he was dood. bill was there to bust out the lols when he knew something was funny. you need someone to just laugh at funny things on the panel. that breaks all the ice.
The halcyon days of soccer punditry in Ireland. We had it so good, no filters, agree or disagree with them but always interesting. Brady's defense of Wenger was brilliant and spot on.
God rest Bill, he played the ordinary man, so well, and he was way smarter than that. But that's why everybody loved him, he just asked the questions that everyone wanted him to ask.
God love him. He was my hero from when he came down to us after York all through the years of disputes, ducked tackles, great passes his team-mates couldn't read, abuse from other supporters who valued journeymen like Harry Cripps way above him, his period of exile when he worked as a barman and the eventual departure for Clowntown. And Only a Game is still the best book about football. Period. Oh and I'll never forget the look of injured innocence on his face just after he kidney punched that git Trevor Hockey just in front of us. That and, less happily, the notorious team photo with the wardrobe malfunction. He has always been a dodgy wee bugger and long may it continue.
Gary Neville said that Alex regretted that he hadn't signed Gerrard because he is Scholes and Keane rolled into one. Manure Utd fans grossly overrated Scholes. If he had played for Liverpool during the Gerratd period he would've been anonymous.
Imagine if we had football panel of Eamon Dunphy, Graeme Souness & Roy Keane. That would be dream for football fans to watch them calling out what it is.
Don't always agree with Dunphy by any means, but some of his one-liners are undeniable gold. "If that was a concert, you'd boo." "He's got more form than the train robbers." One of the rare pundits who dares to call it how it is with Steven Gerrard as well.
I always remember before the 2002 world cup RTE done a preview of the tournament on the evening before it started and Eamon Dunphy in it said it was a shame that two of the greatest nations in world football were out of contention in the upcoming world cup. Brazil- the great teams of the past were gone the Brazil team now scraped through qualifying and were useless, Ronaldo was finished. Germany were in the same boat, forget about them no leaders a bunch of journeymen. The world cup final that year was Brazil vs Germany with Ronaldo top scorer including two in the final!!
Great panel, Giles, Chippy and Dunphy makes it, he says what others only think but would not dare say. Even back then Dunphy was right about the FAI, taking the Irish soccers fans to the cleaners.
At Murdoch Towers, their job is to sell the game. It's the same at BT.. At the BBC, they're not much better. The one pundit who does shoot his mouth off over here is Robbie Savage, who is condemned as a know nothing idiot, but he's never afraid to admit when he's wrong. Chris Waddle also shoots from the hip, but he's only on for the biggest games. I envy the Irish. Dunphy, Giles and Brady often look like they're going to start a fight, and they don't spare poor Bill O'Herlihy if they don't like what he's said. It's great TV.
Eamonn is all over the place for me. When he goes on his rants where he says messi is finished, or that higuain is an expensive donkey, it's laughable. But when he talks about the Italian team, or Juventus, or when he criticises the EPL, I love it and it makes perfect sense.
18:35: "They're the champions of England, and they did nothing right to get there". The most correct thing I've ever heard Dunphy say. Mancini still is a total spoofer really and bad news for Inter now. . .
Re the Dutch team statement, In the excellent documentary called an impossible job re Graham Taylor there is a brief dining scene that featured black players and white players on seperate tables, it always struck me. I ended up putting that to natural gravitas. But it was still surprising.
I don't think for one moment that he was ever interested in being controversial for ratings. Agree or disagree with him, this is be what punditry and journalism should be. Challenging and thought provoking and thinking outside the box. A pure genius.
Tells it how he thinks it is as he's often ranting about nonsense but still entertaining. I will say, one of his long running rants I have always agreed with...hes been calling it out for at least 20 years at this point. The culture of Irish football. Hard work and commitment is all good but you need to remember about playing a bit to. We dont need to play like barca but there needs to be a change at grass roots in how kids are taught. Relax, hold onto the ball and not been told to pass it the second someone is 5 yards away like its a game of hot potato. It starts here and that breeds a lack of composure under pressure right the way to the top level. Its why countries ranked 50-100 places below us knock the ball around us.
Knowing what we know now about the FAI, it is quite possible they would have appointed Terry Venables. But Dunphy's take down was so captivating at the time that they may have reconsidered. I remember watching it at the time.
God be with the days. The panel was often the main event and the match an afterthought.
how can you not like him? he's just gold
Don't care either way, just curious, but is Dunphy half cut in a lot of these clips?
@@TommyCeltic definitely lol
He slags English off but was happy to live there absolute prick
@@TommyCeltic abso fuckin lutely
A national treasure. Those guys will be missed big time. 2/3generations of Irish football fans have had it good with these lads. Golden generation
bill was a massive part
he was dood. bill was there to bust out the lols when he knew something was funny. you need someone to just laugh at funny things on the panel. that breaks all the ice.
His was also to piss them off at the right time too. Provoking them with his seemingly innocent questions
conor lumsden lumsden he was a master conductor to be fair to him , He’s hugely missed the panels gone too serious with out him
Ahhhh Bill
Bill was the orchestrator. RIP Legend
''You've jumped over the Fence baby ! '' Classic Dunphy
You're lucky to have this guy - in England we have to put up with Jermaine Jenas - zzzzzzz.
Poor you he's retired now 😢
Get eamo babbiii back, the rest are a fucking joke especially darragh
It's improved a bit last few years in England on Sky at least. BBC will always be a joke.

The halcyon days of soccer punditry in Ireland. We had it so good, no filters, agree or disagree with them but always interesting.

The chemistry between these 4 is great. Particularly Bill and Eamon.
Great watchin this, Love Eamon, his Pocast is fantastic
Love when Dunphy says baby
I always loved that Dunphy called things as he saw them, he didn't give a flying fu(k what anybody thought.
God love him. Eamon a one off, never predictable but always funny when he delivered. More often than not the panel were more entertaining than the match itself.
Bill, Liam, John, Eamon. Were unreal there missed hugely
RIP Bill
Brilliant compilation - god we so miss the wonderful days of Giles and Dunphy and the peerless Billo.
"Gerrard he's a nothing player" haha love Dunphy
FOUND OUT TONIGHT
Ah I think Gerrard was overrated. I take Alex Ferguson view, a very good player, but not a top player.

Hahaha Goodnight Bianca. I love this man!!!
Eamonn's analysis is brilliant .... he got it right at least 95% of the time .... by far the best pundit around.
“Ronaldo isn’t a great player”
@@sm7baller435 He did say he got it right 95% of the time so..
Bill, John, Liam and Eamon the panel of my childhood. Will never be topped.
You know this guy is outspoken when Graeme Souness sits next to him subdued
The RTE lot actually have a laugh and give honest opinions rather than cliche riddled trite.
English coverage is so bland by comparison.
Zanzibar Breeze come on,Jermaine Jeenas is gold,a great analyst... for when youre drifting off to sleep.
Brilliant, just brilliant. What a legend

"This fellow Ronaldo is a cod"....pmsl 😆😆

Eamon is definitely entertaining. He comes out with some garbage but he would be great crack to go for a pint with.
Until he starts signing
You could cut the air with a spoon when he's going off about Noel King
@Leeroy Smith That it's really tense. The other lads seem uncomfortable with his blatant honesty.
Hate him or love him he’s a national Treasure!
From 09:43 Brilliant. "It going to be a long 45 minutes... the lads in Joy have asked to put back in their cells..." :)
Lol he wanted Gibson in the team and criticising trap for not picking him and then he called him brain dead after the euros 😂😂😂
