- April 2013: Utterly devastated to hear that Iain is not going to be with us for much longer...It is wrong and totally unfair. I am angry, upset and very sad. My thoughts are with you. Wish I could press ctrl + z.
The launch of Iain M Banks' new Culture novel The Hydrogen Sonata - a tour de force of storytelling from a true master of his art. Banks' writing shows the imaginative potential and limitless scope of space opera at its very best, while also providing startling insight into the human condition. Don't miss this chance to hear Iain M. Banks talk about the creative process and ideas that underpin the world of the Culture, and to celebrate this latest instalment. One of the most exciting SF events of the year.

Happy Subliming Mr Banks.
Yes. It came as a total shock. At the time of filming, I was struck by his joy, vitality and great sense of humour. Would never ever thought he would become so ill in three months time. Still can't fathom he will be leaving us...
"There's a whole raft of ideas I had to leave out of Hydrogen Sonata... So... for the first time, I've got a whole one ready to go." So sad we'll never get to read it.
I was there, so glad I was, he was a phenomenal guy, darkly comic and completely understanding of his gibbering, nervous fans (AKA myself)
I'm so jealous. It breaks my heart to know I will never meet him.
Thank you for giving the Culture to the world. What an amazing and inspirational Mind.
I was at that book signing, one of his last public appearances. It's been a big privilege to have met him in person twice. His death has really rattled me.
I missed his appearance in Brighton, and then there was not another one. I miss this man, and Terry Pratchett, and Ursula Le Guin.
I really hope we get his unused Culture notes, ideas and doodles published.
Funny I just saw this comment 5 years later, but apparently such a thing is being released shortly.
And… it’s now 2024
@@michaelroseagain Got his doodles.
What a lovely and brilliant man. Sadly missed.
This guy is easily my favourite sci-fi writer and I've been reading s/f for decades. Just started this novel last week. Totally up to standard. Well done M. Banks.
From his greatest fan
thank you, Mr. Banks
Man, I miss waiting for his new books sooo much 😞
Ah he was such a genuinely loveable man - such a shame he's gone. Just about to start The Quarry now. RIP Iain.
And I was waiting for a new novel by him , anyway Hydrogen Sonata was brilliant I guess he sublimed or was forced too anyway . Grats.
I think there's a line of coke in here somewhere
i wish he finished the sequel for dark background...
i wanna see that Book of Culture Facts
Let’s crowd fund it into existence!
RIP Iain M Banks
I only heard of him from a friend a few months back who really loves his work, especially the Culture series. I've just bought the first two books he published in the Culture series and I plan on reading them and the rest of the series once I've finished Ready Player One which I'm about halfway through now. It's sad to hear when anyone passes away, especially someone who has created a legacy you could say. RIP
So nice to see Iain in full stand up comic mode. A great entertainer & a fine mind sadly lost to us in June 2013. Shouldn't the above timeline read April 2013? Iain wasn't diagnosed with terminal cancer until March 2013.
711honved You are absolutely right, thank you for noticing this. I stand corrected.
A thoroughly enjoyable video with Iain in fine form. Such a shame there will be no more book launches with Iain or Iain M.
711honved Yes, indeed. A great loss.
Absolutely!
I know! Should have been there for a whole hour...It was amazing.
The Best.
He's dead now.
