I loved the one-shot qualifying in the mid-2000's. Everyone got full coverage of their lap and the pressure was on. Yes, it was probably unfair when it came to weather changes but that definitley made it exciting on a Sunday sometimes! Wish it would come back tbh.

One-lap qualifying would probably be like a rally race where the later runners get a better track to run around with the racing line rubbered in. The one-hour format does allow for more adjustment over the entire session, which I kind of like since it responds to the former point by allowing drivers to figure out where they want to make changes to their strategy.

  • @arkadye
    @arkadye 3 года назад

I also loved 1 lap quali. Also, running Q3 as a one-lap shootout would be totally feasible. The big downside to single-lap qualifying was "how to decide the running order", but as a Q3 session it's easy: use Q2 times and run in that order. If there's rain forecast partway through that could cause some fun as Mercedes try to make it into Q3 in 9th and 10th so they get to run first, before the weather hits. But with many laps already done that day, the running order should also matter less anyway.

In the 1st lap with the drivers were going out in order of the results of the last race, they set a time to then establish the order for the 2nd lap (the actual qualifying lap for Sunday's race) in a reverse-grid fashion. Race grid is set by a score generated from initial qualifying and sprint race.
You get points from qualifying: 20 for first to 1 for last
After 40 minute sprint race the places a driver has gained/lost is added to this score plus one for fastest lap.
After first 5 minutes the driver at the back of the grid is eliminated every 2 minutes. Until three drivers remain.
But the twist is the drivers/teams from first to last in qualifying pick their sprint grid position. You can't pick the front of the grid because it's impossible to gain places, can't pick the back because there is too much risk you will be eliminated before you can gain places! Super mixed up grids and tactics in who you think you can overtake.

The Australian Supercars has the right idea, several practice sessions for drivers followed by qualifying followed by a top 10 shootout where every driver in the top 10 gets one lap, usually as the day warms up or cools down different drivers get an advantage, plus the rain can be a factor, means that you often get to see a wildcard of sorts on pole

I'd be interested to see how F1 would work with Formula E style qualifying. Q1 is four short sessions in which 5 cars each go out and try to get their fastest lap. Group 1 is the top 5 in the championship, Group 2 is the next 5 and so on. After that, Q2 is the fastest 5 cars running for pole. Having the fastest cars go out first adds an unpredictability factor as the track will rubber in as the sessions go on and level the speed gap between top and bottom teams.

I've got an easy fix for 1 lap qualifying. So, to decide the grid order, we do what the WRC did from 2011-13, where drivers went out on a "Qualifying Stage" and then chose their road position (fastest guy picks 1st). But F1 should remove the "Pre Qualifying Qualifying lap" and just let drivers pick where they start the lap with championship order (In Australia we just do the Constructors Championship from last year, so like Hamilton and Bottas go first then Verstappen and Albon etc.)

  • @Dimeocide

I think the best thing for F1 quali would be to keep the Q1, Q2, Q3 format as it is but to make Q3 a one shot quali finale. The order they go out in could be decided by where they finished in Q2. You've got the benefits of the current system which works well but with the added drama and heightened sense of importance of getting one absolute balls to the wall perfect lap to get pole. Oh and getting rid of the ridiculous Q2 tyres starting the race rule, that can't die soon enough!

the problem with trying to change qualification to get mixed up grids is it can't work because it isn't actually dealing with the problem.
What we actually need is a grid of cars with similar performance, then drivers would make the difference and their errors will mix the grid.
everything else is just bandaids on broken bones, it doesn't make a bit of difference.

A top 10 shootout could actually go a fair way if they do it correctly. The FIA could keep the current system of 3 quali sessions with 5 being knocked out in each. But at the end of Q2, the order in which the top 10 are will decide the order they will come out in for the shootout, with 10th going first and 1st going last.

The "Eliminator mode" (as called in video games) wasn't such a bad idea on paper but ... it was based on the fact the cars would stay on track.
Considering the limited number of tires available, the short live performances of these tires, the need to protect the engine ... the cars wouldn't stay on track for long, and counting the in-lap and out-lap was way to much of a lost time to make viable (not counting the fact that you couldn't finish your lap when the coundown hit 0).
The concept could have worked with "qualification tires" which would have lasted longer, but it would also need more time between elimination, which would have pushed the qualification duration to be way longer, and we would have gone back to the problem of economising the engine.

What if we had Q1 and Q2 then use the final Q2 timings to determine the order of sending drivers out for one-lap quali in Q3?
There would be a more competitive aspect to Q2 and it’d be incorporating the old one lap system back, right at the most climactic point of all of qualifying (the shootout for pole).
Imagine the car that topped Q2 having the final lap of qualifying but running wide or spinning off, awarding pole to someone who was initially far less likely to get it. That sounds exciting to me.

