Really loved this discussion (even though I haven't read/watch them 😂) I use these types of videos to discover new books, so I don't really care about spoilers 🤗

9:20 Yes! This is what I had remembered, but it's been a while since I watched the film. When I got to that part in the book, I was expecting it but it just didn't happen. XD
9:59 This is such a great quote!
I totally agree with you on the ending. It reminded me so much of Eugene Onegin, that mix of moral triumph and inner tragedy. I prefer the drama of the movie's ending, but then again, Catherine of the book retains every bit of her goodness.
Great review & comparison! I just finished reading it last night (er, early this morning) and couldn't wait to hear your review that I'd been saving for this moment. ^_^

Thank you so much! I'm so glad you enjoyed it! It was fun seeing the changes the film or rather the play and then the film made. I honestly go back and forth on whether I prefer the book or the film. Its the same with regards to Death in Venice by Thomas Mann. There are elements that I prefer in both mediums.
Since you mentioned it I really need to reread Eugene Onegin too! Its been a while and after seeing a film adaptation of that along with clips of the ballet I'm interested in revisiting the story.

@@marianneguevara8279 can't remember if I mentioned this but I did end up watching the 90s adaptation of WS as well! It was good in different ways. This is definitely one of those stories that is suited to adaptation and interpretation 🙌

@@marianhreads That's good to hear! I should check it out. With how much ambiguity James writes into Washington Square I'm not surprised it makes for good material to adapt.

Fantastic discussion, Marianne! 😃 I didn't even know The Heiress was based on Washington Square. Sounds like my cup of tea, so I'll definitely check it out. I'm glad you enjoyed the novel! Btw, I have another "from the page to the screen" video scheduled for Thursday, of a Criterion movie too. 🙂 Thank you for this brilliant comparison of the two texts. Have a wonderful day, my friend!

Thank you for watching! I also had only recently found out about The Heiress being an adaptation of Washington Square. A friend of mine informed me and I knew that it had to be the next discussion I did for this series.
I'll definitely check out that video!

I'm glad to see you did get to Washington Square and enjoyed it. It's my favorite of the early James novels.
I've never seen the Heiress although I was aware of some of the changes to the story. I'll have to check it out at some point.
