dish is required to be larger.
Most Americans and Canadians do not , know about FTA , have never heard of FTA , never want to hear of FTA , flat out do not care about FTA.
Most Americans and Canadians are just plain stupid.

My question is with the right equipment, could you get free satellite internet? A linear LNB with tx/rx and a BUC (to uplink), the right modem, etc.

    • @genesky61
      @genesky61 5 лет назад +2

Internet does not cost that much now days. www.broadbandnow.com .
For me is not worth the effort , free internet via satellite.
And even if you did get free internet via satellite , some one or some ones , along the line will , discover the situation and expose the situation , and there goes the free satellite internet , and then you have to do it all over again.
That can add up to a lot of big bucks.
Any way if for fun and to find out how , I say it is possible , however I will not research the situation and will not do the situation.

Dude I found a dish network receiver
and have dish network satellites on my roof, can I use them if so hook me up where to find the missing pieces for FTA service.
Or should I stop being cheap and by a turnkey system.
