- In this video I show you step by step how to Install a new AC blower motor resistor in a 2003 Chevy Silverado. Symptoms of a bad blower motor resistor are the AC blower staying on after turning vehicle off, fan speed adjustment stuck or not working, or intermittent AC operation.
This install should apply to all 2003-2006 Chevy/GMC trucks and SUVs with dual climate control digital AC controller.

I was a professional mechanic for years, just curious to see how Austin explained the process . He did it better than I could . Great video
I skipped the "how to" part because the symptoms or why the replacement was necessary appears to left out. 😢
Best video for how to do this job. Just did this on my 2005 Yukon Denali with over 300,000 miles. Hardest part was lining up the holes to put the cover back on! Oh, and having to go back to the autoparts store to get a larger wire connector (need the largest ones for the red and black wires and the smallest for the purple wire). Harbor freight wire connectors $2. Advance auto wire connectors $9. In a hurry to beat the sunset, so had to go with $9 connectors. But I'm sure I saved about $300 by doing this job myself. Also, I went with the official GM part from Rock Auto rather than the cheaper knockoffs just because I didn't want to have to do this twice. One more thing. My reason for the replacement: Fan stopped working, or was intermittent. Then I'd hear it running after the car was turned off. Had to pull the fuse in the fusebox under the hood to keep battery from draining. After replacement, put the fuse back and now the fan works fine. Thanks for the great video!
Perfectly describing the process. Fixed my truck under 20 minutes. And I’m not mechanically gifted at all. Great video!!!
Thanks to your video I was able to successfully install the part with no issues.
Excellent detailed video. It's exactly what I was looking for.
Now, onto the dashboard lights video.
Bro helped me immensely been without heat for the past 6 months and it's been getting cold here so thanks again
Im not sure why you would have any thumbs down on tbis. This is the correct way to install the new Factory GM Part. Every other video i reviewed seemed to get this incorrect. Oreillys gave me the wrong part and others could not even find it. So i got this part from Cadillac. The resistor is falable done any other way. Nice job! Im about to do this, so ill follow up. I may have a question or 2, if I do and you have responded ill email you. Good work.
Came out perfect!! Thanks.
This was a very easy to follow video, thank you!
This video was well thought out. Helped w the exact tools required as well as slot screwdriver for the motor electric clip. Two thumbs up and subscribed now. ✌️
Thanks! I just used this to fix my '06 Sierra.
My 2006 Silverado air conditioning doesn’t smell, but it stops working off and on. Had the coolant replaced and didn’t help. Compressor is fine. No leaks. The fan works fine. When the cold air stops on its own here and there, fan still going, the air seems more humid only then (when the cold quits) and smells slightly wet. It’s started the day I got it back from a fuel pump change…
Same!
Great video with awesome step by step instructions. Keep the DIY alive bredren 😎🤙🏽
Order the same part on Amazon coming in tomorrow going to install it this weekend. Thanks
Really like the content, very helpful. One small note if the music wasn't on it would have been easier to hear you.
Nice 👍🏽, thank u sir for the informative info ☝🏽!!
Thank you so much I have a 2004 tahoe and i think this will resolve all my problems.
Big help! Thanks!!
Replaced the resistor in my '04 Silverado last year and the other day the fan quit. Checked all the fuses, put a multimeter on the power wire to the motor and fount it was all good. Plugged the motor back in and voila, it was all good again. Must have been a loose connection to the motor.
Thank you this is very helpful and successful
Most excellent! Thank you!
GREAT video
Thank you!!!
Great Job Thank You! Best one on UTube!
Awesome bro !!!🤪
Do you have to replace the connector. Or can you just plug in the same old ones?
Thank you for the help
My blower doesn’t have a plug. Just got two wires Black and orange. Tried splicing them into the power n ground coming off the resistor and still nowing
Is there a part # on this updated resister? Great video
Thank you
Great video! Is the resistor and wiring different for a dual climate control digital unit versus the non dual climate control? I have the digital dual and think I need to replace the resistor AND blower motor.
Mine is constantly going out. I’ve went to oreilly pretty much every year and had it replaced. Anybody else run into this issue?
Whats the fix for these things burning up?
