  • Collecting dahlia seeds is super easy if you follow these simple guidelines. I am also collecting Setaria seed for birds and seed from Bells of Ireland.

    FINALLY someone from the UK. Daaaaahlias ... now we know when it isnt baking hot and slightly drenched how to get the seeds. Rough time of year?

      Hi Adam, I collect the dahlia seeds as soon as the flowers start going over. So if the dahlias start flowering in July/August, then just don't deadhead the ones you want to collect and you're good to go.

      @@cottoverdi brilliant thank you. Trust your mother. She said to do that but I'd seen on here to wait till petals drop off. Let it turn into that capsule and then wait till September. Which is fine in certain parts of the states but here ... jeeze ... by September I'll be using a snorkel to find them. OK thank you.

    I have heard that squeezing the water out as they develop can help with the rotting

    I thought Dahlias grew from tubers? I just planted 3 dahlias this summer and here it is late Sept and only one has bloomed just a week ago.. I know I have to dig them up for the winter here in NJ due to the cold winter. I am definitely going to try gathering the seeds!

      Oh wow! I hope you get some fab new varieties from your seeds - it's always such an experiment but also so exciting 😁

    Re. Dahlias, I am curious to know:
    (1) Will all the seeds in one seed pod produce identical flowered plants to each other?
    (2) Will the seeds in one seed pod, from one plant, produce different flowered plants to those from other seed pods on the same plant?

    • @cottoverdi
      @cottoverdi  10 месяцев назад +3

      Hi Mike,
      Every seed will produce a different plant - they 'may' look somewhat similar but seeds from 1 seed head can and will create a variety of plants, each new plant will have different flowers to the other plants. In order to guarantee the same dahlia flowers, we need to propagate from tubers and not seeds.
      so, in summery:
      1. No
      2. Yes.
      Hope this helps.
      Thanks for watching.
      Annette 🌸

    Hi very interesting as all your clips are. Do you have photos/clips of any results from your home saved dahlia seeds. It would be great to see what you got ?

      Hi there, thank you for your kind comments. I will try to remember to specifically make a video about them next year. The ones that grew from these seeds were a bit boring so I didn't keep them or include them in any tours, but, you're right, I should do a follow up. Thanks for the reminder. 😁🌸

    Hi Annette just watched and subscribe ho interesting I’ve just stored my Dahlias. But next time I’m going to take seed. Do the seeds turn to tubers on the first year

    • @cottoverdi
      @cottoverdi  Год назад

      Hi James, yes the seeds will create tubers in the first year. Some will be bigger than others because no seed will come 'true' but you will be able to store the tubers from the flowers that you love. good luck! 💚😁🌸🌱
