I started a business like yours 3 years ago. Bought a used Kubota SVL75-2 with 125 hrs on it. Still got the 0% financing. Since then I have purchased several attachments for it. Grapple, Forks, Brush cutter. Start doing your own maintenance on the machines. Will save you a bundle. Use only synthetic fluids and stay with Kubota filters. I buy them online, 5 at a time. Cheaper than Dealer. I also learned to bid jobs, no more working by the hour. Keep machines clean. Hose them down after every job, especially radiator.

@@JamesMoVlogs I don't know if you know it or not but the def quality is supposed to be 32.5% a refractometer will give this reading. Those def 3 sensor units suck. They constantly go back. They are located in the tank and monitor level,temp and quality.

6:11 Think it depends on the area. Out in the country, where people live around farmers and stuff, people usually realize it's not the paint on the machine that's doing the work. Some also realize that it takes a person who is diligent and meticulous to be able to keep old equipment running like that so they are probably going to transfer those values into their work. Suburbs/ city is another story.

I bought a dump trailer and started a junk removal business while I am going to college and I do not regret my decision one bit. It’s been 3 months with trailer and I save half my earnings and I am very close to paying it off! Every piece of equipment pays for itself if you are putting it to work.

@@JamesMoVlogs yeah kubotas has there payments pretty cheap and parts are cheaper and kubota deffently saves alot of money for $600 thats a affordable price on service better then deere and cat wich there overpriced on parts thats why cant beat kubota plus you can beat them orange beast up and nevers bother the kubota with the strong solid beefy steel there made of wich kubotas are like a huge tanks

PERFECT. the track machines end up costing alot about the time you change the first set of tracks. My 259d costed $8,700.00 when i bought the first set of tracks. paid 3,700.00 for tracks, full-complete service, and door repair.

In our line of business (same as you) I find people just want value for money and a quality job, we charge by the hour but from the minute I walk out the door to load for you job until the minute I get home, as I consider this to be their time not mine and we only ever give estimates not quotes.
In Australia we charge $ 120 - 160 hr + GST depending on the attachment ,we kind of look at like how many people or what other machinery would it take to do this job, and try to be very productive.

Great information. Thank you. I'm about to start in the earthworks game, and your video showed me I'm on the right track with the way I'm thinking and need to think some more on other issues. It's a bit daunting to start from scratch.
One of the areas that causes a bit of of mental gymnastics is how to quote on jobs. Everyone seems to have their preferred way of doing it.There's the issue of what is the minimum amount of hours people charge like four or eight hours, or to does a contractor charge by the job? I've read and hear some prefer one over the other method of quoting.
I read through the comments that you charge between $1-2K per acre for clearing with a mulcher. I'm guessing this is based on the density of the vegetation and other factors which causes a machine to cost more to run over the course of the job, likely repairs and maintenance to machine because of rocky areas etc. Also I hadn't thought of it like that before.
I won't have any finance on any of my equipment, because I didn't want to lay awake at night worrying about getting jobs to pay the machine off. I just wanted to enjoy my work, enjoy working for myself and make my customers happy. I'm waiting on my Takeuchi TL8R2 and the latest FAE mulcher, plus additional attachments to give me work options and hopefully have my customers use my services for other assistance. My rivals just do mulching and I wanted to offer more.

We have a 75 and a 95. The 95 is leased. Two year lease and 16 months in the shop. 75 has never been a problem. They still wanted lease payments while they were trying to figure out the DEF. Soon as the lease is up, no more DEF.

I charge 100$ an hr with 4 hr minimum just replaced my bobcat T190 with a svl 95 fully loaded i also grade track homes at 800$ a standard lot and 1200$ a corner lot. I can grade 3 lots a day 2 days a week. Lots of money in the skidsteer business if ur set up to run efficiently. Thanks for the honest video 👍👍💵💵💵

Thanks man for the information I'm actually looking at a SDL 75-2 with the mulcher head on it and I'm not sure that I can afford a brand new one I was leaning towards a used one but we'll see I have a buddy that has a tree trimming business that said he could put me on some jobs that he can't even do that people are asking him if he can do land clearing I have a full-time job as a heavy machinery field mechanic and wanted to get into this on the side if you have any advice for me it would be greatly appreciated thanks buddy
Message me on instagram or Facebook with any questions. Personally if your going to be doing land clearing the 95 will probably better suit you do to the higher hydraulic flow and stern weight. Going new you'll get that warranty and better interest rate. Clearing land takes a toll on the machines so any warranty you get will go along way!
Congratulations on your success with your business. You have a very sensible and well grounded plan.
Maybe we need to explore - under test conditions, using your hooker analogy, a different way to do future business. Since it is all about presentation, try and find a Meagan Fox lookalike to run the equipment and raise your prices. Make sure the work uniform is somewhat skimpy and revealing.
Just a thought.
p.s. Wifey should not know about this, unless you think she would agree with the possible increased income.

Agreed with everything you said until you got to new vs used. If you get a used machine it can be absolute shit. I bought a JD 330 for 65k and I'm still losing money on it but I found a solid ass 953C for 38 and it and the 1986 dump truck is about all that's making any money. The 330 should be coming out of the shop this week though and that'll be great
How much did you have to come out of pocket for the repairs on the 330?

Go buy harbor freight cement mixer $200 I think I spent. 125 a bag well worth it and you will have it for all your little things around the house. Totally worth it no one likes mixing bags by hand!

