  • I ride with some stock CRF's to see how far my mods have taken us.

    Great video shonky. You really tested me. Wish the GoPro would show how steep the terrain really is. As for the big bore kit. The power was just perfect. I really can’t see 90 percent of riders needing more power off road. It’s just perfect. As for spending money to upgrade the bike. $3000 on mods can really get you a awesome bike from stock form. The bike can go anywhere. And is manageable in tough situations. Thanks for your get videos and thanks for taking the time to ride with us.

    Great video mate. As a newer dual sport/off road rider, spending the day with you and the other guys was awesome. Picked up some great tips and increased my confidence, and had a load fun doing it. Cheers.

    Nice ride. Looked like a lot of fun. Just enough challenges to keep it fun and exciting. Nothing too too technical. I hope you continue putting miles on the 301 and keep posting. I might make the upgrades to mine in 6 months or so.

    Great watching newer riders learn with guidance .
    One tip to anyone on a new machine , whether it be a e scooter, e bike , dirt bike , road bike …ride around a car park at night or a flat paddock with no trees …get to know your brakes , your clutch operation , your throttle response , go for it in a relaxed surrounding .
    Know thy bike , all else will follow.

    Great content. Have you ever considered doing a Shonky Adventure adventure school/guided rides? If you were planning on doing future rides like this, how would one find out? I’ve recently purchased a beautiful CRF300L and keen to learn from more experienced riders

      Thanks mate. I actually do some workplace driver training and am teaching my own boys to drive at the moment.
      I have considered providing off-road introduction type training... maybe I should think harder on that.

      It has the Ohlins shock and fork kit but still seems grossly undersprung and valved up front. Probably just going to go back to my KLX full time. @@AntiDEDok

      @@b-radsadventures6846 wow! I've heard that Ohlins in mtb world are doing it in different way. Less air spring is holding Ohlins fork in it's travel, but it's more into dampening. Works great, but it's really different from mainstream Rockshox and Fox, which are all about air sping support. I have never experienced it myself.
      Do you think it may be the case? Or it's unpleasant to ride it anyway with mods?

      It is more than adequate, but the KLX seems to suit me better. I mostly ride on road/track on the other bikes. @@AntiDEDok

    Just got done asking on another video of yours what bike I should get and after watching this one I think the answer is 300 rally

    Honda CRF 450 RL $13500 rideaway in NSW ….sat on one recently ..at 5 ft 8 max was surprised I could tip toe on both feet , and flat foot sliding off one side .
    Would blow the 300 rally out of the mud , but needs more oil changes .
    No suspension mods needed though.

      Yes, definitely more powerful. But will need work for fuel range, comfort and wind protection. And then there's the maintenance schedule on longer rides.

    Great video mate. That was very graceful riding over the jump up. I see you are still trying to scare the troops 😅. Seems a decent enough ride did you pay any attention to the litres per 100k reading? Though mine chews a bit more on this kind of trail.
    As for the other guys question re the crf450 I have ridden one and in this kind of tight terrain it is harder to ride and you get tired quicker. No real benefits if it will be setup as an adv and needs more fuel ⛽️

    nice one, encourage the boys to ride with clutch out and a low gear, especially on slippery or steep / bumpy downhills, let the bike move and allow engine to assist - clutch in is a no no, as is sitting

    How did the performance increase with the big bore kit compare to when you did the CBR cams and intake? Thank you for your videos!

      It was a step up again. With the CBR cams it gave a noticeable increase in power in the mid - top end. I really liked that and got used to riding in that power band, but is was still lacking down low. With the 301cc kit there is noticeable increase of power across the entire rev range. Torque is available much lower and that makes the bike much nicer to ride.
      I am now experimenting with gearing options to fully appreciate the improvements in torque and power. I did a 100km test yesterday with 15/39 gear and was very impressed with how the bike both performed and delivered great fuel economy of 3.3L per 100km. I will continue testing and report back.

    Would the 301 big bore kit be worthwhile on a bike without doing any airbox or exhaust mods? Once I get a chance to get the suspension sorted, I'm interested in eventually getting it for the extra 15cc's and torque, but I don't want to change from the stock exhaust. In my mind, it seems like it should still be good even without additional mods.

      Yes, I believe it would. The problem might be that the 550 Performance Stage 3 tune is designed to work with all the other mods. Maybe email Maverick at 550 Performance and ask his oppinion.

      @@ShonkyProductions I contacted Maverick. Here is his input for anyone who was wondering the same:
      "I suspect there would be a gain of some sort, but it will likely be fairly modest. The stock bike has some pretty harsh airflow restrictions as it sits. The larger concerns from our point of view is a good calibration to support that specific setup as we haven’t built anything like that."

