- Nikolai Karlovich Medtner (5 January 1880 [O.S. 24 December 1879] - 13 November 1951) was a Russian composer and pianist.
A younger contemporary of Sergei Rachmaninoff and Alexander Scriabin, he wrote a substantial number of compositions, all of which include the piano. His works include fourteen piano sonatas, three violin sonatas, three piano concerti, a piano quintet, two works for two pianos, many shorter piano pieces, a few shorter works for violin and piano, and 108 songs including two substantial works for vocalise. His 38 Skazki (generally known as "Fairy Tales" in English but more correctly translated as "Tales") for piano solo contain some of his most original music.

1:18 at the bottom of the first page, it reads in Russian: "Please do not consider this "opus" my own composition, but only an unsuccessful improvisation made on request."
Whoa...Mr.Medtner must have been an immeasurably modest person.
Thanks for enlightening me with your knowledge.
@@Nickee_Sonicjinn This is more like a momentary (and uncharacteristic for him) strike of an imposter syndrome.
It is true that some moments in this set are not what we usually expect of the highly intricate and ingenious Medtner. Nonetheless a beautiful 'improvisation' of much 'success'
Mammamia, vorrei essere io una musicista che compone improvvisazioni "fallite" come queste!!! Che musiche struggenti! ❤❤❤ Bravissimo il pianista! 👏👏👏🔝
Wow and right as the best passage of the piece plays out. Crazy standards
No. 1 -- 0:17 Allegretto commodamente
No. 2 -- 3:50 Andante gracile
No. 3 -- 6:41 Tempo di valse
No. 4 -- 8:39 Andantino tenebroso
Great stuff!
Wow! And WTF is going on here? These compositions are of the highest order. I'm left somewhat bewildered. Why haven't I heard of this Nikie before? Wonderful stuff here. And beautifully played. Thanks all around!
This is so beautifull, why is Medtner so underrated, he is the GOAT!
What a pianist Geoffrey Tozer is! Is there any piece he cannot play? And play beautifully! Please listen, on you tube, to him playing 'Reminiscences de Norma'. by Liszt. Be prepared to be spellbound.
Rachmaninoff considered Medtner the greatest composer of their generation and from there 4 pieces, it's easy to see why!
Yikes, gotta question Rachmaninoff's judgement.
Well of course there was no chance that Rachmaninoff would say the greatest composer of the generation was himself due to his horrible lack of self-confidence.
"horrible lack of self-confidence." How do you know this? Or are you being facetious?
His lack of self-confidence is shown by the fact that he needed to see a therapist, Dahl, in order to be able to start composing again after the failed premiere of first symphony, just for example
+A. Gulliov, Well, Rachmaninoff would've been wrong again even if he said he was the greatest composer of his generation. Heck there are three other Russian composers alone in front of Rachmaninoff: Stravinsky, Shostakovich and Prokofiev. Schoenberg had a greater influence on music. And if we are comparing the works of composers written in the early-to-mid 20th century (when Rachmaninoff was active), then we confront Debussy, who wrote several works that put him up there with Stravinsky, even though many think of Debussy as inhabiting the late 19th Century. A good argument could even be made for George Gershwin. Then there is the strange case of Charles Ives, who -- in my opinion -- is the greatest composer America has produced and who is only equalled by Stravinsky and Debussy.
Ah, glad you have enjoyed the Medtner's ! :D Thank you !
I'm still very new to this composer, so... yeah. :\
Also, op23 no.1 of Medtner is now my new favorite Medtner piece.
I am hearing Scriabin sonata no 4 in that first piece 😂 live that
Шикарно.
