The Real Versatility Of Godzilla - Deconstruction of Godzilla and Blackarooni's Video

  • I don't know what Blackerooni was thinking when making this. But let's rip into it.
    Kaiju, something more important to me than anything else.
    Particularly, Godzilla. A character who has changed much through the many years he's been in film.
    I've heard about this video, and some of you were asking for me to give my thoughts on it.
    Blackarooni's video was difficult to watch because I couldn't tell if it was lack of understanding, or something worse. So, I'm going to give my thoughts, and try and correct the record, as many of the other Godzilla creators have.

    FINALLY! Someone who understands Monsterverse Godzilla's character! AND THEMES!!!

      Oh just you wait, we've got a lot of things planned for MV Godzilla, we cover him a lot in the other videos on the channel.
      characterization for Godzilla's a complex thing, his personality might be different, but that's the result of character growth. He is always atomic power incarnate, just the way that's handled differs from movie to movie, with more added themes thrown in. GMK and Shin add more layers of penance for it's WW2 actions. It's why he's such a great character, he can be anything, and everything.

    I honestly use Godzilla as a form of motivation. Because no matter what happens, or what his intentions are, or what role he plays in the film, he always moves forward. Through pain, loss, confusion, and hatred, Godzilla never stops moving forward. He gets up when he falls. When life pushes him, he pushes back with everything he can. Even in a situation where victory is impossible, he goes down swinging. That’s why I love Godzilla.

      I agree, godzilla is tenacious, never backing down or giving up, but I'd argue a monster that fits the theme of perseverance better is gamera. Both in his films and irl. He always pulls through no matter how many kaiju stand in his way, no matter how badly beaten, no matter the injuries, he remains the guardian. Irl he's faced budget cuts, studio bankruptcy, rights transfer to kadokawa, struggle of being seen as more than a cheap Godzilla ripoff for kids, and nowadays apart from kaiju and toku fans, nobody really knows who he is. Yet gamera rebirth brought him back, even if just for 6 episodes. For me his theme in rebirth, 'anger" is what determination sounds sounds like.

    • @Plant-c9p
      @Plant-c9p 24 дня назад +3

      @@tullimonstrum52 honestly 100% agree with that. Anger is literally THE hype song, and I agree is probably what raw tenacity sounds like if it were a song. And I think it also helps especially in Rebirth that he can’t regenerate limbs. He lost his entire arm and literally got impaled by Guiron, and just kinda kept going. He fought and killed two more kaiju and an evil organization on the moon with one arm, which I must say deserves applause. And whenever he lost, he always came back to try again. He always persists, both in-universe, and in real life.

It could go well with Optimus prime's closing line from TF4 "this message is for (viras), leave planet earth alone, cause I'm coming...for YOU!"

  • @jermainewilliams9491
    @jermainewilliams9491 28 дней назад +11

    I partially feel that, thanks to the monsterverse, new fans have come in and have tried to push a false narrative about Godzilla, almost like they where fans from day one. An example of this is, I was always a fan of Bryan Cranston, but it's not until Breaking bad blew up was everyone riding the Bryan Cranston wagon, and when I hear things like this I feel like oh now your a fan of Bryan, not when he was doing power ranger monsters, or when he did Malcolm in the middle, it's when he hit the mainstream. This is what I feel happens with Godzilla and I just want to roll Eyes. Not saying you cannot be a new fan but I believe it's hard for new fans to see all the cgi spectacle and go back to the guy in a rubber suit. Thank you for bringing this forward. ❤👍

    • @MaxisAllosaurus
      @MaxisAllosaurus  28 дней назад +9

      Happy to bring this forward.
      I do agree, to a degree, but I think the false narrative of the Monsterverse is a combination of creators preying on the newer audiences. Because yes, it is a bit hard to go back to the older movies after these newer movies. However, that's why we need the combination of the classically styled Toho ones, things like Shin, and Minus one (thought I do have my issues with Minus one as a film, I also have my issues with the monsterverse films, but that doesn't prevent me from enjoying them)
      That's why I made this channel, to try to bring back that understanding of what Godzilla is, to acknowledge that even back then people knew the suits were a bit goofy, but they didn't care. they enjoyed the movies for what they are. It's also where this idea that the showa era was all silliness comes from, showa era was I'd say the darkest era of kaiju films.

