It won 6 Tony Awards including Best Musical in 1997.
It is one of the most popular musicals on Broadway, since it opened on November 13, 1997. This is the second musical produced by Walt Disney Theatrical Productions after Beauty and the Beast. The story is based on the Disney's animation movie with the same title. But unlike Beauty and the Beast, which was produced to create the image similar to the movie. The Broadway version of Lion King took completely different approach. Everything about this show, including direction, music, costumes and scenery are all new except the story. The stage is just like a modern art painting, painted with full of traditional African and Asian artistic style. The dance is elegant, but also dynamic just like modern ballet. And songs, music by Elton John and lyrics by Tim Rice, are unforgettable. This is a great family musical of which entertainment and art form are mixed perfectly.
The success of the Broadway's Lion King is largely contributed by Julie Taymore, who shows great talent by being a director, costume designer, and most of all magnificent mask designer. One foot note, she used to live in Japan and studied Japanese traditional folklore. She also applied this knowledge to the creation of Lion King on Broadway.

How amazing- the original Bway cast of the lion king
This may sound selfish, but Disney should have released this footage in full on VHS before touring so that those who didn’t live in New York at the time could have gotten to watch this!
When I saw this musical, I acted the same way I do with the original film.
-Admire the wildlife
-Bow to Mufasa and Sarabi when they first appear on stage
-Bow to Simba and Nala in the finale
-Look at how cute Simba and Nala are as cubs
-Work on my roar while Young Simba and Young Nala work on their roars
And finally,
- Laugh with the hyenas in my impression of Batman's arch enemy, the Joker.
The lion king is my favorite broadway musical
