NOTE FROM THE BOTHY FOR MALT-MATES . . . Malt-mention edited out in this Vlog as it was offensive and I did not pick up on it in the 'translate' check with Google. Normal Service will be resumed as soon as possible malt-mates.

How dare someone taint the *malt mentions* tradition with offensive language. They should be immersed in e150a!!

Well if that isn't just "naughty" :D
I'm occasionally moved by your self-restraint Ralfy, you salty malt veteran who wouldn't use bad words lightly, even though your audience is presumably of drinking age, bless your heart :)

Having a couple fingers of this as I type! I’ve always been a Bourbon guy, but decided to venture out into the vast universe of Scotch Whisky. I am completely impressed with Glenmorangie! Outstanding palate for $27! Great review. Sláinte 🍻

Bought this in light of your first review (which i saw 2 months ago) and have to say..i am delighted! It IS fresh, it IS simple but it is SO good! Just like glenfiddich 12 it is exactly what it is and there is no shame in that. On the contrary, it is a delicious dram that everyone should have in their collection. It is how scotch whisky should be..it is where it starts, then you go where it can take you! But don’t forget the start!

Drank this last night with Dr. Bill Lumsden at a Glenmorangie tasting here in Vancouver. He said he doesn't add any colouring to it. He is very anti-e150a and has lobbied to get the practice banned.

Got my first bottle ever of this malt whisky at 43% and it DID NOT disappoint..... The very first note to hit my taste buds was a MAJOR blast of banana-----then on to a soft citrus, floral, vanilla, and a sweetness that persists even thru the lovely bitter oak notes that warmly pepper the finish------this opens up mildly w/a few drops of choice spring water-----sweet & sour, cinnamon, clove, ginger as well indeed I find too......Oh what a lovely dram this is... Found a new favorite I did indeed!!!!! GREAT REVIEW RALFY!!! SLAINTE!!!

Glenmorangie is fantastic. When I first started getting into scotch (and any whiskey), I played around with the Glens (Glenlivet, Glenfiddich and Glenmorangie), but have really settled into Glenmorangie as my favorite of the three.

Bought my first bottle today after having viewed this video back in 2018. My go to Scotch is Speyburn 10 at $30 USD, however it used to be 43% and now 40% and the reason I looked for something else and having recalled this video bought the Glenmorangie.. 10 YO Original at 43 % and $40 USD . Very pleased. Thanks Ralfy.

It's good to note, while chill filtered it is done at 45 degrees not 32 or cooler with a loose filter. There's still a little bit of fatty lipids that make it through the filtration. I was told they do not use E150 ( who knows, I tend to trust your experience), the US version is 43% abv. Bang on for us! Great review as always, long time fan!

Couldn't agree more Ralfy. Glenmorangie 10 year old original is one of those (along with Glenfiddich 12 year) that is a foundational member of my collection. In other words - I always have a bottle on hand.My own Malt Mark is a little more generous (85 or 86 depending on the day).

Whenever I watch a Ralfy Review I am transported to the Glen of Tranquillity. I have to say, this is the best Ralfy review for a long while. You have persuaded me to give this whisky another try.
I still miss the old style canister artwork though and find the current one too French Brandy like. The bright orange gold is harsh on the eyes. I found an old bottle of the classic 15 Year Old with the old style packaging a few months ago, gathering dust on a shelf. I snapped it up. They should bring the old kitschy artwork back and dump this French perfume bottle.

This was one of the bottles that fueled the start of my malt journey. After finding new and interesting bottles, my lonely Glenmorangie was cast away to the back of my booze globe and forgotten about. I just pulled her out tonight for a quick chat and im glad I did. Very delicious whisky and the price/quality ratio just cant be beat. Mine is bottled at 43% though. Strange how the ABV is different in certain regions.

Ralfy, when I was working in Hong Kong on my own, away from my family in 2010, it was your original whisky review on this gem that influenced my to buy this bottle. It was the catalyst for me to start a small whisky club among friends of the multi story appartments I lived in. Until this day the club still exists even though I am back in Australia now I meet with them Via Skype. This 10 year old is as true as the day you reviewed it and has not changed a bit. Thank you sir.

Ralfy!! So glad you have finally re-reviewed this one. It was my first single malt and I have always gone back to it as a reliable easy drinking flavoursome malt. There is something simple and complex that I find others describe too with this one. Only downfall in my opinion is that I don't like how it reacts to oxygen over time....guess more excuse to get through the bottle quickly! Cheers Ralfy.

Excellent whiskey for a mixed crowd of men and women, experienced and newbie scotch drinkers. When they are through with this they may never want to try other brands. If you start people out with a standard Islay scotch they may never want to try any scotch again (its happened to me). It's a great summer scotch as has been mentioned below...

I first had this single malt about 4 years ago. I’ve since had the lasanta and the Quinta Ruben. The 2nd time I tried the original was a few months ago and it wasn’t as good as the first time. It was very young tasting compared to the first time. With the 10 year old pushing $45 where I am I’m a little reluctant to buy it again but the 12 year series is very good! (I say reluctant because for $45 I have access to a lot of high end bourbons)

Tasting whisky seems a lot like learning a foreign language. If someone prompts you, you can get it easily enough, but coming up with the smells (or words) on your own is very hard at first. I can get green apples, sultanas, ginger, and fresh fruit on my own, but no way would I have said cola or mint or toffee, until you suggested it. And then it's as if you can't 'not' smell it after that. This is more fun than learning a language, mind you...

