Self Advocacy has been something I’ve been working on... I find difficult expressing myself. Seriously though it’s tough. I’m a senior in high school still working to Self Advocate.
Ok so where is this help at? My daughter needs this training your talking about. She’s in Regional Center but absolutely nothing has helped her!!! Please some direction for my daughter please!!!! Thanks
Just the simple idea that "enable" can be positive is something easily forgotten. I hear it used in a negative context a lot. Also coming from a non-supportive family I grew up not feeling entitled to food and a bed to sleep in let alone other rights. But I also was not told to do it alone. It's sad to think of people with more mental blocks (than mild autism) that go through similar or worse. My mom wanted me to depend on her always in an unhealthy way and to also try to find a way to support her. I'm an adult and parent still trying to advocate for myself and I feel guilty because my kid needs a better example. At least I find it much easier to advocate for my child.
People with IDD have had their right of self determination taken away by the new "CMS settings rules" most all IDD Advocacy organization and IDD academics support these rules!
Part of what you said Karrie is not true. PWDD never had rights to self determination, this was always done for them by parents and the rest of society.

I live independently, have worked in Asia and traveled extensively alone, and visually impaired by the way… Anyway, I’m having to fight with family constantly because they continue to intervene and be intrusive where it’s not welcome… They buy me clothes, and things for a 12-year-old child… My mother, the last time I visited, asked me if I wanted to paint… Like she asks my
jb411000 5 year old niece... they don’t realize how inappropriate this is, and when I pointed out, they say… Oh well it’s caring… Would they do the same thing to a 36-year-old woman who had no disabilities? Of course not… My sister has asked me before if my classmates… Or if the other children do things like get married… I’m at the point in my life where I’m just sick of this…
So I was asked to watch this as part of my training. It is indeed informative but the voice is just annoying. In every end of her word, she makes that kind of a grating sound.
