I love the big buttons and knobs, it makes it easy to quickly adjust and not have to search for the right button. I'm not some 80 year old that can't see, I just think they are more practical especially off road. Makes it easier to pay attention to driving. Plus they just add to the tough truck feel of the 4runner.
The moon roof and sliding deck in the back are standard (with no other option) on the trail edition, so there's no extra cost (to the buyer for those). Just wanted to clarify. I really liked the interior for its simplicity and the size. Everything is very easy to find by touch. The base stereo's bluetooth works equally as well. It also has voice dialing even on the base stereo. There's still a back up camera for the trail's base stereo, it's hidden in the rear view mirror. Love my 2011 Trail!
thanks, I appreciate it. Frankly its hard to show real off-roading on camera, and I drive these from the dealerships so I can only be so rough with them of- road. thanks for watching! -Greg
Good thoughts on the 4 Runners. 1st gen 4 runners are definitely the most coveted! You are right about axle ratios and certainly that can help, but what comes at the expense of a shorter rear end? (usually fuel economy) I just imagine this latest 4 Runner with a stouter V6 and a 6 (or more) speed transmission (auto or manual...save the manuals!) and still with good gearing!! thanks for watching. -Greg

nice review. I think Toyota sticks with the 5 gears and 4.0L engine for dependability. They prefer tried and proved systems, with better reliability scores. That's because the market target for this body on frame vehicle is still the serious off-roader. It doesn't need much speed or on-road confort, as it needs rigidity, ground clearance, cargo space, etc... As you said, there aren't more of these SUVs left on the market, but there are still lot of enthusiasts who need exactly this kind of cars.

Those are some good thoughts, especially about the auto, but I don't think Toyota restricts the power on their engine to maintain drivetrain dependablity. Loved the review! One quick thing: Don't know if this changes your opinion on the matter, but Toyota has (recently) started intentionally adding large buttons and knobs to their trucks ("work" vehicles) for ease of use while wearing gloves. In other words, its not just an aesthetic choice, but serves a purpose.

