about spoilers from people who know league lore: there seem to be big differences between where arcane's story is going and league's lore. an example is viktor and jayce: in the original lore they never worked together. they may reroute in some way into league lore, but for now arcane seems to be it's own thing
THANK YOU for making this request. I have noticed that so many fans and professional critics don't care to spoil the story of the original material when reviewing the adaptation. They often spoil without warning. I have come to the conclusion that they do not give a toss. If knowing spoilery details about the original material give them an edge, they will spoil the hell out of it. It's not cool. Heavily teasing spoilers is also spoiling in my book.
@@Mic-Mak league doesn't exactly have a story for you to follow strictly in that way though. It's not like a manga->anime adaptation where the source material is carried over faithfully- and honestly League doesn't even have a coherent storyline of its own to even spoil.
@@LordSerpent I hear you, but I can give you a great example of how the show has been spoiled by gamers, critics, and fans who watched it. Jinx. The moment you reveal to someone who has never watched the show that there is a character named Jinx, you have spoiled it for them. Because it is very easy to guess from the pilot episode that Powder will become Jinx, since Mylo insults her with that name.
I LOVE watching RUclipsrs react to TV shows. Seeing their total surprise and bewilderment at twists and turns, and WTF moments, is pure joy! However, for Arcane, the moment I hear the reactor reveal at the beginning that they know there is a character named Jinx, that's the moment I stopped watching, because it means they have been spoiled.
Lastly, I think Netflix did a terrible job with the trailer and other marketing of this show, because they show the main characters grown. We spend a third of the show with them as kids. In my opinion, the trailer should have only showed them as kids. That way the time jump is a surprise! And the glow up of Jinx is a suprise too! Because it was for me, as I hadn't seen the trailer. Many critics spoil the fact that there is a time jump. In my opinion, they shouldn't have.

Spoilers for league stuff!
In the oldest lore, Viktor and Jayce didn't work together. This much is true! They each developed their specialty separately, Viktor with his robot augments and Jayce with his hextech. Viktor approached Jayce and suggested working together but Viktor is also obsessed with turning everyone into robots for the betterment of humanity, so Jayce turns him down. So Viktor decides to steal it instead, leading to Jayce making the Mercury Hammer and raiding Viktor's laboratory to get it back, ultimately destroying it when he saw how Viktor was using it.
Newer puts them in a more sympathetic light and makes their initial conflict about morals, not power. They are friends in the academy, bonding over being the smartest kids that no one else wants to work with. One day they are given a project to help divers reduce workplace accidents. Viktor's ultimate solution is to see the Diver panicking in dangerous situations as the problem and develops a chemtech drug that would increase all of their physical capabilities along with immunity to fatigue...but also make them unable to disobey orders. Jayce finds this an insult to free will since the people above water and out of danger would essentially be controlling the divers. They have a big fight and Jayce tattles to the school, causing Viktor to be expelled without honors. Still even with all that, Viktor is shown in a more positive light of helping undercity kids that are getting bullied (or crippled) a means to fight back with augmentation or cybernetics.
tl;dr Too much detail to ultimately agree, lore in Arcane is very different from league lore.
Ekko carries the torch of Vander in endeavor, Vi carries it emotionally.
Nicely put. Vi has to learn to move on and heal.
And neither thematically.
Ekko is neither. He wants to take the fight to Piltover and the Chembarons
@@Treck533 He's the former. Like the video says, even if the methods are different the sentiment is the same and he is what is needed now.

If that means fighting so be it, but if he can achieve it through building connections and negotiations he's willing to do that as well as shown by his willingness to personally go to plitover and return the hexgem to the council himself.

His scene with Jinx in episode 7 was one of the coolest, most hype and badass scenes I've ever seen but I haven't thought in depth about his character so I'm interested to see what you have to say.

Little Man was forced upon a much more difficult role than he could have ever imagined but the way he rises up to the occasion is simply astonishing. You cannot not respect the dude. He moves the story forward a lot with the happiness of his people always as the main goal. The scene with Vi and his fight with Jinx are some of the biggest "Holy shit" moments from this season 1. Thank you so much for this wonderful video bro :D

One of the things I loved most about Arcane was that you didn't need to know a single thing about the league of legends game to enjoy and follow the story.
I'd take it a step further and say that for Arcane I think it's better if the viewer doesn't know LoL at all.

