  • The name of this song may seem a bit odd, but there is a story behind it. And the song itself is simply a masterpiece. Every single member of the band was at the top of their game in this one.

If you want to continue with this album..."Hand of Doom" should be next. It is a "warning" song about the use of heroin. Specifically about the Vietnam soldiers they witness returning form the war hooked on morphine and then falling into heroin addiction. Side note...the song following Hand of Doom goes right into an instrumental called "Rat Salad"...they often played the 2 together on tour. It features a lot of Bill Ward drumming.

Toni Iommi wrote most of the music on Sabbath; that's why plp call him the father of heavy metal; of course Butler (bass) and Ward (drums) are a great rythm section; (butler wrote the lyrics) Ozzy's contribution were most on vocal harmonies. Again most of the riffs you hear from other plp Iommi did it first. Try "spiral architect" "supernaut" or "wheels of confussion" great songs. Nice work again guys.

All right!! One of my favorite Sabbath tunes this is. I love that groove. It's such a good jam. Coach is right- Bill Ward kills it every time. I've loved this song ever since I first heard it in high school in the 70s. Yeah I've read that it was a gang of skinheads wearing combat boots that attacked Ozzy and Geezer one night, so they wrote a song about fairies wearing boots as payback! Next song I recommend from this album is Planet Caravan. It's so mellow that you won't even believe it. I think Mrs. Coach would love it. Love your channel guys!

Sabbath has a concept progression for each album and each of the albums as a whole advances the story of the band. The first 3 albums have song topics that are more general or cautionary in meaning. Volume 4 is where they really begin to write about themselves. The songs are the script of their lives. Once Dio takes the microphone, the entire sound changes. Not saying it's bad...It's just not this.

That drum centered intro is slick. I really like the ... is it syncopation? I'm not sure, but how to a poorly trained ear, the beats seem to come almost at random! Whatever, it's wonderful!

Any of these early songs like Fairies Wear Boots and Hand of Doom, you can usually find good live versions from the 1970 live in Paris concert, if you're interested in checking those out. But I agree, with the comments suggesting Hand of Doom. It's a warning song against the dangers of heroin use and also illuminating the drug problems that a lot of soldiers had returning from the Vietnam war.

Likin' your journey with Sabbath - they are AWE-INSPIRING. I'd love to see you react to some of his solo work too! The first two albums are *incredible* and feature the glory that was Randy Rhodes (mat he rest in peace). You've GOT to listen to tacks like: Revelation (Mother Earth); Mr Crowley; and Diary of a Madman. To be honest, the rest of those albums, Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman, are also filled with golden nuggets - Suicide Solution, Crazy Train, Dee, You Can't Kill Rock & Roll (Which Coach will LOVE and agree with!)....

I started listening to Sabbath in the 70s and there was a trend for rock bands to use controversial labels or albums covers to scare parents and church leaders and excite kids. It was a big marketing tool at the time and it sold a lot of records. The Beatles were one of the first groups to use this method using backwards lyrics and music and creating mysteries around certain songs with hidden messages. Basically the more the establishment at the time freaked out the higher the profits for bands and record companies.

In polls there are bands consistently at the top. Beatles are always #1, but 2-3 can vary between Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. The 1st actual Heavy Rock song I heard (my dad was a big Elvis fan and that’s all we would listen to) was ‘Iron Man’ by Black Sabbath. Changed my musical direction. The Beatles hands down are the most influential band. Zep influenced all R&R and Black Sabbath are the acknowledged fathers of Heavy Metal. I saw the original band in 1978 and it was an experience. Bills drumming, Geezers bass line, Tony’s wailing guitar and Ozzie ominous vocals were amazing. There was nothing like the original but Ronnie James Dio came close. Other suggestions - Sweetleaf……..Snowblind……Paranoid……..Sabbath Bloody Sabbath……..War Pigs…….and of course Iron Man. Ozzie did reunite with Black Sabbath and they produced the Album -13 which has the original Black Sabbath flavor. Enjoy the ‘trip’.

Blues based bands breaking into original heavy rock was a product of the late 60's/early 70's. Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, ZZ Top are all great examples of the same roots growing in different directions.
I was in school band as a drummer and school jazz band as a bassist so I paid a LOT of attention to these bands during these releases. Personally felt some American bands like Ted Nugent filled the gap later until the west coast busted out. RUSH is like other bands in a league of their own.

have you considered reacting to ozzy's solo material after Sabbath? you seem to like his voice.

We've probably heard most if not all of it, as it was popular in our circles in the 80s. Although surprisingly Black Sabbath was not.

This is what I found about the song. The skinhead story dont make any sense. "The song came about when an incident occurred where Geezer and Ozzy were smoking cannabis and saw fairies in boots running around a park, but the most known story around the song was that the band got attacked by skinheads (the skinheads being the fairies in the song), but it's been proven to not be true."

I would like to be the 1st to say I am not ruling out what you have read either. I always thought it was about an experience they had with drugs and did a little poking around. Quite a few places have the skinhead theory. Its just my personal believe that the drugs story seems to fit the song much better. Keep up the great reactions!@@CoachCastTV

I have never heard the story about the skinheads before, having been 18 years old at the time of this album I had always believed that this track resulted from smoking to much dope & hallucinating on acid ! could have been wrong ?

Not sure if there is truth to it. It's been mentioned in the comments and found on some websites, but may not be true.

Yeah I’m not buying into the skinhead thing. Looked out a window saw a fairy dancing with a dwarf. Doctor says smokin and trippin’ is all that you do. The song is about an hallucination on drugs. And you’ve GOTTA check out Ozzy’s solo stuff! The first two albums with Randy Rhodes on guitar are a must! 💯
