EXTREME Rust + Dent Repair. Can this RARE Classic Truck Tailgate be Restored? 1948 GMC Restoration
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 29 сен 2024
- In today's video I am going to attempt to restore the severely dented and rusted tailgate on this rare, classic 1948 GMC pickup. This will involve a lot of hammer and dolly work, metal shrinking, mig welding and grinding.

You do an excellent job of explaining the Idiocracy of metal manipulation. In other words keep teaching teacher .
Thanks Kevin!
Turning Turds into Roses! Awesome work.
I’m just about to start on a 61 Chevy tailgate. I don’t have the rust issue u have ,but have the bend happening. This is the only tube channel I could find that showed a tailgate repair great work
Thanks and good luck with the repairs on your 61!
That was a great example of making a usable tailgate out of bent metal. What may not be concourse ready is pretty damn everyday nice to look at and use. You have outdone yourself. Thanks for the explanations, they helped out as well .
Once again the amazing Poundini works his magic. Right on Kyle, nice job.
Good idea on the rust repair, working smarter, not harder. Great job. Thanks for sharing!
Nice work! 🔨🔧🔨🔧🔨🔧🔨🔧🔨🔧🔨
Thanks!
I admire your work you're a true craftsman. Keep saving these old trucks.
Thanks, I'll try!
Thanks for sharing - great content !
Thanks for watching!
Amazing the difference from the starting point . you started with what i thought was trash and have created a clean looking vehicle that if looked after will last many years
Well done
Looks really fine from Spain! 😎
Well done, man. You do great work 👏.
Brilliant job once again Kyle. Hey the wand idea probably came from guys from olden days , they would use a thin stick and turn the amps right down on a stick welder and scratch it along the back of the panel a couple of times to tighten it up. Ive never used the shrink option on my stud welder, think i will give it a go . 6000 rpm on a 9" grinder is what Wray says. Thanks for all the videos on this one build thoroughly enjoyed them all.
Excellent work yet again bro, well done. I'm assuming you Forged it in fire and ice three times off camera because of the safety police aye??? 😂😂
Yup, sure did! Haha
Very impressive, this upload…
Thanks Darryl!
Fantastic job on the tailgate. Looks great. My attempts at tailgate repairs in the past involved a sledge hammer and Bondo. The shrinking disk is probably unsafe at any speed… wouldn’t want any of your good jackets to get wrapped around those. Communism is the greatest fear of all…. So funny, because it’s so true.
Nothing like a V Dub ...
you said unless your Ray Charles, but I am sure even Ray Charles could have seen it and pointed it out to Stevie Wonder. BAHAHAHA!!!!
To call you a master is to really downplay your talents - one of the comments below calls you the "panel whisperer" - the perfect name for you 😁
"My greatest fear other than communism", is correct sir. Nice job as well.
What was the guys channel that you mentioned that did bodywork? 23:35?
Arthur Tussik
The panel whisperer does it again. Your work is astounding, and your explanations make so much sense. Love how you brought the stamped GMC logo back from nearly illegible.
Thanks! I'm glad to hear that some of my rambling makes sense!
Panel whisperer 🤣🤣🤣
The whole project has been fun and guilt-inducing to watch. My truck, a 1950 chev, could stand a few touchups. But I’m watching you work instead.
@@CarterAutoRestyling using that stud welder won't screw up the tool
Fine job right there. I can't believe how you take a totally trashed piece like that and fix it. Very talented!!
Thank you!
Don't know how anybody could be compelled to criticize your work. You are showing us how to do stellar repairs with the simplest hand tools. Keep it up. I will continue to watch for what that is worth.
Thanks Chris!
I'm never disappointed in your work. The tailgate turned out nice.
It occurred to me while watching you work that when most people think "bodyshop" this what they think goes on there. I admire your craftsmanship very much. If someone never lifts a hammer or seamsplitter at least they know why others charge so much.. Great episode 👏
Thanks! Unfortunately people will still complain about money. When I worked at a restoration shop my boss tried inviting the customers to the shop so they could do some of the grunt work, or just watch us work...he also tried setting up a camera to record each days work to show the customer. We also had to take 1000s of pictures of every little task. In the end the customers still couldn't comprehend why it was costing so much and the majority of the cars we worked on never got finished
@@CarterAutoRestyling Maybe that's why so much bondo is used on some of the jobs in less quality conscience minded shops, as compared to you and Scott in Cold War Motors. Each of you display ability that I wish I had, and are true craftsmen.
