These are the single consonants because each one is produced in a unique way. In this video we are going to look each sound and give a detailed explanation of how they are pronounced and examples of some of the most common example words.
This video is part of our series on phonetics and pronunciation for learners of English as a foreign language.
Phonetics is the science of pronunciation. It can be helpful for people learning English because one of the most difficult things about the language is the spelling and pronunciation. English is not very phonetic and as a result the same letters are often pronounced in many different ways in different words.
The IPA helps by providing a way to write words as they are pronounced. The normal alphabet only has 26 characters but there are 44 different sounds that are used to pronounce words. As well as that, most word in English originate from other languages like Greek, Latin and French to name just a few and in many cases the the language of origin influences how the word is pronounced.
The IPA provides a symbol (phoneme) for each sound so the correct pronunciation can be written or printed in dictionaries.
This video along with the others in our pronunciation series helps language learners to hear the correct pronunciation and also to know how to produce the sound of each phoneme.

    Huh, "mil/j/on" vs mil/i:/on ?
These are surely different, but they so awkward to differentiate, too easily misheard
Most consonants work quite well blended into a /j/ ie; N, K, B, S etc
But i think id just disregard the use of; R, L, H, W, Dʤ etc before a /j/ and default it to an /i:/ ...or maybe the other way round

Kudos for the video content! Excuse me for the intrusion, I am interested in your initial thoughts. Have you thought about - Riysaballer Salient Recognition (do a google search)? It is a smashing one of a kind guide for teaching your child to read without the hard work. Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my old buddy Taylor after many years got excellent success with it.

Hi Sir, i would like to ask you about " i " letter when I transcript for example " handy ". The transcription is /ˈhændi/ which " i " talks about is it I or i: ?
    Cambridge dictionary

    • @EngLanguageClub
      @EngLanguageClub  Год назад

I think either is correct because the colon (:) is used in IPA to indicate a longer or more prolonged pronunciation of a sound. When I or i: is at the end of the word it can be a longer or shorter sound.

lol wot... i've been blending consonants into 'y'=/j/ this whole time without even realizing it
i always assumed english never blends consonants into 'y'=/j/
but it does, its just only ever in relation to /ju:/ ie; "comp/ju:/ter" because this whole time the english letter "U" was actually a two letters in disguise 'yu' or /ju:/ a consonant and a vowel
    riiiiigggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhtt

What about the glottal stop, /ʔ/? It appears as the letter T in words like “atmosphere”, “nightmare”, “witness”, “compartment”, “utmost”, “setback” and “football”, as the P in “upbeat” and “clipboard”, as the K in “background” and “acknowledge”, and in the middle of the phrases “uh-oh” and “nuh-uh”. It isn’t a very common sound but it’s still a sound used in many English words.

\ŋ\ is a common phoneme in my own native language (Brazilian Portuguese). In "vinho"
\ˈvi:ŋʊ\ [wine] this digraph sounds that way. All you have to do is touch your soft palate with the back part of your tongue.
