@@allspice8769 Shit, yeah, it does give me vibes from the Tenet soundtrack. I wonder if that's just because of what reversing does to instrument sounds.
The vocal production on this song is incredible. He actually wrote the lyrics and then memorized how to sing them backwards. They recorded it with him singing the lyrics backward over I Will and then reversed it back. That is why the lyrics on the verse sound slurred.
it’s because the song was written with the original melody, reversed, then the band learned how to play the music reversed, then reversed again. you are listening to the recorded version of most of the instruments
@odysseysoccerO9 They recorded I Will, and they played it backwards for whatever reason. And then i think it was Johnny that came up with the idea of "Like Spinning Plates", so Thom learned all of the words to where they would sound forward if he reversed it. So they recorded the guitar, and everything else, then played it forwards, which Thom sung to backwards. so when they played it all together they then reversed it so the lyrics sounded forward and everything else sounded forward. Cool huh?
The original I Will sounds like this. The band wasn’t happy about it which is why they created Like Spinning Plates for Amnesiac. They redid I Will for Hail to the Thief.
Thom Yorke is a genius this album with kid A is a total electro experience ...his voice is like music in the wind . Reverse is still fkn good ....amazing
Playing this song either forward or backward gives me a claustrophobic, deep-underwater feeling that I intensely dislike. But I've listened to the song more than once, so it can't be all bad. I find the normal (forward) version even more unsettling for some reason. Either way, it's a bit of a mind screw.
Why does everyone take Amnesiac as the B-sides of Kid A? It's an official album, and it's great. Similar tonKid A since the two albums were both made at the same time. Amnesiac is one of my top favorite albums from Radiohead, featuring songs like Pyramid Song, Knives Out, and Like Spinning Plates. Amnesiac and Kid A both had their own different versions of Morning Bell (Alternate name for version in Amnesiac is, Amnesiac).
To add to your comment, Kid A and Amnesiac were intended to be joined together as a double album, but they couldn't find a way to really compliment each other very well, so they just released them as separate albums

I did the reversion in 2003 when Hail to the Thief was released, and noticed it sounded like "I will"... Indeed Radohead has recorded it in that way --> so Thom Yorke sould have sung normally, then listened to it reversally, then reproduce what he heard to sound as it was reversed, and then reversed the record to produce Like spinning Plates we know ! Am i quite clear in my explanation ?? :p
Mind blown... why did it take me so long to make the connection? It's "I Will" from Radiohead's Hail to the Thief album... dude... Also, is it just me, or would the track like this work perfectly on the original Mass Effect game?
Really, you can't hear it? it's not the exact same version, it's a version they tried recording with synth in 1999/2000 that didn't work. Just try singing I Will along to this and you'll get it
Don't mind the comments. They wouldn't've been hearing anything had Thom not mentioned it. The bits at 0:52 and 1:21 sound like the he's singing "I will..."--and it sounds just like the Hail to the Thief song. Since Thom sang this song backwards for the recording, he would've sang exactly what we're hearing here. He probably just decided that the thing that sounds like "I will" is a nice way to start a song, so he kept that and started writing from there. Since the song I Will only has about three chords, for the most part, I think this is a good explanation for what happened. He was probably inspired only by those reversed vocal snips and not the instruments.
Disregard half of what I said. Turns out the earliest version of I Will was based on Like Spinning Plates played backwards. The version on HttT features an entirely different arrangement. That explains why this video sounds nothing like I Will--besides those vocal bits, I guess. I Will is basically just chords spawned from G sharp major and C minor played throughout. Won't hear that on this video.
+AmarilloStarshine It's the same chord progression if you listen. That's the main similarity I hear. It's similar even to the point where the progression changes at a similar time in this song to the time it should change in I Will for the baby's eyes part.
For those struggling to hear i will in this, listen to i will reversed, imo that sounds much more like like spinning plates than this sounds like i will
Hey I wrote this how do u k ow I made it reverse reverse wanna get involved in a conspiracy that I wrote this whole album and invented EDM music back in 94' cause I did.....magic ticket game
Does anyone know which sound they use to get the spinning plate sound effect that you hear right at the end? (Or right at the start, if you listen to the non-reversed version)
That's cause it's exactly what this is Once I read on the internet that they had recorded a first version of I Will that Thom didn't like and he was willing to redo it, so the where reversing the tape, something like that. But as the song played backwards he thought it sounded better that way. So they just added some effects and the voice and there you have spinning plates. (And they also made the other version that is the I Will we know)
Like Spinning Plates is the demo version of I Will reversed, with Thom singing new lyrics over it but backwards (hence why they sound weird when you listen to it forwards)
I'm at that point where i've listened to every Radiohead song and now listening to everything again backwards.

For those who think it's I Will, it is. Like Spinning plates came from reversing I Will, which was initially recorded in the Kid A/Amnesiac sessions.

honestly its better suited for amnesiac; i know many people see it as the b sides to "kid a" but amnesiac still has its own vibe