I like how the Firelights were portrayed as Solarpunk. One of the few anarchist portrayals that actually gives the philosophy actual merit on its own terms
Ekko is very mature, but at the end of the day, he is still a kid who has had to grow up way too fast.
It's been a while since I've seen Arcane, but I do remember that Ekko was always my favourite character. His tragic yet noble motivation spoke to me from the moment his post-timeskip face was shown onscreen, and the unique opening to his episode totally helped build up my like for him. I'm really glad you made a video breaking down his character. Many thanks.
9:43 Jinx/Powder has many mental health issues and one seems to be an almost system personality structure. She can choose if Jinx is in charge or Powder. But when he was fighting here and Jinx couldn’t win at that moment Powder was back on top. He had not seen her even if he saw her body many times. The animation (IMHO) shows it (pre shimmer) in her eyes.
Also, you may notice that this is the first time that he fighters her directly. Until this moment his people keep him away from her. My head cannon is they know he would never kill her and she would kill both of them to get him so they are protecting him from her.

Ekko's reveal was pretty shocking, I had no idea who the leader of the Fire Flies is, but it made sense he is.
Still, the change in the way he behaves is huge.
I hope Jinx will find her redemption in the second season, but I have a feeling Ekko or Vi will need to put her down so that full civil war between Zaun and Piltover won't destroy everything.
I don’t think Jinx should be a character that gets redeemed tbh. She’s pitiable and even to some degree justified but still the bad guy overall.
But, I wonder if they’ll allow League characters to die

There is this story in the League of Legends main canon. It's an Ekko story, and it's considered one of the best and most heartfelt stories in the League of Legends IP. Its called "Lullaby". If nobody minds being spoiled on a potential future plot point for Ekko, I heavily recommend reading it.
Similarly, I would also recommend watching the video "Seconds", which is the video that was used as the big reveal for his character. Again, if you don't mind being spoiled on a potential future plot point for Ekko, I heavily recommend checking it out because it's a brilliant piece of animation

In the game, he mentions he used to have a crush on Jinx when they face eachother.
True, Arcane came out years after Ekko first released, but you can't fault people with a prior understanding of a character for expecting something similar to what they were told, even if it's years prior.
If Ekko was changed to ressemble his Arcane counter part more closely I wouldn't mind, but other than a giving us a Skin, Riot has yet to change him.
@@lynxcool555 I don't fault anyone for expecting it, that isn't what I said. But it isn't reflected in reality, it just isn't in the show. So they should not pretend that their headcanon is reality.
It's wishful thinking. In different circumstances that could've happened, but if the show actually did it, I would lose all respect for it. She's killed his friends.

