This bike has been through several variations over the years but it's back to originality!
I bought the frame and turned it in to a 700c Hybrid: • 1991 DiamondBack Apex ...
Then I went back to 26", partial Shimano Deore LX, slick tyres and V brakes: • '91 DiamondBack Apex U...
And then I went full Deore LX, back to nobblies and Girvin Flexstem: • MORE Shimano Deore LX ...
Now it's time to get back to originality! All the Shimano Deore DX and the correct stem. All parts I happened to find on eBay through the stores msccyclingtechniques & msccyclingtechniques2 . If you need vintage mountain bike parts - It's a good place to start!

Ready for another 30 years of fun! Thanks!
Brilliantly done!
Thanks.
Those old steel Diamondbacks were great bikes. I still have my 1999 Diamondback Apex with True Temper tt-lite tubing which is an incredibly light supple frame. I also have a Diamondback Vertex WCF which is a steel carbon frame that's very nice but I like the all steel version better
Those late 90's steel apex's are fantastic!
My first proper MTB was a Diamond Back Apex. I still have the frame, albeit stripped of paint and in a box in the attic👍
Nice! Original is best, it looks proper. I'm also appreciating the full original setup on these bikes nowadays. These bikes are cool because it is different from the new stuff. Great job as always✌😄👍
Love the look of the black rims and stainless spokes, great looking tyres. Another fine job! 👍🏼
Nice ride, cool retro MTB the tyres really set it off. All the best stay safe
I've dealt with Marcin, awesome stock. And great reliable bloke! Beautiful bike and super well done for restoring it and bringing it back to her former glory!
Isn't this Deore DX brake lever and shifter is the "facelift" rapidfire+ 1993 version? (ST-M075) The original 1990 DX 2 finger version is the ST-M071 with only rapidfire where you press the levers only from one direction. Nice build btw. Really love the Deore DX and early 90's bikes
Very nice, red bikes are always faster.
Nice you brought it back to original. To tell you the truth, I can't tell much difference between my DX and LX components. Cosmetically there are but performance wise, I can't tell much.
Brilliant, I have seen this in it various incarnations and this definitely the business now, lovely job.
Cheers Simon!
nice bike :-)
I had a Diamond Back "Topanga" back in the 80s / 90s - one of the earliest MTBs I think (after Muddy Fox)
The dx hubs had rubber seals like the xt hubs, the lx hubs had a plastic washer type seal, which was awful as soon as it got wet, especially on the rear hub.
The stem noodle was always an utter arse on those stems ...
Here's another tip for feeding cable through the noodle on a T-Bone: a couple of inches of the inner "sheath" that came in the late-90s Gore Ride-On cable kits is the perfect width to poke through, then you feed the cable through it, then you can pull out the sheath afterwards and discard.
Another option is to make a longitudial cut on a shifting cable sheathing and take the inner sheathing out and use that. Will work as a "glider" in various noodles and such.
Great stuff!....Torvi is such a tart!
Definitely! She's got some sass!
Brilliant 👍
Lovely bike o_o Quality Japanese components ^_^
It is one of my favourites!
I'd love to see you do a kona stinky or a iron horse sunday. Something modern but old enough to be called as vintage.
I just picked one of these up at an auction....$90 Cdn, $15 U.S. haha....Seems to be in good shape, like yours...My plan is to convert it to a road beast on a minimum budget...First thing I have to do is change tires and tubes to get it more roadworthy....Great Vids, thanks !
My original build on this was a 700c hybrid build. It worked great like that.
I saw your Deore DX front shifter video. Did you ever get that shifter sorted? Or is this a full replacement part?
Get restoration job, I also have a 91 Apex same color scheme in amazing condition, the only issue I have is I need to convert old original axle/bottom bracket which is a 73mm x 129mm and I cant find a sealed unit of that size. I can find a 73x 127mm or a 73mm x 131mm, not sure whether better to go shorter or longer in terms of clearance and gear alignment etc. would you be able to tell me what spindle length your bottom bracket is running, if not too much trouble? cheers and great vid!
Looks rad! 😍🔥
Got a dB topanga all original apart from the seat 👍
Is the greaser on BB original?
I have a 1991 Ascent EX Special Edition and it doesn't have it
It is!
Cute kitty! :)
Seems as though *most* 80-90s MTB can clear up to a 2.2 How much clearance do those 2.35 allow? Is it tight>?
They're 2.25". The straddle cable is somewhat close but there is enough room in the frame
I just purchased a Muddy Fox Monarch Team with Tange Ultralight Prestige tubing. Any thoughts on it?
I have that bike too.
I got one, the top tube measures around 59 cm, I guess it's 21 inches (XL) right?
I have no idea. You'd usually measure the seat tube for that.
What happened to the 1987 18 speed Scott?
Great restoration, what site do you get the kool stop pads from?
SJS cycles maybe. It's been a while since I bought them
Very smart original bike with some choice sensible upgrades. Tyres look mint ... but they're a bit pricey yeah!?
You could say that! I think I managed to get them for £30 a tyre...or somewhere in that region
MonkeyShred that not too bad then. They were about 45 quid each
What size of the wheelset I found one of this frame in my parents house and I’m like shocked that it’s a diamondback but full of rust
26"
What is the stem lenght?
Nice work! Is that a 18" frame?
I believe so
Hello could fit 700wheels?
Yes, the first video I mad with this bike had 700c wheels
Hello,
can you give me the name of the company or web site you bought the parts from, you mentioned it in this video but could you write it down for me, thanks.
Also Shimano usually have this plastic sleeve that fits on the derailleur where you mount it to the frame (where the mounting bolt pokes through the derailleur), its on your DX long cage derailleur, I've seen it missing on many derailleurs I've wanted to buy, is it essential to have this washer in place, does it serve a purpose ?
I feel like it's just a cover of sorts to keep the dirt out. Which parts did you need? All old components generally come from eBay
Yes you are right about it being a dust/dirt cover, I had found that out from a bike mechanic since. Is there a particular seller on Ebay who you find good for bicycle parts, I do use that site sometimes ??
I'd top it off with a Flite saddle but nos are quite expensive.
Just a bit!
@@MonkeyShred mind you they last well had mine since the 90s
Very nice! .............. and no powder coating in sight??? ;-)
There's always powder coating in sight :)
:-(
I had this bike. It got stolen in 92.
Damn. That sucks.