I've read that too. Unfortunately it seems to be more their design language and less their mantra for the working man. They're absurdly big. thanks for watching. -Greg
The engine specs are designed so the driver is less likely to break the drivetrain and make the truck overall more reliable. I've always loved the larger buttons and knobs in Toyotas. They're easy to use while driving, so you are less likely to look down and take your eyes off of the road. They're also nice for gloved hands. That shelf is a good idea, but too bad it doesn't slide out a little bit further. I'd love to see a manual transmission for US Market, but soccer moms want autos.
Interesting you mention Toyota engine specs designed for reliability. I was test driving a Grand Cherokee recently . . . mentioned to salesman I was also considering 4Runner. Salesman agreed 4Runner was a great truck but said reliability of Toyotas was the result of lower engine compression . . . he claimed this put less strain on engine so that while greater reliability (less wear and tear) also resulted in poorer engine performance.
Thanks for your thoughts. 1. While Toyota certainly has a reputation for reliability, I think is wrong without any empirical data to imply that the other V6s I mentioned are any less reliable, and make more power. 2. I've always said that the controls work well, there are just not very stylish. thanks for watching and chiming in! -Greg
Its an interesting idea and certainly has some logic to it. A little research shows the compression ratios between the V6's as: Toyota 10.0:1, Chrysler Pentastar 10.2:1, Ford 10.5:1. These are hardly crazy compression ratios and relatively modest differences. The GM "high-feature" V6 b/c of its direct injection uses 11.4:1 (or 11.5:1 in the Camaro). So the question is, do the performance gains from the slightly higher compression ratios offset some possible reduced dependability? -Greg
tough call... You got me there. Probably the trail edition...its a bit more practical. But the Wrangler has more fun potential. Just think I probably wouldn't end up taking off the top all that much. -Greg
Nice review! You mentioned the powertrain needing some updates. I had to laugh to myself, as I'm watching this SEVEN model years later, and Toyota has still made ZERO mechanical updates to this vehicle. People keep buying them, so they continue to phone it in with the 4Runner. Maybe that's a good thing though, as a lot of folks are saying the new 3.5/6 speed in the Taco is WORSE than the 4.0/5speed.
@@elonsus9747 funny thing is, a few days after posting this I went and test-drove and bought a 2013 4Runner Trail Edition, just like the one in this video LOL. I know it's a dinosaur, but I know it's going to still be running in 20 years. It actually drove really nice, I liked it a lot and it suits all my needs for a vehicle. nice review but i think for off road vesicles the reviews should have some hard core off road scenes... but steel good review, i like toyotas but i am a confused with the 4 runners existence i mean what is the difference between a 4 runner and land cruiser ?
Bro your opinions are not accurate for the quality of this vehicle. I have one of these and it is amazing. It is pricey, but they are super dependable and the re-sale value is amazing.
It definitely does need more power. A 4.0L from Japan is definitely capable of more than 270hp. In my opinion, I think Toyota keeps the horsepower there by saving money on cheaper parts, but not necessarily cheaper in value. A supercharger could fix that power issue though! Also, very nice video. I enjoyed it. Also, I completely agreed with the comment about the 1st gen seats. They really do feel like you're sitting on the floor! hahaha
While I suspect marcusdumitru is probably right that Toyota won't make a change on the 2014, I agree with you Greg, that Toyota should go to at least a 6-speed, increase HP and go to direct injection. Most people who drop $40K to do "serious off-roading" are still using their 4R on-road as well (otherwise they buy an older dedicated off-roader). Can't see how above improvements could do anything but make the 4R more desireable . . . it definitely would be to me and many others I know.
Big buttons and big knows are perfect for the truck!!! I have 4th and 5th generation! I like the 5th generation better because it's bigger! 2004 and 2011, they are both sr5!
I have a 2nd gen and I rather drive it than my bmw, there's something about it that I love, maybe the underpowered engine combine with the low gearing and solid construction, I don't know it just feels nice to drive it
Good video. Agree with a good bit of your opinions. -It doesn't feel like the most powerful SUV on the road, but it still feels like it can consistently handle whatever you throw at it. -Agreed the crawl control is noisy and a bit scary with the vibrations the brakes make. It's like the ABS is just running all the time. Would've liked to see a little more off road shots. Check my 2011 Trail (fully stock, tires and all) getting it done which I think I posted as a video response.
I'm not even talking a supercharger. Take a look at the competition, smaller and but more horsepower. Dodge Pentastar - 3.6 liter 305 hp, 265 lb-ft. Ford- 3.7 liter 302 hp, 278 lb-ft. GM-3.6 liter 323 hp, 278 lb.ft Toyota- 4.0 liter 278 hp, 278 ft. lb-ft. So yeah if the Toyota made the same amount of power per liter as the GM V6 (89 hp and 77 lb-ft. per liter) it should make 358 hp and 308 lb-ft.! That's a big difference.
Nice review, my only complain with my '13 4runner...power window buttons too high, brakes too stiff and handling and needs more hidden cargo. I have a 3rd row installed and no air vents on the back my son alway complaining too hot.
1. You nick it for power, but did you consider the reliability Toyota builds in compared to the others? As the old saying goes: Price, Power, Reliability; pick two. 2. You nick it for pick control knobs, and numbers. It's a truck, a body on frame truck that people who are rolling around wearing work gloves and crap might wear. Robust controls that are easy to use with gloves on are a huge plus. 3. No inclinometer like my '84? weak.
Great vid we've got a 11 trail with kdss and nav haven't had a problem with it. I drive a 08 the wife drives the 11 we've had a 02 and a previous 08 we traded for the 11 when it came in. Only time will tell. Typicallly I'd give the Runner the nod as being superior. My curiosity has gotten the best of me based on what I've read and seen being offered by New model Jeeps.
I hope it came across as constructive criticism and not just a smart ass dogging you. Takes guts to get on RUclips and put out legit vids. Good luck with future reviews. I will be watching.
AGREED__-- with THESE-- you're getting VALUE.. (not the best mpg- but hey, can't have everything).. A NEW saying exists because of these. People use to say " Nothing CERTAIN in this life but death and taxes"--- now it's " nothing Certain in this life but death, taxes, and 4runners"...
Just offer exact Tacoma in SUV version with 6spdMT front and rear lockers, front disconnects, A littler higher seating position and a 7 seater with lots of cargo room behind the 3rd row, TRD supper charger, you have a perfect suburban killer Toyota jeep. But these days people lack driving skills and they want up sit in a drone-car, so got real drivers the automotive future is a nightmare.
Good review. If Toyota watched this review. No doubt next generation will be unibody construction with independent suspention on all four corners. If this truck was build to be use more Off Road due to the features it has, having more gears is pointless. If anything I would like Toyota make turbo diesel 4runners. and get rid crawl controls, terrain response mambo jambo crap. Gear driven transfer case and dual lockers would be nice.I like my 2000 4runner because it drives like a Truck.
Screw all of that electronic shit. It just makes the car really expensive. The Fj cruiser and Jeep Wrangler will always be the pinnacle cars of off roaders.
You may want to note when you mentioned the horse numbers, Toyota has fought their low power ratings with better axle ratios since the beginning. That said, I like my 1st gen better. Same tow rating with a class 3 hitch bolted to it, which is available. If power is a problem, plenty of new motors will go into those old trucks! Also, the biggest reason I won't buy the new 4runner is the lack of a 5 or 6 speed manual. I mean, an offroader only sold with an auto... Come on...
I'd LOVE one if it weren't for the MOON ROOF-- I can't stand anything but a solid roof - NO stupid moon roof, sun roof or whatever for me-- just a LEAK waiting to happen or a weakness in the body that I don't want. (NOT knocking them for those that like them - I just don't want them in anything I buy).
A suggestion...try to reduce your arm flailing. You look like you are getting ready to break dance or something. It does not come across as professional and gives the appearance you don't take the review seriously.
I love the big buttons and knobs, it makes it easy to quickly adjust and not have to search for the right button. That's what it was for me...and no I was not born in a Lamborghini, that would have been awesome!