My favourite character
Honestly when I first watched it I thought that the music vid intro + trippy flashbacks during fight with Jinx weren’t very compelling. It was at the same time too on the nose to ignore what they were trying to accomplish through abstract music-vid type style and yet too rapid to actually give it the proper breathing room to actually feel the impact. If anything it felt like a LoL animation short which abruptly broke-up the flow of an otherwise great narrative & show-don’t-tell storytelling that Arcane already proved it was capable of. If anything it made me long for the missing screen time Ekko & his “third alternative” to the problems of Zaun/Piltover deserved. While I definitely appreciate it a lot more after watching this video I think I wouldn’t be alone in saying that on a first-viewing this can’t be appreciated as much as it should as you’re just trying to take it all in. Ekko’s pain, burden and strength as a leader, are all there in his character but not as heartfelt as the Jinx-Vi dynamic or fleshed-out as the council’s political intrigue. This is all to say I hope the give proper time to develop Ekko & his faction which honestly seemed more interesting in the short time they were on screen than the other powers-that-be in Arcane. We need more creative fantasy that imagines hopeful futures and liberatory forms of living outside of the Piltover:Zaun/Enforcer:Silco duality. Real life is more complicated and I love that Arcane has already shown that. I would just hate to see a chance for taking it to the next level in a way that proves striving for a better world is possible is something both desirable and achievable. The “real world” is too full of narratives that overlook and shutdown such creative potential to dream of another world, and Arcane can be a fish against the tide.
Out of the two factions within the setting of Arcane, if I lived in the world of Runeterra in this setting, I wouldn't join either Piltover or the Revolutionary efforts of Silco's Zaun, as both are in my opinion not worth serving. So the only faction I would join is the firelights. For one their outerwear when they go into battle is not only effective in perhaps intimidating the enemy, but also looks extremely stylistic, along with the fact that each member can make their own mask, indicating how despite the fact that these people are from Zaun, they favor individual choice over a collectivism mentality. This is even further strengthened by the fact that in Ekko's room when he's speaking to Heimerdinger he still holds his passions and interest about technology close to him.
The Firelights as a faction in my opinion are akin to a resistance group. However what also sets them apart from per say Silco's "Glorious Revolution" efforts is the fact that they aren't simply focused on becoming independent from Piltover, but similar to Vander they specialize in Humanitarian acts and Altruism. While some may say that they do not care about Zaun itself, I would strongly disagree with that sentiment as clearly in the beginning of episode four they show clear effort in stopping the shimmer production and helping the citizens of the undercity. But as you said at the same time I don't think Ekko or the Firelights would ever join Piltover in any of their efforts.
Neither are they interested in ending Piltover's corrupt status quo by enacting reform or beginning a full on revolution. And I I don't think people realize how refreshing that is, because I am starting to get quite repulsed when I watch media that asks people to wait for some political reformer messiah to come save them from a corrupt regime that probably doesn't deserve to be reformed in my opinion. (As if seeing thousands of political ads on TV to support the next senator, president, or political messiah which once in office truly doesn't solve anything, wasn't enough. Sorry for my mini rant there but I don't like politics, at all). And I also don't support the efforts of revolution most of the time, unless they specialize in acts of Altruism and Humanitarian efforts instead of acts of vengeance and chaos. And that's exactly what the firelights are.
No doubt if I joined that group I would not only find a sense of individuality, but also a sense of togetherness, a sort of "We are who we are, but at the end of the day we work as a team" mentality. They work to put others interest over their own, but not instead of their own. The firelights also have an amazing sense of culture that one can see in their architecture, or just the graffiti art of their dead comrades. They feel like a freakin family that doesn't just look at you as a comrade but quite possibly like a sister or a brother. Like if I were to loose it all to the enforcers or Silco's goon's, I could find their home base and call it home. The firelights are the best faction in the show and it's hard for anyone to change my mind. And I no doubt would be a tech freak like Ekko and put my personal style into stuff I'd wear on the battlefield. (My mask would be something akin to a Bionicle mask for those who are fans out there).
Well the Firelights don't care about Zaun itself, they care about the people of Zaun which is more important imo. Its what what separates the Firelights as a faction from both Piltover and Silco's Zaun, they put the wellbeing of the people of Zaun as thier top priority which the polar opposite of the "ends justifies the means" approach of Silco's "revolution" but Ekko and the Firelight actually want the people of the Undercity to prosper. Which why they are the best faction by far, they also look drippy af with they're mask and hoverboard combo which gives them extra cool points.
@@smuggrog9821 Really good points. I can somewhat agree, however one could say that Zaun is it's people not the place. Similar to saying that a certain nation is not a place, it's a people. And yes, I forgot to mention that the fire lights and ekko especially are loaded with drip.
@@CoreVin975 Well ultimately the people of Zaun and the nation of Zaun are one and the same. Its just comes down to the each factions priorities and the Firelights are the only faction that seems to care about the people of the Undercity. Unlike Silco that is solely focused on the Zaun's independents and is willing to poison and kill his own people to achieve his vision of Zaun. Hence why I said they care about the people of Zaun, since humanitarian acts is the method they use to actually try to help the Undercity as a whole.
Why aren’t then more people from the undercity supporting Ekko’s group if it is the best choice. Most seem to be sided with Silco.
@@shadowgamer4306 Cause Silco’s is incredibally tempting and is an easy choice. After all the undercity doesn’t really having anything left other than to become part of silcos efforts. They feel like Piltover is both unapproachable but not worth reaching out for because of all they’ve experienced by the cause of them.
I believe the Firelights are the best faction because unlike Silco, they are the real deal, and are dedicated to bettering the undercity instead of pushing for revolution while their world collapsed around them

I always find it interesting seeing kid’s doing what they can for there family but I will say this the more he keeps doing this the more he won’t have any friends to protect his family. Because in war you always have to make compromises with your enemies if you want to win it. Because a man can’t fight the entire world by themselves, for that’s a fools game.🐱
