  • For this video, I wanted to do a spin off my normal business tips for makeup artists series and tell you ways that you can earn more money as a makeup artist! As stated in the video, money should NOT be the main reason why you want to become a makeup artist. I made this video to help out those that are struggling in getting started in their careers or want to build their clientele.

These are all great points! Especially being passionate about being an MUA. It TRULY shows when a person is in it because that is their passion vs someone who is there just to make money.
    Thanks for another great vid!

Definitely some good gems in this one. My state regs are like yours. I was considering getting my esthetician license but would have to go at night/part-time. I decided to hold off & look into makeup academy schools that offer certifications recognized by my state. I'd still have to go at nite &/or wknds. I'll give it some more thought after watching this video. Thanks so much!

Thanks girlie! I feel like going to a makeup academy to get certified is much better since it’s specialized for makeup artists! Glad you enjoyed the video :)

Yes!! It's so frustrating when you do SUCH a great job on a look and the photos don't turn out right :( Thanks so much for the compliment on the thumbnail! I had a little too much fun creating it lol

In Australia here we have websites & Apps that can help us as Makeup Artist to get works. We just have to join them & make a profile. Also I join in Facebook Group for HMUA, Models, Photographer & Stylists. Even I’m a qualified Hair & Makeup Artist, im weak on hair to add more skills i signed in some hair online course. The competition here is so real here..

That’s really handy! I’m not sure if we have websites like that around here, but that would be amazing for makeup artists!!

Hahahaha please note this wont be the buisness to make quick money with PERIODT!!! Ive spent waaaaaaaayyy more at this point then the clientele I have AS OF NOW. However I understand it takes money to build what I need. My speed sucks and I have a party of 8 coming and I'm trying to figure out how in the hell am I going to complete this 30-40 minute per person? I have a friend/assistant helping me clean in between and just stay on top of time but yeah my nerves are all over the place about it.

It's definitely VERY slow getting started! As I mentioned, I'm in my third year of freelancing and it will still be another 2 years before I can probably go full time with it. And yes, it's a HUGE investment upfront when you start and it will take some time to gain that money back.
What is your timing right now? I know when I first started out I took about 1.5 hours for each person and just kept practicing! My tip would be is to find out what area of the face takes you the longest and try timing yourself on that part alone. For 8 people when you are first beginning, you may need to hire a second artist. I never took over 6 when I first started.

Katherine, using multi tasking products can save you time & money. Example: bronze using deeper toned concealers or using bronzer as an eyeshadow and lip contour, preparing your brushes per person really saves time too. Lately im on a “less is more” mentality. I hope this helps :)
