I love the star shape. Like yourself, I've always been a Chris Holmes and WASP nut. That said, there is something so cool about the classic Gibson V isn't there? KK Downing, Michael Schenker, Wolf Hoffman back in the day...
Can concur as I have a Rhoads, two Vs (a Hamer one & a Washburn Dimebag Darrel one), two Explorers & two Firebirds (not the pointiest guitars out there but you get what I'm saying.)
@@MichaelD8393 firebirds are huge guitars. And converting a Thunderbird bass with full 34” scale to a baritone guitar is unwieldy cumbersome. I called it The ThunderBeast. You can find it on the reverb “sold” archive. That thing was a beast.
The Flying V for me. Nice to see KDH having lots of fun on a video, in contrast to his more serious (and excellent) industry questioning content. Super guitarist too!
Please dont give KDH a free axe for him to promote your pointy guitars. As a fan, he doesnt need another and to continue to have fun making this great content (hopefully reverse psychology is your achilles heel)
The cheap full scale Paul Stanley model is a great modding platform. I've replaced the pickups, pots, nut and tuners and had it set up as my 6 string B standard guitar (and lower because the DIgitech Drop jumps from 7 steps down to the octave). Thought about getting a better bridge and tailpiece for it as well
In addition to having the best vibes, the V is also the ultimate design for playing while standing up, especially if you like to orient your guitar neck in a more classical (vertical) position like I do. You can even anchor the 'wing' on the inside of your leg for extra stability during more challenging parts if you have a large enough bodied guitar, such as the Gibson.
I love pointy guitars 'cuz they help me stand out. It shows how seriously I can take the instrument if I'm able to play it without the supposed ease of access that curves can provide both standing and sitting. Be it an Explorer-style, V, or Dimebag ML shape, it'll always make me distinct from the "commoners" who use super strats and les pauls. I mean, you can only redo the same shape so many times before it just gets redundant! but pointy shapes are endlessly excellent! I think my favorite one you've got is the Iceman. very Fredrik Thordendal-ish type of look to it, really quite a good build
V and Explorer style shapes have some ergonomic advantages though. There's way less body right above the strings so no need for a comfort carve there, and standing leaves a whole bunch of body wood resting against your leg, so you can tilt the guitar just by changing your stance to make parts easier on the fly. Still not the most comfortable guitars to play, but nowhere near what some would have you believe as long as you work with the shape/weight.
I turn 60 this month and my go to guitar is a 1986 custom Mike Morin ( great amp builder ) Flying V with a Floyd Rose. Chris Holmes is one of my favorites too.
I've been playing an Antoria (Ibanez) Flying V copy (korina '59) as my main guitar for the last 46 years. 19 when I got it, 65 now. Since then I've collected other "V" types, including a Moderrne and a Rhoads style baritone partscaster I put together myself.. I love Les Pauls, Strats and Teles, but I always go back to my Vs.
Great video! I also love pointy guitars, being a left handed player I have had to be patient to get the ones I like in the second hand market. My favourite is the Rhoads V you have there…now I need one for the collection lol.
I thought you hated pointy guitars! Glad to be proven wrong. I'm really taken with that Cream Voltage guitar that finish and design looked really awesome - and of course the Randy Rhoads is always a great looking guitar and sounded pretty stellar with your rig as well. Beir bua agu beannacht!
Great collection! I was a teenager in the '80s when I started playing, so pointy guitars will always have a special place in my heart. And I would take the Rhoads V over the Gibson style in a heartbeat. I'm looking forward to the video on the Cream Voltage. I love the look of both of their models, but with all of that resin and the big metal plate on the back, they have to to weigh an absolute metric ton.
