I remember being in Chicago when Oprah was up for an Oscar. I saw movie posters for "The Color Purple" that said "starring Chicago's own Oprah Winfrey!" Chicago was very proud of you, Oprah!
It’s amazing how well Gail knows her and how well she remembers all of her stuff. It’s like both of the vision it’s beautiful.
The book was so, so good. I remember slowly walking down the street, heading to the park while reading the book when I bumped into a guy on the sidewalk. He asked, “Is it good?” I smiled at the handsome stranger, and said, “Yes! I can’t seem to put it down.” He was interested in reading it too so I shared a bit about it and suggested he pick it up immediately. I can still remember that sweet, bright smile of his. I should have given him my number. 😂
Omg Gayle is the best friend ever!!!! She loves and cheers for Oprah so wholeheartedly!!! You can tell it's genuine. What a wonderful human being.

Love Gayle & Oprah's relationship! I was born in the 90's, so I can't confirm that I only heard of the Color Purple because of Oprah (it always seemed to be present, plus the book was required reading in school). Althouh, can we have a moment of silence for how amazing of a friend Gayle is?! That is what true friendship is . I think we all deserve at least one person in our lives that will love us so much that they will be our cheerleader! Beautiful to see!

No…. Whoopi is the Godmother of the Color Purple. Sorry, but I disagree, Ms. Gayle. But he who yells loudest with the loudest voice, and the richest can claim what you wish. I applaud your commitment to Bestie. You’ll defend her for anything. I loved Sophia’s role and Oprah was awesome in this film. She definitely earned the accolades received. Whoopi’s role really had a lot to do with the me too movement and taking back one’s power when abused.

Not true. Do your research. She has repeatedly been quoted stating, “it was about understanding that ‘Color Purple’ is a sacred text.” And, “I went back to the oracle herself, Alice Walker’s text.” Oprah has given Alice Walker credit for her career. We all know that Alice Walker won a Pulitzer Prize for the ‘Color Purple’. She then sold the rights for Menlo Meyjes do write the 1985 screenplay and Brenda Russell et al the Broadway play and now Marcus Gardley for the 2023 adaptation. Alice Walker was praised at the debut and during the run of the musical and she and her daughter are Executive Producers of the 2023 production. It’s all there in black and white and on film for you to see. Just because YOU didn’t see doesn’t mean the support doesn’t exist.
Oh Oprah! To assume that as role is yours to give away is wild. You don’t own Sophia, it’s not like someone singing your record at all. It’s a character that anyone can play.
Oprah I know we don’t known each other. But I just want to say that God had a big hand in all this because like you I don’t believe in coincidence at all. Everything I feel when it is beautiful like you good and lovely and all God stands for then God has a hand in it and you so deserved that role and all the roles you have had in your life. You are someone I truly look up to and find such joy in just feeling your spirit and your heart which is so precious. So happy they are redoing this movie as it’s a gem and pray that only pure joy can come of it.

Gayle, I love how you love and support your friend, but this is even low for you. But for you to disparage other actors, directors, and everyone who worked on this iconic movie, that's really low. This was the movie that cemented Whoopi Goldberg as a great actress. This was the movie that introduced Steven Spielberg as a great director. I found out who Danny Glover was in The Color Purple. I didn't even know who Oprah was when I watched this movie, and after watching it. This was a group effort and a cinematic masterpiece, which is why this movie still resonates with people.
I believe she refers to her as the Queen of the Color Purple because of how she’s championed the film since it’s release. Although all phenomenal and legendary in their roles, none of the other cast has put it on a pedestal the way she has; through the broadway iteration and now the musical film.
I understand all that, but C'mon, I feel like a part of my childhood has been hijacked by the highest bidder. At this particular moment, this pivotal moment, I wanna see what Margaret Avery, Akosua Busia, Laurence Fishburne, Steven Spielberg and
Rae Dawn Chong, all have to say about the movie shown worldwide in international schools.
Low?? Because she didn’t interview the people you wanted her to interview? Oh my goodness.
Whose channel is this? This is Oprah's story.
There's no reason to dim anyone's light from the original film. Other interviews have spoken extensively about the OG cast & all have passed their blessings forward.
@joope11 WOW!!!! I will respect that you feel that way; however, I want to encourage you to go do a little research. Margaret Avery and a few others had come out to the L.A. premiere, she has pictures with Taraji, and others. For you to feel that your childhood his hijacked, well, I only want to say WAIT TIL YOU SEE THE NEW MOVIE, FIRST and then reassess your thoughts. Dreamgirls didn't get this much fodder for not having all the original Broadway people in the movie and it STILL became a hit.
Give this a chance and see what THEY bring to the set.
Oprah is campaigning this the same way Whoopi campaigned SISTER ACT on Broadway AND Sister Act 3.....