I see your point about people take you serious when you have nice equipment. But I also know that some people prefer to buy used and work their way up to something nicer. Someone could buy used, charge the equivalent of $75/hr for work and eventually save up enough to buy new equipment outright. When you're just starting out and don't have alot of jobs, sometimes one has to start small and work their way up until they have the capital to buy new with cash or enough job demand to finance. A person starting out wouldn't want to spend $4k/mo on equipment and then only bring in $2,500/mo for the first few months, or they;d go broke and bankrupt in a hurry.
0% financing on all my Equiptment it would be dumb to dump money on buying outright. You keep that money in the bank in case something happens. If you can’t stay busy with the equipment it’s on you they sell them selfs. People who cant stay busy are usually just lazy and don’t want to work.

Nice presentation on cash flow, but nothing really on total cost of operation, which is what I wanted to know. That would include depreciation, all wear items, e.g. tracks, hoses, oil changes, filters, etc. Probably would need to be figured after a lot more hours though to really get a good idea.
No such thing as depreciation since my machine is worth 10k more with 500 hours then what I paid 2 years ago

I think your on the right track. But as a small operator myself you have to factor in all cost. The big one you missed is equipment depreciation, insurance. And maintenance cost like a set o new tracks etc. glad your doing well. But your overhead is way higher then the numbers you mentioned

Here is Messick's talking about that Def sensor that is supposed to be fixed with the new SVL97 tracked skid steer. ruclips.net/video/IPQ6TwISmDA/видео.html At the thirty second mark he starts to talk about the def sensor and at 1:10 he explains that they fixed the faulty senor. It should be implemented in older units like yours in the future. Make sure you catch the update while it is free.

Why buy fuel at the gas station? Get yourself a skid tank and have it delivered as off road use and save the road taxes. Or do you recover that when you do your taxes as one of the write offs? I just pump mine out of the heating oil tank. The driver of the delivery truck told me, "It's the same stuff." He goes to construction sites and fills equipment on site from the same tank he brings us home heating oil. Just add your own treatment in your tank if you need it for cold weather use, etc.

Just doing regular P.M. as prescribed by the owners manual, a Kubota SVL95 costs 2X as much as a Deere in the first 2000 hours, just due to shorter intervals and additional filters needed

@@JamesMoVlogs not if you compare like models... many like to compare against a Deere 333G due to HP, but a 331G will outperform an SVL95 in every way... breakout force, lift & Mobility. When pricing like spec-ed machines, it is usually $500- $2000 difference depending on the market.

By the job is the best way, if hourly I charge 1/2 day minimum and charge travel. As far as kubota I don’t like mine 😂I’ve got a new SSv75 and it sucks compared to my bobcat, I my next machine will probably be a doosan bobcat

You’re not factoring in risk by financing everything. Don’t get me wrong I hope you continue to succeed and grow into a multimillion dollar company and I see the drive to do just that. By risk I mean something unforeseeable like Covid-19 or housing bubble burst in 2008. The ones that keep working are the ones that have a lower overhead. It’s called overhead because the more weight you have above your head bigger the risk of crushing you when it collapses.
Think the most important thing is to be diverse and not just be a operator for hire. I get calls all day long for a million different tasks that I can do. Whenever there is a risk there is a reward at the end. 😎👊👍

He told me he was a developer and grew his company into a multimillion dollar company but 2008 wiped him out completely and so he was driving wreckers for someone else to make a living. He told me he was over leveraged and upside down on everything; equipment, boats, cars and houses he didn’t own anything it was all financed. The banks will call the debt anytime they feel the need and so the wolf came knocking.

I’ve seen guys with new equipment do shit work and I’ve seen guys with beat equipment do great work. The overall look of your business is important, but if you can afford to buy an old piece outright I would advise someone to do that instead of getting buried by payments and having to work for the bank.
I’m assuming you don’t own or run your own business? Why would you take capital out of the bank to pay for a machine when they offer zero % on the machines with a warranty.
@@JamesMoVlogs you know what they say about people who assume, but to answer your question yes I do own a business and I own plenty of machinery. (Backhoe, skip loader, mini ex, dozer, asphalt rollers, asphalt pavers, dump truck, multiple trailers)
To encourage others to go out and finance new equipment instead of buying what you can afford and then upgrading for appearance reasons is negligent. Like stated above the equipment does not make the man the man makes the equipment the equipment is simply a tool.
Everyone is free to run their business the way they choose and I’m not here to shit on you for choosing the path you have chosen. If it works for you great wish you nothing but luck, but my advise to a guy just starting out is work for yourself and not the bank. You can talk about zero % interest all you like at the end of the day you don’t own that machine until you make that last payment but you are responsible for it.
That capital in the bank does you no good when uncle same comes knocking.

So true!! New equipment can break just like the old stuff too. I started out with old equipment and slowly upgraded over time. No debt everything paid off and if I want to take time off I can with no pressure. My old bobcats I would sandblast and repaint them and they would stand out just as well as a new machine on the jobsite
@@taw8350 the guys who go out and finance all this new equipment are the ones who starve in the winter and eventually end up giving the machines back to the bank. There are plenty of guys who have been able to make it work and great for them but they are by far the minority.

I was not made aware of this insurance at point of purchase on my loader.
If I had to rough guess my insurance for equipment with loss payee being 3rd party and not myself ,well pry about $1 per $1k each month. Just curious now about the k tech and how much it would Cost

I narrowed down to only 4 services and small service area. I have had decent success with H.A. but word of mouth and/or Facebook is basically where it's at now
@@alanspurgeon6612 90% of my projects come from FB. The rest are referrals or word of mouth. I’m Working on getting away from residential and stepping mostly into commercial. Commercial work is a little more laid back IMO than residential. But it all comes with its own BS.