So it don't have a frame its unibody? Lol just a little lost?
You may want to note when you mentioned the horse numbers, Toyota has fought their low power ratings with better axle ratios since the beginning.
That said, I like my 1st gen better. Same tow rating with a class 3 hitch bolted to it, which is available. If power is a problem, plenty of new motors will go into those old trucks!
Also, the biggest reason I won't buy the new 4runner is the lack of a 5 or 6 speed manual. I mean, an offroader only sold with an auto... Come on...
Im happy with my 86
I'd LOVE one if it weren't for the MOON ROOF-- I can't stand anything but a solid roof - NO stupid moon roof, sun roof or whatever for me-- just a LEAK waiting to happen or a weakness in the body that I don't want. (NOT knocking them for those that like them - I just don't want them in anything I buy).
I like my 2015 SR5 4x4 with 3 rows for my kids better.
Very good movie
allright! (my kind of viewer ;)
thanks.
dude seems to suffer from "rapper-hands" syndrome. either that, or he's subconsciously rehearsing his Win Chun Kung Fu all the time.
This is the last of a dying breed if you know what I mean...thanx

This comment didn't age well LOL
U can't compare this to a jeep in 20 this will still be running jeep?? not so much
Check out how capable my 2015 SR5 4runner is off road = '2015 Toyota 4runner at widowmaker". Enjoy..
A suggestion...try to reduce your arm flailing. You look like you are getting ready to break dance or something. It does not come across as professional and gives the appearance you don't take the review seriously.