"My greatest fear, other than communism." I'm still laughin' !
Glad to hear you got a laugh!
Admirable work bringing that tailgate back. Love this channel!
Thanks, I'm glad to hear you enjoy the show!
That tailgate looks good to me! Nice job! Love it!
Thanks Thomas!
I wonder if most people have any idea just how much craftsmanship, patience and time it takes to do things like repairing a panel most would have trashed. Maybe disclose how much time it takes start to finish on some of these projects. Judging by the time I've spent on my 62 C10 I'll guess the tailgate was 7-8 hours or more?
Like my ex wife that tailgate got way more love than it ever deserved.
Have you been shopping at CWM again?
This looks like something Dean would have in stock.🤣🤣
Still it scrubbed up nice in the end. 👍👍
I don't think this tailgate will fit an Ltd!
@@CarterAutoRestyling LOL you might be right. 👌
You work fast. Already finish after the result of yesterdays poll. 😊
The results were never in question as we all want him to finish the truck 😃
Yeah I pulled a little Hollywierd magic to get it done in time!
You know that you're darn proud of your work to sit on it like that. Being a ways older than yourself, and heavier at around (222 pounds of screamin' meat), I would have probably sat 6 inches to your right, and had that thing as straight as a Neanderthal Axe Handle! Keep up that fantastic craftmanship, and have a few sandwiches!
Yet another super job done by you. Kyle looks great. I love the Ray Charles and communism great sense of humer
Thanks Joe!
Nice save, also the fix was free except grinding discs, wire and gas. ;)
And lots and lots of time!
...and my sanity!
Holy Shiznit Kyle. I enjoy watching your channel so much. You have some insanely awesome skills man. Even though the ole GMC isn't completely original. Thanks to your metal working magicianery, she's becoming a awesome daily driver. I'd be proud to own the ole girl. I'd do a few things... mainly driving it would be my priority. Although...she could be turned into a real sweet truck if you felt like doing your metal magic to the painstaking end. From what you started with to what you have right now... She's gorgeous. You never stop amazing me with your skills. Between you an Fitzee y'all could bring almost anything back from it's end. You and Fitzee are my two most favorite old skool sheet metal body men. Love your channel Kyle. Keep up the awesome content. I always look forward to your next video. Keep On Keeping On Brother!!! 👍👍👍
Well for something that was going to be just about good enough it was... rather more than that I'd say. I notice you wear ear defenders whilst the rest of us have to listen to the hammer, and yes I know we could mute it but then we'd lose the occasional pearl of wisdom. We shall continue to suffer!
What kind of primer are you using ? looks like Rust-Oleum and if so can you paint over it with auto paint ? Great video.
Enjoyed this video Kyle and watching you hit your index finger nail on your right hand had to hurt.. Love your work a great sheet metal fab gu and I am learning a lot..
Thanks Gary!
Nice job Kyle! Every single wall tailgate I've ever done is pound the dents down and mud the backside so you can't see the script on the inside of the bed! That's why you have over 13K subscribers and I have only 4! 😆
Thanks Glenn! I may have to steal your time saving idea for a future project!
good job
Thank you!
It's cool how you saved that GMC emblem, sweet...
Your utterly blackened fingernail speaks to me. It says “F#€ken OUCH!”
Looks good from this distance (Australia) I would have given up 41 minutes ago lol, must be the cold weather there in Canukistan....... just kidding great work as usual, I have the smaller shrinking disc, it does come in handy for the 'quick' shrink without messing about with torches etc, until next time Chuck.
The panel looks pretty good from here. I need to get one of those California car duster thing, that way I can keep my scrap metal nice and clean and get top dollar for it when it goes to the metal buyers! Great tip as always.
Awesome.....Again!
what are you doing for rust prevention inside the rolled edges of the panel?
The same as what the factory did. If it was being made into a nice tailgate I'd use epoxy primer
Turned out awesome. What's the next project?
Stay tuned!
Nice job sir. I would love to see your process and thoughts on how you paint/protect your work. Do you use any acid on surface rust? Rattle cans? Rustoleum? Thanks.
