Helicopters can fly IFR just as planes can. That's not to say that the pilot did a good job of it. All the caveats of IFR in a plane apply to a helicopter. Could have been equipment failure as well. Thing is, autorotation in a helicopter is pretty easy to pull off so you can land softly with no engine power. But it might be a tad difficult if you can't see the ground. You've got to yank back on the collective at the right height above ground. I've only done it in desktop flight sims, so real life pilots may have other tricks.
