When you want to visit the heart and soul of Italy, you need to look outside of the major cities. The area that has the true sense of old world Italy is a series of hidden gems in my favorite part of the country. Yes, I may be biased as my family is from this area, but once you walk the beautiful streets of Abruzzo, specifically in Citta Sant'Angelo, you will see exactly the lifeline of Bella Italia.
The region of Abruzzo has a small population of only 1.3 million people dispersed amongst 10,700 kilometers. Maybe this adds to its charm, or maybe it is the authenticity of the people within those beautiful mountains and coastlands.
The area that we visited is in the region of Pescara. We stayed ‪@HotelSolePescara‬ in Montesilvano which is a beachfront family hotel that has been around for over 50 years and run by the same family. They built, manage, and run the hotel as a family. They welcomed us in and were so kind to our family. Their family style hotel rooms were a great size and very comfortable for our family of four. The included breakfast was a great touch as well, and we loved the barista.
The reason we visited this area was to meet up with my family who reside in both the city and the outskirts of Citta Sant'Angelo. This by far is the best hidden gem of Abruzzo. This tiny city with a population of just 15,000 people is one of the cleanest, most beautiful, most welcoming areas we visited throughout our stay in Europe. The little pasticerria and the beautiful churches along with the cobblestone roads and mountain views make this a "must see" when visiting Italy.