    Godzilla is many things, and we have seen him change, from being a force of nature, a hero, possessed by the souls of WW2 soldiers, ruling the world, and even being a gross mutating thing-like creature. But one thing that has stayed consistent is what the Big G represents: Nature and Nuclear Power. His connection and Nature being in the way he will both punish humanity but also keep things balanced, and Nuclear Power with how he is both a warning, but a resolution at the same time. A warning that Nuclear weapons should never be used, but also a resolution of some of the good Nuclear power can bring.
    I know i'm reaching here, but when i look at the MV Goji or hell even the Showa Goji, i see the good that can be brought with Nuclear Power, not as a weapon, but as something that when heavily controlled and constrained can be used for benefit.

    • @MaxisAllosaurus

    It makes me wonder how in the hell do these guys get any following by saying the bias things which only showcases that they don't pay attention. AND I'm saying this as I have problems with the Monsterverse with it's retcons, inconsistent monster fighting and even more boring characters where as Kong Skull Island & Godzilla King of the Monsters actually tried with a balance. BUT I would never say people who like the new Monsterverse movies that "They're eating radioactive feces" or "They're brain dead morons" because it's stupid!

      Now, there is a legitimate reason they do that, it's because ragebait gets more engagement People comment calling them out, or dislike the video, which drives more people to see it, click, check out the video. Some might agree by preying on little doubts they themselves have to convince them with twisted facts. It's an unfortunate reality of content that rage drives more engagement than positive discourse. Which is a large part of why it's important for all you guys who love and understand these things, to comment and show your support so we can show them why they're wrong. In his conversation with Rodan and mothra he says he only hates humans because they hate him, which makes sense. At the end of godzilla raids again Humans trap him in ice for years, giving him reason to attack/retaliate at us. There's also that moment at the end of godzilla vs hedorah where he stares at the humans as if saying "l came to your aid, worked with you to fix your mistake, and i came away injured. I'm starting to think you don't deserve my help or forgiveness"

    • @MaxisAllosaurus

      I agree, to a point. But I also think over time, Godzilla did realize it was pointless to continue the cycle of aggression.
      After all he did have his own adoptive son later on, I would say part of that understanding is perhaps wanting to have a better world going forward. Not forgiveness, but perhaps a mutual 'you don't come to my home, I don't come to yours'. As well as the humans saving him from the Kilaak's control likely would give him a better impression of the puny humans.

      Thank you.
      that's part of what makes Godzilla a unique character for me, I see him in a lot of ways in a positive light, but I also still acknowledge and understand that there is a great amount of darkness in his origin.
      I think it gives me a somewhat different perspective than most, not everyone, that he's not just a destroyer, but he's a sort of spectrum for what he can be.

      It's also noted within the movie that he and his kind, lived off Odo island, it's how the islanders knew about him, and he was a part of their local folklore. Even making sacrifices to him.
      That's why Odo island was at the start of Minus One, where he largely occupied the same role, just more stripped down.

      "Godzilla didn't have home"
      Literally Odo island
      "Nothing said he had a family"
      Clearly someone's not aware of side material. It wasn't just a movie that was dropped. They made him a victim of nukes bruv, like halo, not all story's in the big release when it first dropped.

    Why do all the MV fans (and by extension Godzilla fans in general) collectively despise criticism against their Golden Calf?