My Hero! Even if the tailgate could have been bought new there is something to be said for having all original era steel. By buying all new parts you wouldn't really have an early truck.
Yeah, if you figure out had to grab your footage, maybe do some of these new fangled "shorts", that seems to be all the rage with the kids.
Oh It's a hard pass on the shorts for me! Haha
I really like the lettering on that tailgate. Nice work. Do you have a plasma cutter?
Thanks. I don't have a plasma cutter
Well Ray Charles might've be able to read braille... just saying
From here in New York, it looks great!
I have a lot of the same questions about the creation side of Ewe-Toob. Nothing seems intuitive. I couldn't figure out how to post pictures in what is now the Community Tab. The way I was finally able to get that Community Tab to show up was an accident. When I tried to do a custom thumbnail on a small RUclips short, it made me verify myself again (I guess they want to make sure I'm still me.) After I verified my(Nom de Guerre)self (again) suddenly that feature was unlocked. There doesn't seem to be any sort of instruction manual, which makes sense because RUclips destroyed instruction manuals. I used to love exploded drawings now I've got a fumble through 6 videos & hope that somebody shot the video from an angle to see the screw that I'm trying to see to determine where it is and how to take it out.
. . .other than communism. . .
In the past, I would have encouraged you to come South to the US of A. . .but these days you've got to go a lot farther south. I'm thinking perhaps Ecuador.
Thanks Phillip. Ecuador does sound appealing and I agree, trying to find how to videos about working youtube is a bigger waste of time than trying to fix this GMC tailgate
Nice work. Thanks.
Your patience and talent come through again Kyle. You did another fantastic job!
Thanks for a great video. 👍
Kyle ,again old school ways are the best way!
Thanks Bob!
G,day young fella, very good, very informative advice. Hooroo mate.
Thanks James!
@@CarterAutoRestyling g,day young fella, you are welcome, my young mate. Hooroo
I think the entire truck looks factory fresh and just as good as it did when it was brand new. Very nice work by a very talented individual. Well done!
Nicely done. Possibly a wood bed coming for the truck soon ?
You did it all wrong Kyle. I would have thrown it on the road on garbage day and the garbage truck would have driven over it. Probably would have turned out better. Great work my friend. Interesting what that stud welder can do.🔧🔩⚒
Thanks for the tip Randy, your way definitely sounds better than my approach!
I'm Glad you saved the original one.....
Shrinking disk: I have used it a lot with great success. Your comments are on the mark on several counts. You do need a mega grinder to get the rpm's up to a usable level. Emphasis on mega....not just a bigger than normal unit. The marker for me made no difference with or without. And I wear cut proof gloves whenever I use it. Unfortunately my good friend Wray who sells them does not tell you that you need that funky flange nut that he sells separately and then you need to stack up a bunch of washers in order to get it to screw tightly into the grinder. I use a damp sponge so there is not really any rust afterwards and I do rust treatment always right before epoxy primer anyway.
I don't watch these to see hammer work. I only like to see miracles. Kyle seems to specialize in those. You look at one of these panels, and you see right away that it's got leprosy, and obviously nothing short of a magic wand can save it. Then terms like 'Lost Cause' and 'Junk' come to mind. Then Kyle restores it, and it looks like part of a truck. Pretty cool.
Tailgate came out awesome great work
You are amazing I just get amazed watching your miracles wow ,just WOW
HELLO FROM PHILIPPINES
I remember my Dad back in the early '80's welding a flat plate into the backside of his '69 Chevy truck's tailgate to desperately try and give it some structural integrity. Watching him quench it with water and seeing that plate warp by inches was very memorable. He bought a new tailgate later... Dad is no longer with us, but the old '69 is still rolling along. Dad owned it 25 years, and I have had it for 29! Your '48 should be good for another generation or two!
That's great you still have your dads old truck!
These types of repairs are great for vehicles that have sentimental value that you don't want to put a bunch of reproduction parts as well! Nice work!
How long did it take? 😂
Yes
@@CarterAutoRestyling Yay, just the answer I was hoping for! 😂 How long did it take to think up that response?
@@robinimpey101 Yes
@@CarterAutoRestyling 👏👏👏🤣
So far ive seen two rear fenders that weren't fit to send to China for their garbage and a tailgate that looked like it came off a manure spreader all restored to amazing usuable condition. You should be proud Kyle. Fantastic work!!