I thought I had to remove all 3 bolts
Quadrasteer?
I guess they were to cheap to put a plug on the end so you don't have to crimp.
Thats not the reason. They wanted continuity in the wires. You can probably buy a fast clip for both ends, but they could not make a new clip, attach to a 20 yr old clip, all worn on, and for sure make it work. This is the only correct way to do this!
part # for the new resister?
If this part goes bad will the blower motor stop all together please let me know something soon I've been with out air for 3 days I just bought a new blower motor for $106 and ot didn't fix anything thank you
I replaced my climate control module and still no heat and no air.. think this could be my problem
Wat issue will it resolve by replacing that ?????? I wanna know to see if it helps with some issues
I see that your truck it not a Cadillac or a Denali but your control is the control temperature for your ac or heater a straight swap or do I need to change anything
Excellent
Thanks Brother
I replaced my resistor harness but the resistor get hot before turning it on
I need sum strippers 🤣🤣🤣🤣😷 awesome job brother merry Xmas.
Was your ac/heater control screen displaying anything? Mine is displays something that looks like a capital letter L and a letter F. Non of buttons respond. I checked the fuses and relays, and did a recalibration but nothing changed. Would doing this repair fix my problem????
Thank you blessings
Thank you
Could a bad resistor cause a parasitic draw on the battery? I have a 2004 Tahoe with a new battery, alternator, and a new climate control module. however I still get a draw of over 50 mili amps when checking the hvac circuit, I remove the hvac fuse and it drops to 29 mili amps
Curious to this questions as well . Did you ever find out if it could have caused it? I know my blend doors make all kinds of noise andy.battwry goes dead after a couple days of not using it
so my fans dont blow out air anymore is this something that could fix that? or is it a problem with the blower motor Ichecked the fuse and it was blown and i replaced it and it worked for like a day then stopped working again but the fuse is in good shape? i have an 05 sierra
A basic check would be to pull the blower motor out (which is very easy) and check to see that the fan spins freely. A lot of times dirt and dust will get into the bearings and cause it to lock up or draw more amperage and it will blow fuses.
My ac works but the digital part doesn’t how would I go about fixing that
Did exactly what you did and now air only blows out my defrost vents in the dash? Is this common and or normal after replacement? Watched a dozen videos but no one mentions replacing the resistor first. Recalibrate? Fuses? Any advice would be helpful! Thank You!
To my knowledge the blower resistor has nothing to do with changing the air vent flow to different vents, I am sure it involves the main temp console
If you have the digital hvac controls, look up the blend door actuator recalibration process, ive had a simple recalibration fix multiple issues with my 04 Yukon Denali
What gauge wire is the purple one
If purple was just twisted and grounded out would it blow a fuse or resistor
Why would you ground it out? That would indeed wreck something lol. But yes you can twist it well, but why not put a butt connector (or some connector) on it? If the wires are too small, you can just strip more and double it over (bend in half) or you can add some extra wire in the connector. Or solder it yes. Yeah you can just twist them and add a bunch of electrical tape, but they will most likely come loose eventually as the electrical tape wears out from heat and age etc. Best to do it right the first time and much easier down the road yes.
Thank you, my friend. Nice video.
Do you know if this new part also fits the rear?
Wait why is your 4x4 buttons on that side? Did you make your truck 4x4 or did you just rearranged the buttons
Quadrasteer, all 4 wheels turn when that button is on
What is the part link?
It's all bs. My 05 Yukon only works on 90°. I replaced the digital display and it did nothing.
just a crock of crap
It has had the resistor and harness wires all repaired and they went bad again for no reason.
I hot wired direct using 12guage stranded copper wire and 30amp fuse at battery.
Run wire to a new toggle switch then run wire to blower.
Pull plug connector and use either wire for hot. For the other wire Connect a longer wire so you can Ground it to and body metal. Easiest to go into floor , just pull up the carpet and cut out that plastic and foam to drill a hole. Sand paper it shiny. Screw it tight.
On my fused wire it's easier to connect into that red box by alternator. I tried a 20 amp fuse but it blew immediately.
8 ft of wire barely made it.