    • @MaxisAllosaurus
      @MaxisAllosaurus  25 дней назад +4

      They aren't, I'm actually very clear about that in this video, and in others on the channel. I've been critical of him myself, namely they make him out to be more hostile than he really is, especially as of late, they have stipped a bit of his personality out since Serizawa's been gone.
      It's often criticisms of the Monsterverse itself gets tacked onto MVGoji as a byproduct. Think of it like peopel bring overly critical of Thor's character from the first two Thor movies, conflating issues of the story, writing and movies themselves with the character. While there are flaws that do exist, it's important to address those flaws specifically so that they can be improved going forward. I've got a whole project dedicated to this in the works.

      @@MaxisAllosaurus That's fair, however as a friend of Rooni who's been along for this insane ride ever since the Dr. Skipper fiasco, you can't blame me for thinking this considering every detractor of Rooni can and has been proven wrong because they keep parroting the same "arguments". Now I wouldn't consider myself a Godzilla "Fan" as I'm more of an appreciator of the original film and Anno's Shin Trilogy. I haven't seen any of the Showa, Heisei or Millennium films and if I have, it was when I was in a single digit age range. But I can assure you. Most of these detractors come from Monsterverse fanboys as Rooni is highly critical of this franchise and all of the hate comments come from people who obviously don't watch his videos because they saw a Reddit/X post saying "This guy is an idiot" and nothing more. I've had my fair share of laughing at these people and I'm very confident in saying that if I made a video on why the Godzilla vs Kong/Godzilla x Kong movies are horribly written/directed, I would be absolutely flooded with comments saying "Oh you're just a Minus One Fanboy tourist" despite me still not seeing Minus One yet. You get my drift?

    • @MaxisAllosaurus
      @MaxisAllosaurus  25 дней назад +5

      I'm actually much more of a classical Godzilla fan, I grew up on the Showa and Millenium films, 2000 as my first, GMK and Hedorah as my earliest. While I am a fan of the Monsterverse, that's simply an extension of I love Godzilla as a whole. But I'm not a blind follower of all Godzilla stuff is perfection, I have my issues with every iteration of Godzilla, because that's the beauty of a series, the imperfections. I'd actually like to have a one on one with him to really pick his brain about some of these things since there is only so much that can be in a video. I do understand your reaction, it was still wrong of you to jump the gun with the hostility since I did say I watched the video. I agree that GxK has a list of issues, but just as much, I have my issues with Minus one.
      The problem with his video is how demonstrably incorrect so much of it is. When the guy says that the Monstereverse hadn't connected back to Godzilla's nuclear origins, something that the movies have time and time again actively shown, there's a point where it comes off less unaware, and more deliberately malicious. Something which, and this is just me speculating here, seems to be bitterness at the monsterverse more than anything else, and isn't happy that it's as successful as it is. As said, the opening of the movie shows Castle Bravo, then the believed Uranium mine, and then the Janjira nuclear plant disaster. All of that in the opening, what 20 minutes? It's also worth mentioning, since Shin, the Godzilla Room was established, I wish I'd touched on this, but Toho themselves sign off on everything in the monsterverse. If they didn't agree with it, it wouldn't happen.
      There's a reason many people call him out, because he seems to either fundamentally misunderstand Godzilla (which i hope is the case), like with his comments about the superheros. Godzilla's not driven by an ideology like they are, because he's a concept, nuclear power incarnate, for better or worse. That's where the 'Bomb and Victim' duality come in. If Godzilla was truly inversatile, we wouldn't have movies like Destoroyah, Final Wars, MG2. He's almost a framework you can graft ideas around. Either he misunderstands Godzilla, or, and I truly hope once again, this isn't the case, it's bitterness at the success of the Monsterverse, what makes me lean towards this is how misinformative parts of the video are, especially in regards to the sympathetic nature of Godzilla in the Heisei era where he is a father protecting an adoptive child.
      Godzilla's Godzilla, he takes different forms, does different things, he's a protector of the world one day, our wrathful destroyer the next. He wouldn't still be an icon 70 years later. That's something that shows his versatility.