I'm with you all the way. My most beloved are the traditional Gibson style. My third guitar after an Ibanez RG and then an Epiphone Tony Iommi G400 was an Epiphone Korina 58 V. It is the most gorgeous guitar ever. Fretwork, everything perfect. Veneer on the Korina makes it look way nicer than the historically accurate Gibsons for 10k. Put in Tonerider AC2 and now it's my best sounding guitar, and coil splits too and dial markers for that 58 look. Then I got a Gibson V, in red 58 layout so one sided pickguard and in line controls and jack at the ebd of the wing but 67 body with the contour around the neck joint. Really unique and lovely. Had smokin hot 500T and 496R, I have now sold those for more classic PAFs which is my go to unless I uae the Tele with Hot Classics. Surprisingly similar sounding a hot Tele and a low output V. Will be adding the HB 58 style Explorer soon, I bought a 400€ HB it was amazing, 160€ HB (Tele) it's now my main guitar, many mods though, so I gave high hopes for the HB Explorer, black pickguard since my V has white, so I have a little of both. Soon hopefully also finally a Rhoads V, I like those too and they make good cheap ones. I do miss the hot Gibson pickups even though it's not my style so the RR will get Randy appropriate pickups, maybe super distortion or the 500T again. I love pointy guitars. After that kit build of a 67 V in Candy Apple Red with vibrola. I figure I can do it for 500€ including hardware, nitro finish etc... did some luthiering once upon a time so I may as well start building pointy guitars because so few make a good symmetrical G style V. Epiphone has so few models, Gibson Vs should be SG priced but they are more expensive than LPs. Easiest shape to make, no burst no contour, two piece body. Come on Gibson. The Antique Natural was gorgeous and affordable for a Gibson but discontinued. Gah!!! Al my Vs have dings. I actually tipped over a soda sitting on my mate's brand new DSL100 head with the upper wing not two weeks ago. Right onto the glowing EL34s and the transformer. Pulled the plug and let it dry for a week with a dehumidifier. Works fine. Gibson is severely dinged up around the pointy ends... They're so long and wide at the base... But fret access is unrivalled, held properly it's actually the best guitar sitting down and if the strap pegs are mounted in the right place it balances nicely and they tend to be relatively light. Pickup placement same as Les Paul but a tiny bit further apart, so a little brighter on the bridge otherwise tone is a Les Paul. BTW my Nr.1 blues guitar (usually play classic metal) is the 58 V. I mean Albert King!
Pointy guitars are not my thing, but like with most things in the guitar world, I'm glad they're there for the people who like them. It's why there's more than one flavor of ice cream. My favorite of this lot is easily the Hufschmid Iceman. Just amazing craftsmanship evident in that, and the upcycled barn door is cool as hell.
Pointy guitars never have done it for me. I'd feel silly playing one. I'm very much not a rock star lol. But I LOVE your enthusiasm for them. You can tell you really love this stuff just like the rest of us.
I did enjoy that! Not really a pointy guitar sorta guy (it's not about me!) , but I loved hearing about your love for them. I have to admit REALLY wanting an Explorer though. That Cream looks amazing!
I’ve got the white with black bevels version of that RR24 and it’s hands down the coolest and most incredible to play guitar I’ve ever held in my hands, the Yellow/Black one is the rarest of that whole run, nice guitar!!
I'm an old man so I like S-shaped guitars. However, when I look at a Jackson Rhodes or BC Rich Warlock it makes me think of the late 80s, early 90s when I first became interested in guitars, so I have fond memories of that.
I only have one pointy guitar its my 2018 special ordered Alexi Greeny ESP ltd V pleked finger board beautiful dark slick ebony fret board fast an it almost plays itself .Glad i have it cuz not available anymore..You have a suberb collection 🤘🎸🎼🎶🎵 RIp Alexi Lahio..
As a 51 year old Gen X metal head, pointy guitars have a special place for me. BC Rich Warlocks and WarBeast, Explorers and Kelly’s, all type of Vs, etc… That said I also like LP and SGs and superstrats. I like guitars bro.
I liked pointy guitars long before playing guitar myself. I was a kid when i saw a picture in a newspaper showing Hetfield playing an Explorer, and i was like: "this is the coolest electric guitar i've ever seen" (i was aware of Vs since everyone had them in the 80s). After playing my brother's SG my first own electric guitar was a LTD EX-400 and i always have to have some sort of Explorer.
13:19 But of course, on a V, you've simply *got* play Balls To The Wall!! 🤣🤣🤣🤘😎🤘 Funniest thing though - Wolf Hoffmann actually recorded that song (and many others) with his white Strat... 🤣😜 But like you said: Pointy guitars simply look better on stage 🤘 My personal favourite: By Aria Pro-II, the Urchin series: the U60T, U70 and U100! That Gibson V... It just struck me. It has a Chevy 56-59 vibe. I dont think any other guitar encapsulates the futuristic mindset of the late 50's and 60's. People were so, so hopeful and positive back then.
