Danish Sniper Training [EN SUB]

  • In the Oksbøl Camp, 14 chosen soldiers are training to become "marksmen", like it is called in the Danish Army. Abroad, they say "sniper". A marksman must be able to hit his enemy with surgical precision at unbelieveable distances. Regardless of how much the pulse is pumping and how nervous he is. Their job is to kill - in the service of a higher cause.
Based on experience from the Iraq War and the need for longer range fire without endangering civilians, the first Danish conventional snipers were trained in 2006, and first deployed in Afghanistan. However, the Danish special forces had snipers prior to this.
Danish military terminology distinguishes between friendly and enemy snipers.
Friendly snipers are termed "Finskytte" (fine-shooter), which I have translated as marksman.
Enemy snipers are termed "Snigskytte" (sneak-shooter), which I have translated as sniper. "Snigskytte" has connotations to war criminals and terrorist, who fire upon civilians etc.
I use these different translations, to capture the nuance, even though it is more correct to translate both words into "sniper" in English.
The main sniper rifle in the Danish Army was the SAKO TRG-42 .338 Lapua Magnum, designated as Finskyttegevær M/04. According to the Danish Army, the effective range is 1.300 m.
The SAKO TRG-42 has now been replaced by the Accuracy International AXMC .338 Lapua Magnum. In addition, the HK417S, later replaced by the Colt Canada C20, in 7.62 NATO is used by spotters of sniper pairs and the sharpshooters of the light infantry squads, with an official effective range of 800 m. The Accuracy International AX50 in .50 BMG is used as an anti-materiel rifle, with an effective range of approximately 2.000 m.
Shabas was deployed as leader of a sniper section in 2nd Light Reconnaisance Squadron of the Guard Hussar Regiment, part of ISAF 8 from August 2009 to February 2010.
As of 2022, Lauge is leader of the sniper section in the Schleswig Regiment of Foot.
This documentary has a different flavour compared to most of the other, since it's part of a series where the hosts visits different places in society and tries to understand them.
So it's not really a military documentary first and foremost, and might have a few civilian cliches.
Nevertheless, this is the only documentary specifically about the Danish sniper program.
It was particularly difficult to translate, since the host has a habit of long poetic sentences, that he does not finish. So if anything is unclear, please write it in the comments, and I will try to make a less direct and more understandable translation.
Danish documentary from 2017 made by the Danish Broadcasting Corporation.

The guy voices a very valid concern about danish forces in the Middle east: "What the fuck were we doing there, and what the hell were we trying to achieve?
No politician has properly spelled that out yet. And I seriously doubt anyone will.
Leave failed states to fend for themselves. We have no business there.

Great document. Simo Häyhäs picture was a wrong one though. He never wore a white head mask. Also the rifle in the picture is wrong and no sharp shooter worth his salt would shoot with a bayonet on (if they have a choice). That person was confirmed to be a Swedish volunteer. With regards a Finnish sharpshooter/marksman.

If you are still going to school, you can do something about it. Just think about it carefully: how much more do you need to achieve? What are the critical subjects? Make it your goal to achieve the minimum you need in these subjects. Even if you don't end up fulfilling this dream, you'll have good chances of building up a meaningful life by doing this. You are young, everything is still open to you. You also have a lot more strength than you can appreciate, you only need to direct it. This is a good goal to direct it to. Read The Longest Kill by Craig Harrison to motivate you; if I remember correctly, Harrison didn't do particularly well in school. All the best! Greetings from somebody who also considered an army career once, but ended up doing something else. Btw, I very much appreciate how you Danes are willing to do you share in the fight.

Of course I don't know your situation, but to join the Danish Army as a Private (Konstabel), the only academic requirement is passing 9th grade with the minimum grades of 02 (Equivalent of E in ECTS) in Danish, English, and Math. Your physique, mindset, cooperation skills, and doing well during National Service (Værnepligt) is much more important than how you did in school. I don't mean this in an insulting way, but most soldiers I've met weren't very academical, and are much more similar to craftsmen for example. The same things that might make school difficult for you, could very well make you fit in the army.

As far as I know, “finskytte” has never officially been translated to “sniper”. Initially, “skarpskytte” was “marksman” and “finskytte” was “sharpshooter”. Now “skarpskytte” is “sharpshooter” and “finskytte” is “marksman”. “Specialskytte” was translated to “sniper”, but those were only in the special forces.

I think that they use scopes from storage units when "just" training - That is my guess.
At 41:00 you can see a short clip of someone packing up their rifle and that has a camoed scope and all of the rifle is painted and no shiny metal parts.
I also doubt that any TV documentary is shown the best training moments, the real exam tests or the real equipment in the ready state.