If you didn't record these repairs I'd swear you just bring in stand in panels. Just truly amazing!
That Ol’ truck is gonna make one helluva nice daily driver! Awesome Fix-it series, Kyle!
Nice work Kyle. Will that truck have a 100000 mile warranty?
truck looks great!
Thanks, I'm not loaded so I'll give what I can when I can because I like your content and would like to keep seeing more , pls don't buy cat food with money my dog won't talk to me again if you did 🤐
Thank you Nick, it's much appreciated. I won't tell the cats!
Wow, Kyle! That's truly terrible!
Is this advanced technique, or can anyone do it?
I have a claw hammer and a soldering iron.
Sounds like you're over qualified for the job!
You can't fool us with that new tailgate you got off ebay!
Hahah, shhh, don't tell anyone!
That is amazing! I have 2 that look like yours in the beginning. I like the answer to all my questions, YES…….
The California car duster is epic
Hell she's looking very very more than acceptable !!! 😉🙃😎 NZ
You did a really nice job on the truck. Somebody in my area was selling a 1950 GMC, that didn't look nearly as nice as yours for $10,500 U.S. not sure what that is in Canadian money. So don't let it go too cheaply.
Thanks John!
why is it always hard to get rid of and old coat shirt or boots im with you
This is a craft you don't see everyday, most if not all body shops today orders replica parts to put on vehicles. Fantastic job.
Thanks!
Very nice work. Thank-you for sharing. PS My biggest fear is also communism... and who is elected as our Prime Minister.......
I'm thinking your chief Boyardee and you've made chicken soup out of chicken %$&**# , this takes the cake.... "get it" I've seen you do the impossible but that tail gate would have gone in the dumpster at 99% of most shops
Well knowing full well I can get a replacement panel from the Dollar Store. I followed this video intently.. 57 Dodge tailgates are a dime a dozen. Sarcasm a side. Saskatchewan DNR to shop truck, to farm truck. 2 thumbs up I learnt a lot.
So much patience, you gotta love it to give it. I need to get busy on my old rig. Thanks Kyle.
Really like watching you work your magic on these old beatup panels, fenders, doors, and tailgate. The Ol' GMC looks pretty good. Keep up the great work and videos.
Thank you!
There is no better. Be well. We look forward to the next.
It's Perfect, stop worrying, it's just right and looks great, really!.....
You didn't tell me what music to insert during the Timelapse, so I panicked and inserted "It's raining tacos" because it is the only song I can think of (my son plays it constantly). Please don't do that to me again!
The thanks goes to you.I learn from you,and l find it entertaining. I just wish you were my neighbor. I don't want to buy a Chinese tailgate for my truck.
Amazing work bud just amazing and I still say you have the fastest hands in the business 😂 how you can see and do what you do is a knack I've never seen and I know how to work metal well I thought I knew how to work metal
No oxy-acetylene? How about oxy-propane, that is what I'm using right now.
Cue dramatic movie trailer music...against what were surely insurmountable odds, he went into battle...
Glad to see you wear a mask, I guess, for what it's worth Thumbs Up Dude!.....
Mind blown. Thanks for the video. I see now why things take me so long. I'm moving way too slow. I pussed out and bought an original gauge complete bed and tailgate for $1000 USD. I traded a golf cart for a Porsche Boxster that slightly kissed the guard rail. It came with all the parts to repair it except for the rear quarter panel. Can you do a video on repairing the rear quarter panel on a Boxster? I'm sure it would be in great demand. Allen looks tired in the video. My RUclips channel is up to seven subscribers now. I made all my family and friends subscribe under threat of me moving in with them. Thank you for your time.
Congratulations on becoming a youtube sensation! I've only worked on one Porsche and swore I'll never fix another again. Wish I could get complete beds for $1000. They are close to $5000 Canadian
@@CarterAutoRestyling I'm not that far away from you. I'm in northern Indiana. Maybe when it warms up I can hand you parts over the border. Allegedly.
I bet if you welded some legs on it you could get $800.00 for is as a coffee table.. I can see art. Another great job Kyle.
The California Duster might make for a lightweight finishing hammer. Just sayin.