OPRAH! I have to get this off my chest after seeing so many negative postings about you when Taraji's statement of "almost having to walk away from The Color Purple." I remember seeing this beautiful Black woman with her own show and felt very proud. Mostly, all the Black women I knew could not stop raving about your show. After time, that changed, especially after you had those white supremacists from Stone Mountian Georgia on your show. I was so very proud watching you handle those people while they ridicule you and called you names. You were like a queen standing up to mindless and wild baboons.
But after that show everything changed. I could not relate to your shows anymore, so I stopped watching. Then you left The Oprah Winfrey show.
After you left. You grow into who you started out to be. A loving person with a gift to act and write. I loved you in the color purple. Ever since then, I have watched every show, mini series, and movies you produced and directed because I can fully relate to them. I love Queen Sugar, Green Leaf, and the women of Brewster place among many others. Like Dr. Martin Luther King said in one of his speeches call, Keep It Moving.
In conclusion, I went to the Color Purple Christmas Day and loved it.

I lived in the bay area in 1983. At that time and place, you would have been considered a flawed human if you had not read 'The Color purple'.You could not go to any cafe within a radius of 100 miles without seeing several people hunched over with their nose in that book. It was ev-er-y-where! Then you were considered a poser if you didn't go on to read at least some Zora Neale Hurston.
I believe you are the GOD MOTHER of the colour purple and to us all. The colour purple is the colour of God/source. Close your eyes and meditate and you will see the colour purple. I’m going to watch this movie again. Thank you ladies for leading the way. Much love to you all
❤Amazing. Now it makes sense local Baltimore news anchor woman a couple of minutes ago in my life when I first laid eyes on you in Baltimore at a charity walkathon for muscular dystrophy! Lol. That's right. I said a couple of minutes ago just so I...we can feel that youthful time of ours seep into our veins once more and throw our hair back as we gaze into the mirror with an illusion of ourselves...maybe to someone else but they don't get to respond. No opening for a projected thought whatsoever. Really! Lol. They'll be grateful to arrive here if they're truly missing something. And they should. Which is optimism, don't you think? The film broke during my first viewing in a movie theater at the very end when Celie and her sister are reunited and we were told we could come back and finish it another time while my face was drenched in tears AND I til this day couldn't believe it! (my tears however began with your moment of laughter at the dinner table upon your character's return from extraordinary oppression). Arba spelled backwards is? It's not the first time I had to work that out in my head, young lady... You? Love you and have a fabulous and rewarding spiritually holiday!😮😊🎉😢😂❤❤

Listen, Your story can be spent any which way that you want it and there are at least two (2 or more) sides to every story. There is no God Mother for the story except for Alice Walker who is the author ( her words and thoughts). It appears that the New York paper's review discovered the story/book and it was Spielberg who owns the rights to the movie. It was Whoopi who breathed life into Celie and that can not be taken away from her no matter how much money exist. You did not address the conflict between Oprah and Whoopi which has to be resolved. QUOTES TO HELP YOU. "Forgiveness is the final form of love". Reinhold Niebuhr AND "To forgive is to set a prisoner free and to discover that the prisoner is you." Lewis Smedes. There is no shame is admitting how you felt or currently feel but do so honestly. Open the eyes to your hearts and set yourself free. Then forgive yourself. Stop the pain for everyone, especially the public who is living through the pain also. Until the issue is resolved, I will not go to see the movie. For Christmas, please give me the true Spirit of Christmas. A true friend tells you when you are wrong and helps bring about a resolution. Be a true friend.

Saying you would work for nothing on a movie that you loved in book form as a newbie actor is quite different from what you would say after these many years of Oprah's and certainly Taraji's career. I don't think she would work for free with the amount of experience she has at this point. It's absolutely offensive that Oprah would make that comment in the present climate. Add to that the way Winfrey and Perry treated Monique for standing up to them on her decision to go against the practice of not being paid for promotional touring, well we should all be able to see that Oprah is a part of the Hollywood establishment. She is no longer an advocate for actors 'on the rise'. Once again, it doesn't matter the color/race. It is, as always, about the money.

Steven did not say that Oprah was not going to be famous. Based on the conversation between Gayle and Oprah, Steven felt that Oprah did not have the experience to take on the leading role of Celie. Oprah had never acted before.
Whoopi was the experienced actor who breathed life into the character Celie. Give credit where it is due. Just because Oprah professed that she was going to be famous did not make it so. Steven went with his gut and he was right. You know what I don't understand is why Oprah does not want to celebrate Sophia but insist that she is "The Color Purple" and she is Celie - neither is true. Oprah is Sophia. Gayle. A true friend tells or is able to show their friend the truth. Be a true friend even if it means losing the friendship.
