Rainwater gutter fall-1:80. Measure the total length of fascia that needs guttering and divide it by 80. This gives the total fall over that distance. Fix first bracket and run a string line from it but lower at opposite end according to your fall. Fix brackets to fascia at correct spacing so and clip gutter in - simples
Great video. Just did mine today after watching your tutorial, which was really easy to understand and took the worry away from getting it wrong. All in all I'm happy, no leaking gutter and water drains away nicely with no standing or pooling water. I added my brackets every 50cm which I know is a bit of an over kill, but I ordered too many and they'd just be lying around eventually getting binned so just put them to good use. Thank you and keep up the good work.
Forget measuring each bracket minus 1mm all way across. Measure out how many brackets will support the gutter, fix the highest bracket one end, measure the last bracket from top of facia minus the correct mm to how many brackets are you be used. Ie... 9 bracket = minus 9 mm The tie string to both brackets. Then fix each bracket using string to butt up to. Easy fast and happy days
Did you just say forget his way, my way is better? What are you, 12? You forgot to add on time to get string, time to tension and tie off, time to untie and coil away string plus you assume everyone is in a hurry. Put a link to your clear instructional video. Oh no hang on, you don’t have one.
@@adaptivo3692 he's right though. Measuring a 1mm difference on every bracket could result in a few level bits or even back falls depending on how level the fascia was installed and whether it has warped over the years. You have to assume that there will be imperfections and 1mm is nothing. Using a string line will give a better result in most cases.
Is there an optimum place for the guttering to be below the roofing? I thought that the guttering in this video 'looked' as if it was placed too low (below the guttering) which could mean that if there was a heavy downpour, then the volume and flow-speed would mean that the water would fly over the spouting and cause a deluge below. Could this be an issue? How would you address this?
+nick wood - Thanks for your reply. It's helpful. I will check the pitch of the roof and re-consider with information you've provided and what I am finding.
Great video thanks for posting. I've got to do exactly the same job at the weekend. Just one thing, shouldn't there be a downpipe at some point? Is there a part two to this video?
Chalk line a level line then figure your drop needed per your length using the chalk line drop the line down to your desired drop snap and install your supports with the screws on the line at desired distances
Bread n butter in the gutter! Another great video with some nice detail old bean. You get some strange old guttering though. My Mother has this problem where the gutter spills into a downflow pipe (I think it was made of metal or some hard substance that cracked) & this strange pipe goes directly into a seeping conduit under the garden straight to the sewer! What in Gods name! This strange pipe is literally melded into the concrete ground! One would need a navvy to replace something this old!!
Thanks for the comment. It sounds like it might be cast iron? It's not unusual for the rain water to be piped to the sewer in old houses, unlike modern ones which have a separate drain for the rain water.
Thank you for this highly useful video! To my surprise, the FloPlast square guttering I bought has deformed (the wider upper parts have narrowed) while laying on my lawn for a month in readiness for installation. Maybe the hot June sun? Bit of a bummer really!
Have you tried heating them back up with a heat gun etc. ? You might be able to heat it and put one end in a gutter union to get it back into some kind of shape.
Hi Chez; i have watched your guttering video, great video, wanted to know, when installing the 'floplast' downpipes, to join the pipes together, do you use solvent weld,or any sealing compound on the downpipe joints??. Many thanks David.
Hi Dave, No, I never use any sealing compound on the down pipes as they just push into each other. When installing the down pipe clips though I try and drill on a slight angle inwards so that the clips pull inwards and grip the pipe ;-)
A guy who did my roofing completely glued up roofing material on the roof and didnt leave 1/2" space to install the gutter. Now what to do..how can I install gutter? I will appreciate your prompt advise on this one.
It depends, sometimes people overboard the wood, other times they remove the wood and just have the PCV- sometimes they overboard ASBESTOS, so please watch out. Thanks for the comment 👍
Hi this is a great help for when I do my first guttering job, but I'm confused by the way you said that if the guttering edge is short of that internal stop line, it will leak. I can't possibly see how it could leak because that is what the gasket is for and even if you cut bpoth edges square and they are butted up neatly, you'll still have like 1/10mm gap where water could seep into, but again, that's what the gasket is for. Surely, it's the same principal as the ringseals on waste pipes, it's those that provide the watertight seal, not the butting up of the pipe edge to the internal stop. If I'm wrong could you please explain, thanks!
In cold weather the guttering will contract, which means that if the gutter was cut short in the first place it could shrink so that the gasket no longer makes the seal. Thanks for the comment
Hi am planning on building a car port but going to use metal sheeting for the roof but am not sure how much over hang to have so that it correct for the guttering ave never done anything like this before ??

So guttering is installed at a slant for rain water to flow through downwards is that right? I run a business and would like to offer this service to my customers please reply thankyou and thanks for the tutorial!
It depends on the property. Some properties will have a rain water drain, some will have a soak away- but the water needs to go somewhere, where it will not cause a problem 👍
Doing my gutrering today just waiting for paint to dry then I can start. I wanted to ask is it wise having the down pipe going straight into the butt. Or better to use the connector that comes with the water butt.

Hiya, great vid, like the shades! Just got a 9m ladder! Not for guttering install! I have done some pointing and CCTV installs on ladders, all for me!). Have they changed the sizes of downpipes over the years? I have an old 68mm and bought another length of 68mm at B&Q to fit new water butt. It seems that the new one is slightly bigger and hardly a push fit. Is it the same as waste pipes push fit v solvent and shall I get some solvent to stop it moving? :/
Thanks, the shades are safety sunglasses. Downpipes are not like waste pipes which have good seals in them, most downpipes just push into a loose spigot type of arrangement. Solvent weld won't work on downpipe (I don't think) as it needs to be a special plastic for the solvent weld to work. I guess you could use some silicone?
Thanks for the video. I'm trying to install gutters on my house, but the fascia board is not straight vertical. It looks like the builder left the rafter ends square so that the fascia board is sloped inward at the bottom. Do you have any ideas how I can get a straight vertical surface to attach the gutter brackets to?
You might have to space it using some small stainless steel washers to get the brackets plumb. Or you could cut some tapered pieces the same shape as the backplate on the brackets, perhaps make them from external plywood and treat them first.

I had a plummer rip off my grandfather when my grandfather paid him to replace a bit of spouting. so im going to try and fix it myself , i was trying to figure how to change the direction of the flow as the water was running in the wrong direction .

No problem.
If you are using a ladder make sure someone toots it for you. I do know a guy that died when he fell from a ladder!
Unfortunately there are a lot of people out there that rip other people off, which was one of the reasons for me starting my website back in 2005.
Good luck with it ;-)
im going to do it from up on the roof. I think i just need to take out the brackets and rise them so the water flows towards the right drain .

Unless it is a flat roof I really would not attempt it. It's much easier from below with either scaffolding/ scaffold tower or a ladder with someone footing it.
Have you checked the facia for level 😂
Yes, of course 😂
Great vid
Thanks for the comment
no silicone needed where is the silicone.
You don't need silicone sealant, the gaskets seal the joints.

Oh, I see the answer- 750 mm.

Yes, the manufacturers recommend that you space them slightly wider, but it's best to space them a bit closer for when the gutter gets full of snow etc.
Thanks for the comments
Great video as always, hate the hat though ;)
