I was told by my husband the Kirby stopped working. I watched this video and did the process of elimination. Within 5 minutes I found it was the electrical switches. Took it apart, taped it together and it runs as good as new!! Thank you for the helpful video!! I know how much you saved me by not taking it in to have it fixed!! I also enjoy the fact of telling my husband - I fixed it!!
    Thanks Michigan Man!

Thank you, this was excellent. My problem was the on/off switch though I replaced the brushed too. You got me far enough to make that an easy addition. One thing I did as I have in other projects with many steps is to put the screws in separate snack bags with the step I removed them with so that I put the right screws back in the right place. Blessings to you too.

Thank You for showing the switch that the bag needs to engage, how you moved it, helped me loosen whatever had been stuck, stupid (me) turned it on, with the bag 🎒 off. I got covered by debris, but point is, IT STARTED After I changed the power cord. I just hadn't turned the bag hard enough! Covered in debris, never felt such relief! No costly repair! Took me 3 years to pay it off! Love love love my Kirby!

Love the video. Although after taking the vacuum apart and back together 3 times and it still only wanted to go in reverse, my husband finally suggested that maybe some wires were switched. Sure enough after pausing the video and zooming in I saw I had two of the plugs attached to my right brush were in the wrong spot. So if anyone has the same problem, make sure your wires are in the correct spot. 😊

I was getting mine ready to do a shampoo, and tried to turn it on to make sure the brushes worked... nothing.
I was listening to the first part of another vid you did when you said something about the bag is on, everything looks good, and realized
...maybe I need to have the bag on for it to work. I tried that.. nothing, but then figured probably both pieces front and bag need to be
attached. So I put the bag back on AND the front piece and it works. I guess it's a built in safety feature to have to have both pieces in place
I was so frustrated until I figured this out lol.. we have a diamond series G and it's only about 15 yrs old. These things will last forever if they are taken care of.
Thanks so much for the videos, bc even though it wasn't the exact reason, something you said triggered the "lightbulb" and I found out I don't have a broken
    vaccum! lol Thanks!

THANK YOU, SIR! Great advice- it seems to have been that side lever/switch. Our sweeper would only stay on if my toe was pressing the start button. Tell you what, that was some difficult sweeping after the dog sprung catnip loose from the cat toy!!! Anywho, as soon as you mentioned that side piece, I remembered that I had removed that bag part to insert the hose for inflating a yoga ball and thought....yes! I bet that's it. I bet I moved something over there. I didn't see to much stuff in there, but I cleaned what I could and put the bag part back more carefully. So far, so good.

If your power switch quit working, it may be too dirty inside to cycle. Disassemble your vacuum as he does in this video, then remove the motor cooling duct and screen, the power cord cover and plug, and the motor base screws. Pull the motor and switch module out together. Spray lots of electronics cleaner down into each switch lever then work all the switches back and forth; repeat several times. You can also pry up the corner of the switch housing just enough to spray inside with the spraycan straw. You have to repeatedly hold down the front buttons and the boot switch and then cycle the power switch then release the others until it loosens up. After it's clean and cycles correctly, follow up with a spray of light oil. This got my vacuum working without having to order a new switch.

I went back and checked everything and then I realized the interlock switch for the pick up roller was open because the roller was not attached. DUH. Then check the link rod connecting rod to the ON OFF Switch pedal.

Mine (Gen3) is great when it's working, but I swear I've been inside this thing more than every other vacuum we've owned put together. Lots of plastic/rubber parts have worn and broken, even part of the upper aluminum body where a screw sits has cracked. Some of it is now unavailable. We had one of those simpler 1960's(70's?) type Kirbys before with no drive system. I didn't fully appreciate it until dealing with the G3. Basically a motor on a stick, and a thing of beauty. I only retired it because it needed a new beater bar. I may track that down and fix it next time the G3 breaks. Thanks for the video nonetheless, I'm not yet ready to throw this one away.

Great Video... But what was it that told you to go straight to the brushes. Where there other troubleshooting steps that lead you to the brushes. In your experience is it the brushes that are normally the culprit? Thanks!!! Again..Awesome video!!

Can you post a video on how to repair the exhaust gasket? My bag and shampoo canister don't stay on.

Thanks for the video. It was a frustration ending lifesaver. I had replaced the power cord but it still would not come on. I was about to give in and seek professional help but tried reseating the boot again and it worked. However, removing those torx screws is a nightmare. I had to purchase a screw extractor and will give it a try tomorrow.

Thanks for posting this clear brush repair. Unfortunately, after replacing the brushes, it seems that the switch is the problem. Do you have another video that goes as far as the switch replacement on the G4.?

Paul. I figured it out. Just needed to remove the single screw holding the switch in. Remove the power cord from the side. Disconnect the wires from the switch and the switch slides right out. I replaced the switch and my Kirby is back working again. Again, thanks for the clear tear down video. It really helped. I put squares of paper on my table with a snapshot of where they came from from your video. That worked out nicely when putting it back to gether.

Thank you for this video! I have the same vacuum, and although I haven't had a problem (knock on wood), I'm saving this in case I do! LOL These are great sweepers (sorry- that's Pittsburghese for vacuum!) and it's comforting to know I can take apart old Herb the Kirb if I need too!

Thank you so much for making this video. I couldn’t figure out why it would come on whenever I put the hose attachment on. Turns out a little piece of plastic broke off so it wasn’t pushing the buttons in! I tried another hose and it started right up. Thanks!!!

Great Video. Issue was the interlock switch to front attachment. (Gen 2) Switch is in a different place, but has same function.

Thanks! I was able to disassemble the vacuum and after removing and checking the carbon brushes I'm stuck. I have 2 white wires sticking out from the right brush side. I thought they should plug into the two spots off to the right of that but I think that is where the 2 white wires from the light go in. Can you assist with where the 4 white wires should go?
