He barely knew how to read or write in English and made a living by mopping floors. But everything changed when he challenged some of the top executives in the United States by pitching a million-dollar idea. The son of Mexican immigrants, Richard grew up in California with his nine siblings in a very poor family, whose only source of income came from working in the fields. For him, school was never a welcoming place, not only because he struggled to learn English, but also because he had to endure the daily taunts of his classmates, who laughed at him for his origins. With a life full of disadvantages and driven by necessity, he dropped out of school in fourth grade to start working and help his family. Under the sweltering heat, he worked washing cars, raising animals on a farm, and doing fieldwork. At 18, an opportunity that would change his life came when a friend told him about a job opening as a janitor at the Frito-Lay plant in Rancho Cucamonga, California. The offer seemed great, as he would have a better salary and health insurance. However, the job application was in English, and Richard still didn’t master the language, so his wife helped him fill it out. To his surprise, he was hired immediately. Excited, he shared the news with his family. It was then that his grandfather gave him advice he would never forget: “Make sure the floor shines and let them know a Montañez cleaned it.” Richard promised to become the best janitor and kept his word. Every time someone walked into his area, they would comment on how good it smelled and how clean everything was. In the 1980s, the company started facing tough times. CEO Roger Enrico called on all employees to assume the role of owners. For many, this message didn’t hold much significance, but Richard took it to heart. After almost a decade of cleaning floors, he gathered the courage to approach a salesman and asked if he could help him on his day off. The salesman agreed and took him to a store. There, Richard noticed something that surprised him: There were no snacks that included chili or Mexican spices, a detail that caught his full attention. Weeks later, while enjoying a corn cob with chili he had bought from a street vendor, he had a revelation: “What if I put chili on a Cheeto?” It seemed like destiny was on his side. One night, while working late, one of the plant’s machines broke down, leaving a batch of Cheetos without the usual cheese powder. Richard saw this as an opportunity and saved part of the product to take home. Along with his wife, they prepared a mix of sauce and spices for the Cheetos, creating something unique. Family and friends who tried the recipe were fascinated, which gave Richard the confidence to move forward with his project. However, one major challenge remained: Contacting the company’s CEO. Determined, Richard looked up the CEO’s phone number and, without hesitation, called him. To his astonishment, the executive not only agreed to speak with him but also promised to meet him in person two weeks later. The news caused a stir within the company. Everyone wanted to know who the janitor was that had dared to call the CEO. When the plant manager discovered it was Richard, he scolded him harshly but ordered him to prepare a formal presentation to pitch his idea to the company. Distressed, Richard went home and told his wife what had happened. He had never done school assignments and now he had to make a business presentation. His wife calmed him down and suggested going to the library, where they read a book on marketing strategies that would be of great help. Finally, the day arrived. Richard put on the only suit he had and bought his first tie for just three dollars. There he was, a janitor, standing before some of the most qualified executives in the United States. He presented his idea to the company, and it would change his life forever. The CEO approved the project, and six months later, Frito-Lay launched the product in a test market in East LA. By 1992, Flamin' Hot Cheetos were sold nationwide. It became one of the most successful products in Frito-Lay’s history, generating millions of dollars for the company. Richard Montañez went on to become vice president of multicultural sales and marketing at PepsiCo until his retirement in 2019. He is the author of two books and now gives motivational and leadership talks. On one occasion, a student asked him how he could teach without a PhD. "I do have a PhD," he replied. "I’ve been poor, hungry, and determined."
It’s the best video, despite having a large vocabulary I almost understood the story without subtitles and with them I was missing few Words; my suggestion is to put the vocabulary al the beginning. Thank you very much for the splendid work. See you in the next video.
Great job Juany! Consistent practice is key to improving your language skills. Keep watching and listening to English content, and you'll see your understanding improve even more. Thank you so much for your feedback and suggestion! See you in the next video.

Todas me gustan y aprendo mucho.
Thank you very much my dear Alvis. It's great to hear from you again and it means a lot to know that the videos make a difference.
I'm so glad you connected with Richard's story JP. It's a powerful reminder that anything is possible with hard work and determination. Thank you for sharing your thoughts y un fuerte abrazo!