    I have an idea.
Q1 determines the fastest and slowest, no one gets eliminated at this stage.
in Q2, each team must deploy their car a few seconds after the earlier car goes out of the pitstop, so the slower cars can get slipstreamed by the cars ahead while the fastest one doesn't. here the last five or 10 gets eliminated.
in Q3 the top grid placements are determined like usual Q3.
this idea is perfect with the 2022 regulations as slipstreaming will be better, reduced dirty air and slower cars can get better chances at the newly proposed Q2 stage.

My initial memories of F1 was those 1lap quali format. It gave so much attention and focus to 1 driver. Not sure 🤔 why that was discontinued but its time to bring it back especially in the interest of climate change.

I would be all for a two lap qualifying format. You have to set the first lap on the first half hour and the second one on the second half hour. The best lap is your time. This roughly eliminates the weather variable of the single qualifying lap and a small mistake ruining a one lap but a driver would still need to put in a clean fast lap. You wouldn't see hugely jumbled orders in the grid but would definitely spice things up for each group because bravery would have significant risk/reward outcomes

I might be too young to remember the 1h- format, because i was born in 1996 and i didn't watch f1 until 2005, but i like the sound of the format. Also The single lap qualifying of the early 2000's also sounds great, cause there isn't that problem that all the drivers complain about, that another driver is slowing their lap. If the sprint race doesn't catch on i wish they would bring the single lap qualifying back.

My favorit would be a combination of Q1-2-3 and a one lap shoot-out. The super pole (?) in Formula E for example is a good thing.
Saturday practice could determine the order in wich they post their laps in qualifying and then we have qualifying with 3 rounds elimination like we have now but with only one lap and each round the order gets switched. Slowest car starts first in the following round.
I would like to see that.

One lap quali is the best format f1 ever had. If I remember correctly, it was decided to cancel because fans on track did not get much action, and access to information such as live timings and screens to see what is happening was limited. Now we have TV in our pockets, so I would love if they bring back this format again.

I still like the idea of a reverse grid sprint race quali. take that reverse grid from the finish order of the previous GP. Undoubtedly it would lead to an exciting Sat race with lots of overtakes, as well as some more jumbled grids, leading to more excitement on Sunday. Formula E has had a lot of success with the negative feedback in quali, where the fastest cars from the previous race set their laps first.

What about for Q3 its a one hot lap attempt each. They go out in the order of championship position (First out First) one hot lap one attempt. Would really test them and they can't complain about traffic. I think it would be good TV and give some slower cars better track quality for a slight advantage, so kind of having elements of a reverse grid, without all the dangers that a full reverse grid would cause.

I'd love to see the 1 lap qualifying return but with a twist. Give the drivers 2 laps or rather 2 rounds of 1 lap and use their best lap of the 2 they set. Let me explain what it is and why I think it could be pretty cool.
One lap qualifying is pretty exciting but it could be better. One issue you run into with 1 lap qualifying is that driver's aren't likely to push their hardest as a simple mistake could see them starting from the back row so it's only natural for them to ease up a bit knowing that a 2nd row start is better than a 10th row one or, even worse, a pit lane start. Giving them 2 rounds of 1 lap could allow for a banker lap on the first go and then an all out attack on the second, knowing that they have a fallback time in case they push too hard in round 2.
To elaborate further though, let all the drivers get a single lap in where they can either choose to post a banker or push as hard as they dare knowing that if they make an error, they have another run to go (provided they didn't put their car into the barriers). Once everyone's posted a single lap, it moves on to the second lap/round where they're given the chance to improve and possibly pip rivals seeing as everyone knows how things have roughly stacked up after the first round. This way, if a driver had been one-upped by a rival that set a lap after him in the first round, it gives that driver a chance to respond in the second run. Essentially like the best bit of Q3 right now where the top drivers end up setting 2 laps, trying to top each other but with the distinction that the action applies to the entire grid, not just the top drivers! An added rule could be that you use the results of the previous race/season to determine the running order for the first round, ergo: Ham runs first followed by Bot then by Ver and so on until everyone's posted a lap (1-2-3...18-19-20). This order would provide a natural hinderance to the fastest drivers by forcing them to drive on a track that hasn't been rubbered in and could also force their hand if they don't want to have all the pressure on their last lap (essentially 1-lap qualifying). But to keep everyone interested for the second round, instead of following the same order (which would have the slowest cars running at the end of the session) you could either reverse that initial order (so 20-19-18...3-2-1) or use the preliminary grid that was set in the the first round and have the slowest driver run first followed by the next fastest and so on. This way you'll still have drama and suspense right up to the very end as the pole sitter likely wouldn't be determined until the very end.
Edit: I just want to say thanks to anyone that read to the very end hahaha

I think that the Formula E format is quite nice where the grid is divided in 4 groups of qualifiers starting from the best of last race. It may be worse because you see the tops first the first times but it may be cool because you see better mix ups in the grid. The top 6 still will be out there at the end.