I have like 8 or 9 guitars and I still can’t find one that I like more than my Epiphone Thunderhorse Explorer. Gorgeous silverburst finish, Grover locking tuners, and burstbuckers with coil tapping, it’s just an absolutely versatile beast of a guitar.
I love pointy guitars too, specifically explorer and v shapes and variations. I have a couple of epiphone V's that I love, and a gibson explorer. I would LOVE to pick up a Jackson King V, or something similar. I like Rhodes V's, but the King V's always looked more right to me.
if you haven't gone into lace buckers before, they're worth a deeper dive - what can't they do that other buckers can? Nice guitars and thanks for taking the time to give us a gear vid.
Didn't know that you are a WASP fan, that's such a cool band! And Holmes is a killer guitarist. And I would go for Flying V, that's my dream guitar too. But now as a Judas Priest fan I have one Hamer V (in Gibson shape)
My first electric guitar was a B.C. Rich Warlock. None more pointy. ;-) But my favorite pointy guitar shape is probably the Jackson Kelly. Looks so elegant and cool.
The entry level Ltd Ex were really good at the begginig of the 200´s. Not anymore, they´re just fairly good today, but back then I had the cheapest (Ex-50) and it had some manufacturing failures but a monster tone and playability. Love your blue one. I guess the´re quite hunted on Reverb.
In terms of shape, It's the tri star for me. In terms of spec, it's the RR24. I actually own two of the modern X series ones; the 7 string and the black and pink 6 string... wonder why I bought that one in particular lmao. In terms of other pointy guitars, honestly KDH, if you get a chance to play an old Kelly Star (or hell, any MIJ from that era to be honest, I own a rhoads from then as well), you will not be disappointed. Those things play like a dream and they are my all time favourite star shape. Although the Sammy Duet signiture SD2 is *also* a very sweet looking star.
I have three LTD FXs (yes, the spalted maple beauties), two EXs, an incredible LTD Arrow, two Jackson Kellys, a Warrior, an Ibanez Xiphos, a Kramer Nite V, two Peavey Rotor EXPs, a Peavey Vortex EXP, a BC Rich Warbeast ... Safe to say I'm knee deep in the pointysphere. 😂
Flying V needs to be slung low to look cool eh??? Enter Albert King... One of the coolest and earliest V players! All jokes, love the video and pointy guitars.
Love that tristar! I see there's a hole on the neck near the pocket, is this just because it's a partscaster or is there some intention to it? Thanks and great video!
Love the 70's fender headstock on a pointy guitar. Which says a lot because i don't like pointy guitars. Are they pointy so you can jab the bass player? 😅
13:50 I have the exact same model, and at one point even had two! Insanely good guitars, very light, killer tone, no frills. It's kinda hard to find info / date these guitars. Can you help out a bit with that? (I watched the restring episode, but curious about the serial numbers or a catalogue where these are featured)
I like how your playing is more 80s cock rock than brutal extreme metal. Very soulful sounding. Nice WASP riff when playing the tri star. Of all your guitars, I like the tri star the best. Only change i would make to it change the graphic to flag of Ulster I'll see my way out now
The first guitar I ever bought was an ESP LTD MX-250! It's got that "truck flooring" kinda material on the face of it and I LOVE IT. Funny enough, though, if given the option I'd take that Gibson V over the Rhoads. Probably because I've been a Metallica fanboy since I was like....7, but also cause I prefer the symmetry I think. Though I would also probably maybe someday change out the pickups for some more metal ones. Alas, someday. Regardless, HELL YEAH POINTY GUITARS!
Interesting to see how everyone sees things - I personally don't consider traditional/rounded V's, Explorers, Stars, etc to be pointy, but see pointy as meaning sharp like a Jackson V. I should look into getting a Star shape...
My 2 favorite guitar shapes are Gibson Explorer and Ibanez Destroyer 2/ala Phil Collen. I also have a soft spot for the Rhoads V and the Jackson Kelly.
I know people hate them, but there's something I kinda dig about the Gibson Modern V (over both the standard V and the Jackson style V). Of course I live in an actual mid-century modern house built in the 50s with a lot of 50s vintage mid-century modern furniture, so...
I love my Explorers. I have 4 Dean Zs (2 Floyd Roses, a 2002 '79 reissue, and a 2019 Select), 2 Gibsons (a 1985 with a factor Kahler and a 2019 B2 Tribute), and a custom Kiesel Hyperdrive. I also have a 2008 BC Rich Bich Exotic Classic. Pointy guitars just look and feel faster.
