Celtic Mythology - An Introduction to the Tuatha Dé Danann

  • A short introdocution to one of the most important races in Celtic Mythology - the Tuatha Dé Danann. These were the old gods of Ireland, Britain, and much of Europe, and their tales have been preserved for us in ancient manuscripts first written by Christian monks over a thousand years ago.
And if that isn't your thing, then maybe the scenery is - I'm on top of An Cruachán, a mountain between Kerry and Cork in South-West Ireland.

I became a taxi-driver in Dublin a year ago and my very limited knowledge of Irish folklore and mythology has become very useful to the fantastic tourists we receive. It's made me hungry for more and to top up what was taught to us 40yr ago in school.

Thank you so much for this indepth history lesson! I am a descendant of the Madden family from Cork but my family have lived in Aotearoa/New Zealand for many generations and aren’t very clued up in our Irish culture. I am Māori too so learning about my Māori culture always makes me feel more full yet more empty knowing I’m missing out on other beautiful parts of myself so thank you very much for this video. A lot of people who have celtic heritage have blue eyes 👀 which by a strange DNA mutation first appear in what is now Syria. So all blue eyed people are distantly related to the people of that region. Tis interesting alongside stories of the Celts arriving in old mythologies but could have arrived via the Nordic regions in more recent history. Fascinating stuff and thank you for this fab video!

Recently, archaeologists have said that the mass migration of the Keltoi(or other groups) did NOT go to Eire, as per the tale of the Milesians. For me, that doesn't sound logical. I'd love your take on this.

Still a god of war. Many Cththonic deities were still gods of the underworld or "otherworld", but they weren't seen as "evil" or "dark" forces entirely, they were closely associated with rebirth and regeneration. A "war god" plays a largely symbolic role, their purpose is much deeper and older than that relating to war and so-called "warrior cultures"

If I can ask you a question, and if it's not a dumb question, what do you think of the way Thor, Asgard and the like are portrayed in media like the Marvel cinematic universe? Does it offend you, with them being rewritten as aliens or whatever?
I've been interested and inspired by Irish mythology for quite a while, and I am planning on writing the de Dannan into a fantasy series. I keep everything as close to the ancient manuscripts and recent understandings as possible, but I am going to plan to change their origins (which aren't actually explained very clearly anyway.) But despite being a Christian, I highly respect others' beliefs and never want to offend anyone, in case there are those who still practice Irish paganism. After all, I know there are those who would see my beliefs as nothing but old mythological stories as well.
I just wanted your opinion. :)

    • @HeathenMetalhead221
      @HeathenMetalhead221 6 лет назад

The HackingBurger I'm not too big of the Marvel version of this to be honest... I mean when I first got into Heathenry I kinda started to spite it because of all the inaccuracies to be honest. But as I progressed in my studies, I realized that it's just entertainment and it wasn't necessarily trying to be disrespectful as I once thought it was. I see it more now as a homage rather than exploitation or a parody (it might be exploited now but when Stan Lee originally came up with idea, you can tell he had a deep respect for the myths) and a great way to introduce people to the myths. I just don't like it because its just not for me (Im not that big into super hero films in general). I mean as far as the Norse gods being "aliens" goes, I'm not too big of a fan of it. But it's not the most offensive things I've heard. One of the sources we use for Norse heathenry (The Prose Edda) describes them as being descendants from the battle of Troy. Seems absurd but it was done so it wouldn't raise suspicion of a "different god" in a very Christian time
Honestly, if the old gods of Celtic paganism inspire you to be creative I think it's wonderful. JRR Tolkien was heavily inspired by Norse gods and myths when he created Lord of the Rings and he was a devout catholic. My only advice to you is if your basing it directly off the myth, make sure you have great knowledge and understanding of the myths before you start taking creative liberties. Make sure things work within the universe and make sense. If you do that, I don't think you need to worry.
Good luck with your story man :) it's sounds like it'll be a worthy read!

      Thank you so very much!
Tolkien is one of my biggest inspirations, and I adore his philosophies on "mythopoeia" or "myth making." But that's the ironic thing. To create his myths, he looked to preexisting mythologies. I guess if there's one indisputable truth in the Bible, it's the part that claims, "There is nothing new under the sun." LOL
Anyway, yes, accuracy in how I present them beyond what creative liberties I take is of major importance, hence why I'm starting research with videos like this. I'm also a history buff, so naturally this carries over to the weapons and armor of my world and how they all must have grounds in actual documented history which I put time into researching... But I digress. :)
But thanks again for answering, and sharing some of your beliefs. I wish you the best, friend!

I finally heard that Buddha was actually blue eyes and caucasian. Today I read in a autobiography/ translation (Thurman) that Tsongkapa has blue eyes (he is like second Buddha to tibetans). This has been little talked about. The only himalayan people I met with blue eyes were kashmiris (known has good business people with incredible blue eyes). I have heard that sanskrit texts talk about Tuatha De Danann, so wondered if they are these genetics. I am unwell now so perhaps others can follow up..

Tuatha de Danann, a son of Javan (Greece) was called Dodanaim or Rodanaim, who inhabited Rhodes and the Dodecanese Islands, it's very possible Danann is a reference to Dodanaim from the table of nations in Genesis 10. Javan is said to be the father of the maritime peoples. Javan's other sons were Kittim who inhabited Cyprus, (city of Kition) Cyprus still exists today, Tarshish which is Britain and Elishah (Aeolian Islands) it would follow for Ireland to be a son of one of these maritime people.

great video fella, as an irish lad now studying ancient history in the uk its always amazing to realize how much mythology our little island has easily comparable to any other much larger ancient civilisation. I wondered if you could recommend any books about the different imvading races?
ps: your about 10mins from where i grew there

Wasn't Balor actually Lugh's grandfather? Seems as though I remember reading that somewhere...

This was marvelously informative, though I couldn't catch all the names as I took notes. I'll need to find texts to accompany what I've picked up here. Thank you.

The sun god Lugh is represented in Spain by the city of Lugo, in Galicia in the Celtic northwest.

Great video. I wish this had been an optional subject in the leaving cert. because I spent the whole of secondary reading books on Irish myths & legends instead of what I was meant to be doing.

Im trying to locate my ancestry. I've heard that the Griffin's settled both Kerry and Cork.. I believe they were welsh at one time.. but, I see you are standing between both Counties...lol... I cannot get back to our location, the line just stops with 3rd great grandfather in Eastern Carolina.. many Irish came and settled here The Griffin families were some of those... Great work by the way, been studying this stuff for awhile.. I became a pagan in 1976... I am 57 now... so. they are gods I know..