Also my rear heat went out because I had pulled my battery cables off and somehow that deactivated the actuator inside the back unit. So I just pulled my battery cable off again and put it back on and it works fine each time that happens. Or just pull the HVAC fuse for a minute and then put it back on
What was ur problem? Cause i got a 03 escalade and the a/c only blow some cold when im driving and if i stop the cold stops too. You think this might be the problem?
No. The resistor only controls the fan speed. In my opinion (for your problem), you are low on freon or some other issue. But I DO know the resistor has nothing to do with it.
Any part number for the resistor with the wire harness?
The resistor harness comes with it. Just give GM your VIN # and ask them for the AC Blower resistor. You most likely will not get this fixed through an autoparts store or Amazon, unless you get a reman of an original. Thats just a waste of $$$. OEM on this particular issue says rewire due to faults in the older made resistor. I think this may just be easier for GM to make really.
I don't understand why you cut the wires either? I'm pretty sure they come with wiring harnesses to avoid that step it. But yes thats easy to do lol, but still.
My blower fan will stay on even with keys out of the truck. In order to not drain my batterey I took out the fuse in the relay box under the hood.
Your resister needs to be replaced, you could burn you truck down if not changed
Same here, I didn't have time to install a upgrade one, so I whent to the yunk yard and got an original ($10 bucks) , it works for now.
Thats exactly what mine did, it happened when I went out fishing, like why the hell is the fan still running with the engine off? Lol! Good thing I noticed or we would've been stranded out there with a dead battery, so yeah I took the fuse out. Anyways... for people who don't know, don't buy the generic green looking resistor if you have this digital display, that one is for the analog display only, NOT the digital display as shown here. Make sure to buy one like he has, either one (old or new style works good). Also, pretty sure you can get one with wire harnesses so you don't have to cut wires. Or... why can't you use the old wire harness? I'm going to? I mean it's totally easy, but, unneeded step in my opinion. I guess I'll find out, but yeah be way cheaper just to buy the part instead of "the kit" ya know?
If I get this right it's the blower motor resistor that tells the actuators what to do ? So if my newly installed temperature actuator doesn't change the temperature it could be the blower motor resistor that needs to be replaced ? I only get hot air at maximum setting... Thanks.
The blower motor resistor only controls the speed of the blower motor. The actuators have a tendency to need to be recalibrated once in awhile maybe check out a video on that if you haven’t recalibrated your new actuator.
@@killscapeRS The inside temperature sensor was broken and once I had it replaced the problem was solved.
For the ac switch is it possible to switch from a Manuel to a digital one?
No it’s not worth it. It is possible but you’ll need to do a lot of wiring for the auto temperature
thx
Would this do the trick if im not getting ac cold air...i get hot air just not cold...
No. That is the blend door actuator that is just to the left of the resistor
If it's blowing hot on driver's side and cold on pass side that is
Couldn’t quite watch the whole thing the music distracted stopped. When it started back up I turned it off.
This music...WHYYYYYYYYY
Bro why did you have to do all this cutting wires and taping crimping and shit?
Should of bought one with correct plug n play resistor!!!
Man thank you for this video this was the exact problem for my 2003 GMC YUKON there was 0 air coming from the front vents did what you said and it worked perfectly! I’ve been without heat and A/C for 4 months...also there where no videos on RUclips on how to wire it or this exact problem thanks!
@@Pusheenloveeatingpizza This is the correct updated part.
@@TheGOF EXACTLY
@@Pusheenloveeatingpizza This is the correct, updated GM part. The stores dont sell it usually, only the manufacturer
If I bought the original resistor instead of buying the updated version will that work as well?
Should work just fine! My original resistor lasted 17 years
Mine lasted 16 years. But ive read about remans blowing out in a couple months. Buy the GM part
I want to know how I can put that digital climate control on a truck that doesn’t have it like a 2004 Silverado single cab
Same ! If you figure it out let me know man ! DM me on ig @chrisjr167
You would have to swap the harness from a digital climate control vehicle. You need the temperature sensor that's housed in the headliner on the drivers side for it to work properly.
Why redo the wiring?
The music is annoying
I like the music.
Did you ever make a video with the dash lights?