    The mod i want to know about most is your barkbusters😂. I want to go protaper fat bars for my 300l but want to get the right barkbusters kit from the start. Did you ust the universal fat bar kit? Cheers

    Nice one id of still gone for the 450 rallye due to my size ,see i ride a husky 701 LR 734 cc tho ,it has enough power to do anything .

      Which 450 Rally are you referring to? The only ones I know are the KTM450rfr race bike and the Kove450.
      The Husky 701LR is a great bike. It's just a bit too top heavy for me.

      @@cliff1551 the only Honda 450 Rally I know of is the factory Dakar race bike. Honda does have the CRF450L but that doesn't have the fuel capacity or fairing and screen for wind protection and comfort on highways.

      @@ShonkyProductions plus the fairings are interchangable ,I no some body who put the Rallye fairings of a 300 onto a crf 450 L

    With the engine mods, any thoughts on how low an octane can you safely run? Trying to gauge how much (if any) sense there would be in using these mods on a long distance travel bike, where octane/fuel quality isn’t a guarantee.

      It needs 91 (US) or 95RON (Aust). I discovered last year when using the Stage 1.5 tune that it will runoff lower octane fuel, but once you start pushing it, or encounter hills or headwinds at highway speeds that it will start to ping (knock, pre-ignition). A simple solution was to carry a small bottle of octane booster for when the desired fuel was not available.
      The tunes advance ignition timing, which results in more torque and power, but needs better fuel.

      I have the 550 stage 1 with an aftermarket exhaust and am getting about 62 mpg combined using high octane fuel and 72 mpg on stock ecu on regular octane, so there would be about 15 % increased in fuel consumption with stage 1 alone, not sure what it will be with the additional mods, so that will be another thing to consider too

      @@ferkuzuel I just did 100km test of 15/39 gearing with fast off-road, off-road touring and highway use. It returned 3.3L per 100km or 71mpg.

    How does your nav tower hold up in drops? I bent the stock badly in a crash into a bank.

      I've dropped mine recently off a bike stand in the shed and it fell into my workbench, impacting the tower. It was fine when I got it back up.
      I suspect because the tower is multiple pieces of aluminium bolted together, it's stronger (and easier to fix) than the original welded mild steel tower.

      It's not as simple as all that. Emissions control standards especially in the EU would see the bike excluded from some of their biggest markets. There are plenty of video's discussing the reasons why there is not a "bigger" version of the CRF (Rally).

      I dont think emissions is the big problem here. In the EU ther is the A2 license law, wich states that you can only ride a motorcycle up to 48hp AND (this is the most im portant part) only 0,2 kilowatts per kg. All the manufacturers try to stay wihtin those limits to be able to market these cheaper bikes to younger audience. You can later step up to a bigger license when you are over the age of 25 or have been riding with an A2 license for i think 2 years.@@2000jago

      It is possible...if you are willing to pay for it. They could easy make the CRF a CRF500 with the twin cylinder engine or develop a 400-500cc engine brand new , which will meet the emission standards. Emissions are not the problem, noise (intake) is the problem which need further development , bigger money. It seems the Japanese Industry stil don´t see the benefit of this engine / ADV bike and still try to sell to the customer what THEY (the industry) think is an ADV bike. Chinese manufacturers are now the first ones who responds (some more , some less) to what the ADV riders are asking for...but i would like to see some japanese stuff, like a Honda CRF4/500Rally or a Yamaha T4/5 or similar...
      I´m still happy riding a 250 Rally (modified, bought because nothing comparable was on the market) but i´m waiting for a 400-500cc solution which is not present yet (on the european market).
      Would like to see a 400-500cc (single or twin) , 40-48hp (EURO 5), 150kg ADV bike, 15l+ fuel, 250mm+ suspension travel......
      I do like the T7 which was to heavy for me but is an impressive bike (especially for europe)...just one size smaller please ;-)

      Yes, they were novice riders on stock bikes. I would say inexperienced rather than horrible.

      It's not about which one is better, it's about seeing what improvements those modifications have had and helping people decide if they want to do the same.

    You could buy a great 2nd hand EXCF500 for the same or less money now and have a much more powerful bike with traction control and weighing 20kg less. NOte to commentators re "daily" servicing the KTM, you are wrong.

      Yes, IF power and weight were your priorities. BUT if you want a versatile, lightweight adventure bike it will cost you a lot more (than a stock CRF Rally) to set your KTM500 to be a comfortable, long range adventure bike with good fairing/screen wind protection.

      I modified a 300 rally also for long range adv travel like Shonky but kept the engine near standard. A mate modified a brand new 500 and put quite a bit of aftermarket kit to adventurise it. Sadly with the tower and all the bits and pieces it came up much heavier then spec and on a Madigan like crossing the extra fuel needed by him all but cancelled the weight difference. The 500 is a more exciting bike for sure but it is not a better adv then the 300 rally in particular which seems to reliable easier to live with much cheaper and so much easier to turn into an adv bike