Being left-handed, I had to buy the "cheap" JS32 Rhoads V, which was not cheap. But it came with the "thought I'd learn guitar but then it just sits there doing nothing" buyer's remorse super regret package - a proper Jackson V case, a shitload of picks, a strap, a book of chords (absolutely useless to me because I'm not going to learn 2000 chords EVER, let alone BACKWARDS), and most surprisingly, THE ORIGINAL TREMOLO BAR. And, yes, they are very fun to play.
Out of the guitars shown, which would you go for?
The Rhoads because I'm a big Laiho fan
The Flying V as I already have a Rhoads.
I’d like a go on the Star.
Iceman all the way. Best looking pointy guitar, and that's a particularly good looking example.
I love the star shape. Like yourself, I've always been a Chris Holmes and WASP nut. That said, there is something so cool about the classic Gibson V isn't there? KK Downing, Michael Schenker, Wolf Hoffman back in the day...
Playing a pointy guitar in a small room is like landing a helicopter in a tree 😂
That’s actually a very good analogy 😂
Those dudes that trim trees with giant saws hanging from helicopters are hella impressive
It sounds like you’ve done both. A tip to my hat, and a nod to you, sir.

This was a fun show.
I love pointy guitars and W.A.S.P. too. That's why I own some Warlocks (Blackie and Randy) and RRs and a Charvel Star (with vinyl Bud logo)
Flying V needs to be slung low to look cool eh??? Enter Albert King... One of the coolest and earliest V players!
All jokes, love the video and pointy guitars.
Holy moly that explorer screams! But i would take that Jackson RR
Love that tristar! I see there's a hole on the neck near the pocket, is this just because it's a partscaster or is there some intention to it? Thanks and great video!
It’s a Warmoth neck so that’s where the truss rod adjustment is
My favorite pointy guitar in my collection is my Westone Dimension IV, white with red lightning bolt. I bought it new in 1986.
I like the Rhoads and the King V!
I love you even more now😂😂. I have a thing for pointy basses. I am a child of the 80's so I have an excuse lol.
I'm always struck by how great Active Pickups sound clean!
I like how your playing is more 80s cock rock than brutal extreme metal. Very soulful sounding. Nice WASP riff when playing the tri star. Of all your guitars, I like the tri star the best. Only change i would make to it change the graphic to flag of Ulster
I'll see my way out now
The first guitar I ever bought was an ESP LTD MX-250!
I've always loved the offset V's
Interesting to see how everyone sees things - I personally don't consider traditional/rounded V's, Explorers, Stars, etc to be pointy, but see pointy as meaning sharp like a Jackson V. I should look into getting a Star shape...
I own an ESP Random Star and a Gibson Explorer. I am proud to say the edges don’t have a scratch 😂 a noteworthy feat, I assure you all
My 2 favorite guitar shapes are Gibson Explorer and Ibanez Destroyer 2/ala Phil Collen. I also have a soft spot for the Rhoads V and the Jackson Kelly.
My fav is the BC Rich Ironbird, long live Bolt Thrower
I know people hate them, but there's something I kinda dig about the Gibson Modern V (over both the standard V and the Jackson style V). Of course I live in an actual mid-century modern house built in the 50s with a lot of 50s vintage mid-century modern furniture, so...
Sweet guitars 👍
Warlocks are some of the best balanced, ergonomic guitars I've owned
Yeah, ya gotta have some points. Or horns.😂🤘
I love my Iceman but that Jackson Rhoads is killer.
Aloha,
because you are coming to the point.
Umbasa
"Because they look cool." period
😊
I like the Charvel guitars with the pointy headstock
I love my Explorers. I have 4 Dean Zs (2 Floyd Roses, a 2002 '79 reissue, and a 2019 Select), 2 Gibsons (a 1985 with a factor Kahler and a 2019 B2 Tribute), and a custom Kiesel Hyperdrive. I also have a 2008 BC Rich Bich Exotic Classic. Pointy guitars just look and feel faster.
My first ever guitar was a GX-100 Explorer made by Takamine which you don't see around much anymore.
Sir, sir, SIR, how did you keep a straight face after saying ‘there is a lot of wood there, so I like to keep it hung low’
Cream guitars extraordinary.
