Yes! I currently have somewhat long hair, but any time I wear it short, I do the exact same thing between haircuts. It's a "must" for me, when I have short hair, to keep the neck and line-up clean and sharp!
Easiest way to make your haircut last longer is to keep fading the sides whenever they grow. The hair on top takes way longer to grow to the point you will actually need to trimmer it just a bit with scissors and that will be once per month at most. The sides and back I would say every week.

Yes exactly, when you see your hair getting messy just get a side fade and some back, leave the top as it is, do this for next 2 salon appointments.

Works. But if you're used to shampoo, it'll take a little longer for your scalp to adapt. It'll release excess oil for a while.