The only real issue with one lap qualifying that there would often be an unfair advantage to someone especially if the track was dirty the people running at the end had a massive advantage so wasn't always representative or like Japan 2003 and 2005 where the last runners got caught out in the rain for example but then this was part of mixing up the grid. As others had said do Q1 and Q2 normal than do one lap in Q3.

Current format, but with only 1 run allowed for Q1, 2 & 3. Top 10 all start the race on their Q1 tyres so you can't really game the system too much. Keep the 107% rule for Q1 as well (With room for special circumstances when appropriate), and leave it to the drivers to pick when they go for their laps

What about testing/borrowing FE’s qualifying format. Divide the grid into 4 groups with the top 5 drivers in the last race go first (w/ the first race of the season top 5 in the championship last year goes first) the first grp usually struggle obviously because of track temperature and dirtiness. then grp 2 will go next then grp 3 and grp 4 last then top 6 goes for super-pole where the cars go and set a flying lap one by one. we wouldn’t even need reverse grids if f1 does it. I mean with that format Williams, haas or Alfa Romeo could clinch pole or just get into the top 10. Look at the second race last weekend. Sam bird, robin frijns and the 2 nio cars. They started at the front even though they didn’t score a single point the the 1st race

1-lap qualifying would be great to see again. I really want to see what each driver is doing, maybe even have a competent commentator explain it to me.
As an Austrian, I'm used to watching alpine skiing, where they go one by one, and you can really focus on what they're doing. Now, I'm probably as far from a World Cup skier as I am from an F1 pilot, but I feel like I can tell where they're gaining or losing time.
I wish I could say that about F1. I can tell if somebody's race craft is brilliant, in a one-on-one battle, but I'm not really sure what makes or brakes pures pace.

Maybe a elimination type of qualy where everyone does 1 lap and the slowest 2 drop out. And so on till there al maybe 10 or 5 left and let them all do 1 more lap and done. I think there is more pressure on the big guys where making 1 mistake can end you up on 13the place where as now if you mess up 1 lap u go for another one. Note that everybody HAS TO do a new lap of they go trough tho.. So when you are the fastest your time will be deleted for the next elimination. Also make it by order of the championship leaderboard maybe? Meaning the highest placed driver goes last.

I really really really think 1 lap quali needs to be brought in for tracks with huge slipstream issues. Tracks like Monza that had the infamous bunch up and most of the field not willing to go, well it wouldn't matter, one car, one lap, make it count. The more typical race tracks where slipstream isn't as big a deal, yeah do the normal setup.

I'm in favour of putting *sprinklers around the track* and having them *spray the track* with water at random intervals during the qualifying session, format. (Note to any newbies, this format never existed this is just my idea for creating an exciting qualifying session). Lol
When the current (knock-out) qualifying was implemented I thought it was stupid and complicated for nothing. But a few races in made me realize how much better it was closed l compared to the 1-hour qualifying all cars can go out on track session. But yes I agree with Matt, that format gave more surprising results.

I'd be interested to see tyres come into play more in qualifying (don't hit me, hear me out). Keep the same format as now i.e. 3 part elimination however you have to commit to a tyre compound for a session, so example in Q1 Hamilton goes out on Hard tyres, Schumacher on Softs. You then have to commit to that compound for that session. If you're eliminated, you have to start on the tyres you were running in that session. If you make it through, you can't use the same compound in the next session (so Schumacher could use mediums or hards only in Q2 if he went through) then same again for Q3. It could make strategy interesting.. of course it could also be a disaster. I'm not an F1 strategist (as you may have guessed...), just a man that clearly has too much time on his hands in lockdown.

Agreed, but what if if there is rain in Q3. which drammatically changes the laptimes over a span of just a few minutes.
Then your basically screwed if your timeslot sucks.
I'd vouch for Q3 one shot if dry. And in order of Q2 maintaining the tyre rule.
That would give top teams on mediums in Q2 an slightly harder time in Q3.
Example Lewis could potentially only make P6 on mediums. So he has to go out as the 5th car in Q3, Then Max which went on softs in Q2 can go out last.
Giving Max a slight advantage in traction since there is a bit more rubber. At the cost of the slower race tyre.

I'd love to see one lap qualifying with the order of running being the finishing order of the previous race, so if you win the race, you do your qualifying run first for the next race. Might mix things up a bit to keep the top drivers away from that end of session advantage.

  • @StewardRuss

I think Q1 should be a "one lap session" where only the top 15 would go through, then Q2 & Q3 would be the normal elimation we have today. The Q1 running order would be decided on the previous race results. So 1st would be Hamilton and then Verstappen and so on. I think this could give slower team a great opportunity to be fast as the track gets more rubber in the end. Thoughts ??
