Absolutely smokeless on startup so cool....As you said earlier someone took care of this before it ended up in the storage yard. The tires even don't look too bad. .The shaft does sound loose but the gear oil might be thick from sitting around. Take Care Jeff
I am amazed at how well it runs... that means it will blow up in spectacular ball of fire as soon as I get it installed...lol. The tires have a LOT of meat on them, but they are branded 2000 as YOM, so I would never run them on the street.
Man it was so neat when I was thinking about the load in 4th and 5th then your text came on in the video. Bottoms up to the Sawmill Virago. Aloha my friend
It sound like an exhaust valve sticking or not seating real good it may need more running to clear it up. It sound great other wise after siting so long. Glad it had spark sometime that can be a hard find when there is none.
Thanks Scott... Good ear! I had the same thought about the exhaust valve.. that tell-tale putt putt throgh the exhaust is what made me think... I still need to do a compression check and check the valves.. but you know I will video what I find. I'm glad it had spark too... there is a LOT of wiring/relays to make this project a pain in the neck.
THORDOX In this case, the exhaust valve on the rear cylinder was sticky from sitting. after a little run time things smoothed out. Thanks for watching.
Does that oil have anything in it for the wet clutch .Like motorcycle oil has. If just going slow through town ,and i leave in a higher gear I get the drive shaft slap on mine too. They like their valves adjusted ,and make sure the exhaust is not sticking a bit. Nice tire
Those early Virago all had starter issues, I had two 85 model 700 and they both sounded like yours.....lol....I bought a shim kit for my bobber and it didn't help much. Some people say to update to a newer model case and starter that is the only fix for them.....keep us posted on your progress,,,,
The clunking sound is normal and comes from the clutch assembly...when the driveline is under load you wont hear anything. With that low mileage there cant be anything wrong with those parts. Just change the oil in the final drive ( SAE 80 or 90 ) and you are good to go. Did you check the spark plugs? Maybe your carbs are not adjusted right...sounds like it. I guess you have all the info's on the specs but here you can find all the info you need: www.louis.de/_40f4de9003d897b4be23202506727045ac/index.php?topic=bikedb&lang=en
THanks for your help/information... At the time of this video, I had not pulled any of the plugs or done any final adjustments on the carbs since the dissassembly/cleaning.
Nah, the flywheel is good. I removed the starter and spun the engine to check. Apparently the starters were a known weak point of this vintage and the bendix spring doesn't kick the start gear out with enough force and it doesn't fully engage (or engage at all).
In case anyone doubt it's really a virago, just hear the starter :D
By the way thank you for the video, my bike also require some love
Thank you for the information you have brought us
Nice work Steve!! It sounds good..nice and smooth and ready for the sawmill!!
Great video!!
Thanks RAY! I think she's a good runner!
Lookng foward to see how this piece of the puzzle fits in , Gerry
Hey Gerry, I am excited to see this project through to completion! Steve

Thank you SIR!!! Aloha and try to stay dry!

Love that. "its not gonna have an easy life" . lol
Just keepin it real. haha. Thanks for watching.
Miss fire could be caused due to a miss timing, mine is really out of time and thinking about opening the engine in a few days.
THORDOX In this case, the exhaust valve on the rear cylinder was sticky from sitting. after a little run time things smoothed out. Thanks for watching.
THORDOX
Looks like you got a good deal.
So far I think so too.. Thank you for watching.

Nice tire
I used motorcycle oil that the Yamaha dealer recommended. I definately need to check the valves on this engine... putt putt putt putt. lol.

Great information about the starter... I definately have to pull it and see what's going on in there.
Take it for a ride!
It will get a quick road test... camera on a stick to record the whole thing.
I see some major cutting in the future, unless after riding it you can't cut it up.
Oh, It's going to get cut-up. I want this mill done and don't have the time/energy to start the search for a power plant again.
Thanks for the video. What year and model is the bike? I have a 1982 XV920J.
OK, I see your next recommended vid: 1984 Virago XV750, so I assume that's what this bike is. Are you still riding it?
Yes, It's an '84. I am not riding the bike, but it still runs like a champ.

did u changed the plugs but still sounds good
Still the original plugs... have not even pulled them to inspect.
k could be a good thing can't wait for test drive
Is there an oil sight on the 81 82 83 blocks as well?
I do not know... sorry
Yes there is. I have an 82 and 83 Xv750.
What size socket did you use
I honestly don't remember... 15mm or 17mm???
The correct Oil Weight for a Virago XV750 is 20W50...
Thank you.
They are great Bikes, I've got an '81 XV750H... Just did an Engine Transplant, it's now a 920...
What year? The starters for these early 80s Viragos are complete garbage.
1984
How u chdck oil on 95 viagro
There is a sight glass on the left side of the case with high and lo markings. Check with the Engine cool and the bike upright.
Missing teeth off the fly wheel much?
Nah, the flywheel is good. I removed the starter and spun the engine to check. Apparently the starters were a known weak point of this vintage and the bendix spring doesn't kick the start gear out with enough force and it doesn't fully engage (or engage at all).
nah, it's a virago thing
