I need to constantly remind myself just how strong wood is. I have an aluminum boat and a fiberglass boat, but both motor mounts are wooden. Wood is amazing... incredibly strong yet flexible. Alternate grain directions and you can make anything.
Those are the coolest gliders I've ever seen. I want one. I love low tech/high effectiveness. Looks sturdy to me. I trust wood more than aluminum. Great video, guys.
As a motorbike driver ... have you ever put your hand out of a car with 100+ kmh? even if its 30°C+ outside, its really cold. and then NEVER GET HIT by even a small insect at that speed. hurts as if someone shoots with a airsoft gun :D
For those with the balls to fly like that; it *does* look like the ultimate freedom. Always always ALWAYS check your cables, and do your entire preflight. Barefoot flying out front, no windscreen...(*sigh*) wow. Just amazing.
The Schulgleiter glider does look steampunk, varnished wood and even instrument column. Very unique, I flew in a modern confined glider and it wasn't comfortable like that model looks.

As a sailplane pilot myself, I have watched many videos of pilots flying $100K gliders and was getting bored with it. This video is a pure delight -- the real joy of flying! And for those of you that think the pilot is crazy: from what I can tell, the aircraft is well designed and constructed, albeit minimalist, and the pilot well trained. I think the biggest risk he faced was walking his glider back to park it (after landing) while barefoot, and getting his foot stung by a bee.
I don't think one of these is going to be cheap either, provided you can even find an owner of one of the handful that are still in existence who is willing to sell it to you.
What a beautiful little aircraft! I love how you're so in the open and can see all around. Flying that must be the closest thing you can get to being a bird. Nice smooth landings too.

With wing suit, we take off like bird of prey, we fly at similar speed to them (not as good, far from it) and the most important is that we use our body for direction. This aircraft look fun but it need a plane to pull him, so no réel freedom.
That is such a lovely looking glider. I have cut power on my ultralight many times and even glided down from 10,000 feet but this glider design looks so cool and must be such a joy to fly 🙂

So how, would your memories transfer to a new body if reincarnation were to be a real thing? W R I’m scared witless of heights but was a glider pilot for years. Rock climber too. Somehow, if I can reconcile that the safety systems are in place then I can convince myself it’s okay. But I still can’t walk to the edge of a sheer drop without my toes curling into the ground. Go figure.

I’m a glider pilot and I got the chance to be P2 on one of these gliders. I sat in front. I can tell you I’ve never been so frightened in my life and that 2 minute flight felt much, much longer!
I’ve got about 750-odd towed glider flights in my logbook, and watching that thing scared the hell out of me. Psychological crutch or not, I want some metal and fiberglass (or even doped fabric around me when I fly. :-O

Remember my late father's stories how he learned in the 1930's to fly in a kind of glider like this .but it had a beam in front of your head . first lessons only sitting in it and holding the wings level. followed by a cable starts and each time some higher. till they were allowed to go high enough and disconnect from the cable

I can say with 100% confidence that I would not have this level of chill if I was thousands of feet high on a piece of wood.

Depends what sort of wood you are talking about, wood varies in strengths and densities.
wood-sticks are used for lifting and moving several tons heavy machinery.

He probably wasn't in Germany. Here, this model was intended for basic training. (According to Wikipedia, it was designed in 1938)

there is no chance in adjusting the seat position, so you cant properly sit with a parachute.

The coolest thing about a glider is how quiet it is. There was no sense of that.
Wind noises are absolutely loud and the gopro sound also is not that good...
@@PilotofAdventures That's a shame. Maybe you could try to muffle the wind on the mic with a foam cover or something. The video was cool af otherwise but like I had said, for me the music ruined it. It's like being totally alone on a boat out in the middle of the ocean with everything turned off, not silence but lack of any people noise.
Just thinking about it makes me want to bug out. I haven't had that kind of quiet since the 1990's

Somebody brought a grasshopper to our club the other day, I dont have a license yet so ofcourse I wasn't alouwed to fly it but wow is that a cool sight to see
I've got some of those thin round wooden containers Camembert cheese comes in, if you need any structural reinforcement for that craft.