  • @Shane4Bass
    @Shane4Bass 5 лет назад

I would normally agree with you Ralfy, but after approximately five years I picked up a bottle of this and although the flavour components are still intact, it is a much hotter whisky than what I remember. The alcohol burn simply destroys the nose. This used to be one of my go to whiskies with its sweet and gentle character, and it certainly did not need to oxidise in order to soften up, but the bottle I bought recently is a very different creature. After this experience, I cannot agree with your comment about consistency.

  • @djbeacon6895

I bought a 4 100 ml bottle sampler pack with this 10 yr original @ 43% and then the 3 major finishes for $30 = sherry, port and sauternes. Great way to sample and decide before buying a full bottle. This original 10 year is my favorite = so mellow and rounded with no distractions. Many places have it at $45 but one place at $34 so I need a dot75 bottle or two. Not as complex or satisfying as Glendronach 12 or Bunna 12 but still want in my cabinet and will drink often. It's comforting to find a reasonably priced bottle that you enjoy.

Ralfy, I've only been drinking scotch less than a year and bourbon and ryes for about 2 years. Recently bought a 4 pack sampler of the GM products and preferred this one to the 3 others. So bought 750 ml bottles of this 10 year and their QR 14 year old. Fortunately the 10 is 43% here in the US. Like you and others say, very nice to start out with and can experiment blending with other bottles. I wish there were more "samplers" available in the US; next will be the 3 bottle Classic Malts Collection with Laga 16, Talisker 10 and Craggamore 12. Cheers!

Ralfy, --- [1] Over the years & watch well nigh all of your reviews, you have become quite a bit more sparing in providing higher grades in your "distilled spirits" reviews & marks. This fact is quite OK. --- [2] In Ralfy Review 21, you gave GM10 an 87 malt mark. In comparing your comments in Review 21 & Review 727, it seems as though your 2018-84 is about the same as your 2009-87. This is also quite OK. --- [3] You seem to be somewhat broadening your grading in the direction of Serge Valentin at Whisky Fun, where his grades in the mid-70s represent quite acceptable whiskys & distilled spirits. --- [4] Thanks a lot for taking the time & effort to produce your excellent Ralfy Reviews. They are a real treat & source of information. I look forward to them each week. Please, keep your reviews going for the next 9, or 19 years, or even longer. --- [5] PS: GM Original, & especially, GM Quinta Ruban & Lasanta are most excellent distilled spirits. They are credits to the distilling are & industry. Thanks, again. Richard :)

Another good feature of a visit to Glenmorangie is the emphasis put upon casks and smelling the whisky maturing in different cask types - fascinating.
If you get someone who says 'I don't like whisky' then try a Glenmo on them. If you don't like Glenmo, then you probably don't like whisky.

    • @chriswitham8736
      @chriswitham8736 6 лет назад

I should add, that when you smell the standard cask that goes into Original then it smells of Jack Daniel's rather than Glenmo. Knowing this, I can now always get a hint of JD from Glenmo 10.

My introduction to Glenmorangie was the Nectar D'Or, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Very much a dessert dram. I then bought a bottle of the 10 YO, and honestly was disappointed. Although it is a very good value at its price point, I thought that the ginger/spice/fruit notes were overwhelmed by the malt/cereal notes. I think another 2 years in the cask would benefit this whisky nicely. But that's just my palate. Ralfy, an 84 malt mark seems quite fair.

I like my Bourbon, and so my first foray into Scotch was Bruichladdich’s Classic Laddie… hated it. I tasted grass and mud (no hate please!) and never got another Scotch. I decided to try Scotch again with The Original Glenmorangie and I love it. I think I’ve unintentionally begun my Scotch journey!

At present I'm drinking a Bailie Nicol Jarvie blended whisky from Glenmorangie, apparently at least 60% single malt. Very nice for the AU$40 I paid!

43% in US. I still like Glenlivet more. But... maybe I just need to spend more time with it.

Cant say I enjoy this one. I understand its dependable but just imagine it at 46%+. I could see it being really so much better? :-)

Was the door open on the bothy? Lots of bird and dog sounds nearby. Must be a nice day there. Incidentally, if the malt-mention came from a Finn, I'd question the mentioner's first name. If it's what I believe, it is not the nicest. Haven't had a drink of whisky in ages, but I still love your videos.

. . . It is not the nicest, so now edited out ! The google translate failed to show what the M-mention actually was, so it's removed.

Ralfy, thank you, as always. How about a review of Glenmo Nectar D'Or? It meets all your criteria and I can't imagine it scoring below 80 on flavor. 12 years, 46%, NCF, natural color! Perhaps slightly overpriced but then I'm sure that Sauternes casks are somewhat scarce, so it seems justified. If you tried it and refuse to review, could you mention that in the comments? Thank you😎

Ralfy I have a doubt is 84 out of a 100 for single malt is same as 84 out of a 100 for blended scotch?

12:30 Still, for all that consistency you gave it 3 points less than in 2009.
Of course, one´s personal grading system changes over time because our taste changes, our experience changes, and we become more discerning over time.

I've had this one a few months ago on a pub. It's good, I got a bit of ginger there, but wasn't very impressed. Maybe it was because I was drinking from a tumbler instead of a proper tasting glass, but I didn't get any particular notes that would make me recognise it on a blind tasting. I'll give it another chance at some point certainly, but for now I'd prefer my Glenfiddich 12.
