There was a 0.02 150v cap in a brown package next to the one you clipped first that you didn't replace as far as I can see. It's easy to miss as it's the same color and shape as a resistor.
My father and I just watched your video. Great video! If anyone is interested, I have this radio in working condition that my father completely restored to sell.
I can't sort through over 200 comments but the small square black 4-screw terminal on the inside wall of the cabinet was the connection for the tone arm signal. Just un did one yesterday to rebuild the changer. The electronics part is beyond my paygrade but I WILL use the dim bulb method to power the thing up as it's been sitting for years. Thank you for your complete and detailed video on this console. I watched the one on the Grundig table model as well as I have one of those as well. I works for now, but I won't use it much until I get it re capped, etc. Again, thanks.
The Illinois capacitors are absolutely great film caps, as well as their electrolytics. Right up there with Nippon Chemi-Con, Rubycon, nichicon and the like. Good stuff.
Apart from your very amusing take on some of the music, this is interesting troubleshooting that even a complete novice like me can understand and learn from. Cheers.
I replace ERD and dipped Wima caps on sight since they are almost always bad or will fail soon after an old set from this era is put back in use. They were common in old German stuff and have caused some real tragedies over the years, A LOT of output transformers went up in smoke because of them. Always check current draws on the output primary before returning a set to its owner. Most are special designs and replacing them with transformers sold on the replacement market (Thordarson, etc.) requires a redesign of the output amp and they never sound the same again. (Replacement transformers have less iron in their cores.)
Maybe mono but it still sounds superb! Also shango, everyone makes mistakes from time to time.........You are a top genius on this stuff, So never doubt yourself because you are really smart/gifted at a lot of things! Love you always xoxo
Those German radios sound soooooo good! You can even hear the quality through RUclips's compression, and a crummy cell phone speaker. They sound incredible in real life.
Man i love watching what you do, so fun and entertaining , and learn stuff along the way. Would thrill me to no end to work along with you, you get so much cool stuff to work on. Sadly in my area... most people just throw that stuff away which is a real waste...
Yes, it certainly is. The man is desensitized to it, he can take CRT focus voltage through the hand and simply go "well that burned a hole in my finger"...
I think there should be a Shango store with T-shirts that have Shangoisms on them. Who else here would buy a T-shirt that said, "The Watweebulator is Krusty", or a shirt with a T.V. on it that said, "Baked". It would be interesting to see just how far his reach went to see if anybody else in Philly recognized it. :)
Good repair job ! The first thing I do when repairing German radios is to replace ALL paper caps. Most of the time, they are dead and if not it will sure be a source of problems in the next weeks or months.
Schönes Teil ! Vom Klang her sind die Dinger einmalig !. Fieleicht findest du mal einen Grundig Zauberspielgel, das waren Sehr Gute Fernseher, aber ich Bezweifle das es diese in den USA gibt. Very Very great Job! ^^.
I have the newer 7028 Musical Instrument that I bought from the original owner. It has different cosmetics, magic eye tube that still works, and is fully functional, with maybe the exception of the upper part of the FM band being a little wonky. I have not done a thing to the electronics- there is no hum, which is likely agonizing what I call “The Capacitor Crowd”.
A long long long time ago when I was a young child my parents had one of those but it had a B.S.R. changer. As I recall it sounded good. Shango66, the bestus tech in the westus.
Yeah the sound quality is really astonishing, it's well audible even through the mic of the camera + compression + YT chain. But what is even better, is shango's RAP qualities :) He simply ROCKS :D :D
I wonder if the pilots of those planes are thinking 'WHAT?! We gotta fly over Shango066 again?! Do you have ANY idea about what that does to our NAV electronics?!'.
I had a similar capacitor explode like fireworks recently when I plugged in an old Dual CV 20 amplifier. It was used as a line filter. The fuse also exploded. I think you missed a capacitor or two, there was a red 0.02 capacitor in a red plastic case connected to the same point where the first capacitor you clipped was. These also go bad, they are just paper in a fancy case - like a german version of bumblebee caps.
i saw that one, it looks like one of our UK 'horrid Hunts' things, they nearly always give trouble, if it has high voltage across it, it should be replaced, if only decoupling a low value cathode resistor with only a few volts across it, they can be left in..
@@andygozzo72 I concur. Anything with 'Hunts' written on it should be replaced. The German equivalents are just as bad, moulded plastic paper leaky lossy crap.
"Groondeeg" would be the closest to the "right" way to pronounce it. Great video as usual! Thanks for posting. The week doesn't start until I've seen Shango066's video on Monday :-)
I’ve used those Illinois caps and they are quality. Definitely get the job done. I’m surprised you use NTE, I’ve pretty much read nothing but bad things about NTE and my experience with them isn’t great. Many of the electrolytics I’ve bought from them had an insanely high ESR.
Dan Horton - I also use the IC caps (MWR series) along with the Mallory 150’s for all my tube work. Unfortunately I think they’re all Chinesium now but still good quality.
I noticed that there was a Valvo brand tube in that radio, do you know if that would have been an ef86 tube? Really love your videos........with smoke is always fun.
My 1958 Grundig Majestic has a similar problem - low hum all the time. Now the phonograph audio is barely coming through. Wish there was someone in town who knew how to fix these things, because I sure don't.
At 13:28 Shango walks warily down the street With the brim pulled way down low Ain't no sound from his Grundig Majestic stereo Machine guns ready to go Are you ready? Hey, are you ready for this? Out of the doorway the bullets rip To the sound of the beat, yeah Another capacitor the dust Another capacitor the dust And another one gone, and another one gone Another one capacitor bites the dust, yeah Hey, I'm gonna change you too Another capacitor bites the dust
Nice set and outcome. I'd have changed that .2 @ 150v plastic cased cap as well, they do fail. Is the tuning eye an EM34? Have a look at the price of replacing that. It'll make your eyes water!
If it were mine I would just pop a 6e5 with socket in there instead. Or a 6af6 with a HV mosfet driver and voltage divider for dual range sensitivity. Have done this often, works like a treat.
I have a Magnavox Astro stereo console. The model is 1p3661. But the Left Right Ground wires that are connected to the cartridge was cut in half. I guess the previous owners didnt like it but anyway I need to know where to get new ones?
Tell me about it. I live a couple of miles from an airport for weekend fly-fools and para jumpers. Whenever we have nice weather a hundred of those lawn mowers with wings fly over our head, over and over again. I wish I could shoot them down.
Incredible that they are still permitted to fly that primitive, noisy junk over everybody's heads. Well maybe their planes are as vintage as Shango's gear, and it works by the principle of once approved, forever approved.
Well I'm glad I'm not the only with Grundig problems. I have a mid '60s 2520u. The FM has stopped working all but one station and doesn't come in anywhere near where it should on the dial and at a lower than normal volume. The rest of the radio is normal, am, sw etc. ecc85 has been replaced.
Try replacing the ECH 81 mate, often go bad and make fm reception weak cause mixer section is used as IF amp stage on FM. 6aj8 or ECH83 are a drop in and cheaper too :-)
Shango, RUclips showed I wasn't subscribed but I have been for a couple of years. I don't know if they're screwing with me or you or both of us. I just wanted to let you be aware. Anyhow thanks for another informative video!
This receiver was from West Germany. I've heard that in these radios, any components that need to be replaced must be with new ones with *exact* values. This is a *German* receiver, after all.

Agree. Much preferable over those no-name cheap chinese yellow caps. I get my IC caps from Digikey.
