I'm glad that Suzy was not seriously injured. Thank you for not letting pride prevent you from sharing this video as will help the rest of us sailing novices learn something.
Great to watch these as i am going through the same learning curve. Good that Suzy not injured but that incident is the exact reason i installed a topping lift. Think you meant that when you said back stay. I come from a climbing and airsport ( skydive and paragliding ) background. Therefore are used to always having a safety system in place. My trailer sailor had no topping lift so had a uncontrollable boom until mainsail was raised and vang had tension applied . When I am sailing I now just eases the tension on the topping lift so not to effect sail shape but leave it attached as a safety line should anything go wrong with my main halyard. I am after a jaguar 22 ( uk version of catalina )for my next trailer sailor so watch your sailing adventures and maintenance work with great interest. Keep em coming
Thanks. I added a Boom Kicker which supports my boom as the Catalina 22 didn't come with a topping lift and that was some BS dealing with having to have the boom on the backstay tether until the sail was raised.
I just added a topping lift after not thinking when I was lowering my main to then watch the boom crash to the cockpit. The topping lift was super easy to install.
I would have done the same but really didn't have the means to lower the boom so used the boom kicker. I have also began to lower the main and had the boom start to lower. The harder thing for me was trying to connect it to the back stay and then having the wind catch the sail and turn the boat, so having the boom and main sheet free to move a little is key!
Thanks. I was looking at the supports that go from the bottom of the boom to the mast. It would be nice not to have to steer exactly into the wind to raise the sail, or have to hook and unhook the cable off the back stay! Future project for sure.
@@AdventuresInParadise Get a topping lift line from the top of the mast to the back of the boom. You can lift the boom out of your way at anchor and it will hold the boom up while you are lifting the sail. IMPORTANT, get rid of that boom support line connecting the boom to the aft stay. That is a accident waiting to happen (even in you video the mainsail was out of control. If it would have been windier or you were in a tight anchorage, there would have been an accident.. I have seen it many times where the skipper forgot to disconnect that line and found him/her self with the boat out of control. Once the sails fill you can't disconnect that line and you have no control . It will literally cause you to jibe out of control or the wind will lay your boat down.
Yes, the episode where I take off the outboard was just last month, and I'm almost done with the repair. We think August in Florida is too hot to sail, but we should be attempting our first overnight next month and will make a video. So far, it's been more fixing up than sailing, so we're ready!
Adventures In Paradise awesome, it’s definitely been hot! We are dropping our Catalina 22 back in soon, we’re just over on the other side of the state in Hollywood!
No plans at the moment. Maybe for the next owner. As of now I just want to keep her scraped clean. We will start sailing more this fall and I'll decide. Right now I'm doing a lot of other maintenence.
My daughter got bonked once similarly, though it was in a convertible (car) and the top's rail had broken. Incredibly, she was wearing her hair in a bun, and the bun prevented impact against her head. Maybe Suzy should wear her hair in a bun ... On top ?

I'm glad Suzy is ok. Thanks for sharing this incident with us to hopefully help us avoid some similar event in the future.
Suzy is a great first mate...a real trooper. Glad to see that she wasn't injured. The perfect partner for this adventure. Go Suzy!
"Time for the first mate to get beers" I think that the hat makes you her cabin boy mate.
thanks for loading these fine adventures. Very enjoyable...
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
A boom Kicker on a C-22 is awesome. We think it is better than a topping lift. Worthy of the cost.
I agree and also installed one on our new O'day 28. The only thing the old topping lift does now is make noise.

hope that Susy is okay...looked harmless enough, but that probably wasn't the case for your 1st Mate!
Best not to let your sail rest on the shrouds…. Glad no one was hurt. Yikes
Hard hat zone
I see my self in this video :)
Life will get a lot easier if you add a topping lift for the boom. I imagine you already have by now. (Jim's Little Boat--Catalina 22)

That's why you always sit to windward, boss.
Yea. I installed a boom kicker now, so my wife isn't fearing the boom anymore and it's made things a little easier.
I added different cleats to my main halyards on both my boats after slippage like this happened and people got hit in the head at least once
Glad shes okay something like that can you pain for years. lol
A friendly suggestion, try to avoid associating sailing with drinking beer. Better to wait til you're done sailing & secure...
Holy moly! Glad you two are okay 👌 Do you still have the boat?

Do you think you'll have Knot Enough hauled out of the water for a complete bottom job?

Haha! Well, now we have a boom kicker so that's no longer a possibility.
A hair helmet :)
p.s. this will be you and Susy soon! We'll be first to volunteer as crew members! ruclips.net/video/wcSI3QkrCHA/видео.html
Finding out how the BOOM got its name- the hard way! #takingonefortheteam
Ouch, that's funny !
Have you taken any sailing lessons???
No, but after having sailed her for a year now I've learned a lot. Lately I've been learning about sail trim now and testing/practicing it.
