You guys fill the perfect niche at least for me as someone who reads and doesn’t have anyone around that reads, just to listen to people talk about books I’ve read is wonderful
We need a Brandon Sanderson of the music world. Record labels take 80% of everything I make and I only get a fraction of the 20% that is left over. It’s actually insane.
I like to think that as soon as Austin turns the camera off, he chains Richard to the chair and leaves him there until it’s time to film the next installment. Gives Richard plenty of time to complete his weekly molting process. Don’t worry, he leaves plenty of rotten fruit and fly traps so Richard can eat while he’s away.
I just did a bit of a search on Jason Kehe, the author of the Wired article. According to his profile on the website, he hasn’t written for the magazine since the Sanderson one. He did six articles in 2022, one article in 2023 (the Sanderson one), and then nothing for what’s about to close in on a year. I’m not going to say that Wired was mad at him, but that’s interesting.
It’s why a writers guild or union should happen . It would affect change on a wide scale and have a stronger impact than Sanderson alone. Strength in numbers
Loving the podcast guys - agree with your points about Sando, he’s the greatest! Would definitely welcome a Monday update! Go for it! - could always make them shorts too?
He is one of the best people.I have ever heard of. As an author he does so much for fans and always has. Some of the other authors who cant finish their series cant even be honest with their fanbase.
I just started reading again recently, and not long after I found y’all channel. Now I’ve watched like 25 videos. Just wanted to say I really enjoy it and I like the weekly update idea.
First book: great magic system, characters are better than Elantris but still not as deep as e.g. Robin Hobb and GRRM. Expect rougher writing that focuses more on action, but offers great world building. It veers more in the direction of YA, but is more mature than Harry Potter.
Hell yeah to the weekly updates! Would love to hear about what you're reading/working on with your writing projects/or whats inspiring you that week. You guys are hilarious and make my little fantasy nerd heart so happy. Buzzing to be getting more content from you. P.S. Would be over the moon to see more author deep dives and to turn it into a series on your channel. Fellow agented writer here and as someone obsessed with craft, these are so interesting to watch/get inspired from. Thanks for making the world a better place guys. 😊
Such a compliment- thank you!! We love the author deep dives, will definitely do more. We like to do them on author’s we’re very familiar with so we can give good info/keep it fun. Just like we did Pierce Brown’s this Monday. Cheers!
I’ve been following his weekly updates for about a year now so when he says he has a new Secret Project, I was flabbergasted and just shocked. Also I would love it if you guys kept us updated on your reading and tbr.
There’s this book podcast I really like called Book Reviews Kill where every Monday they talk about the books they’re reading about and how far they’re in and then they talk about fantasy news, movies they’ve watched, and just what’s going on in their lives. It would be great if y’all did something similar to that
Would love to see a short video with updates from you guys, mainly because i want to know how much longer Austin is going to be reading Wheel of Time :D
30:00 His professionalism and politeness while still engaging in popculture ist amazing. There ist a moment in one of his lectures, where he uses the casino-episode in Star Wars 8 as an example of inconsistent storytelling and why it doesn't really work, which...is fair. But then, instead of shitting in the movie to score browniepoints in the nerdspace, he adds, that its one of the most succesful movies of all time and Rian Johnson is a competent filmmaker and one has to accept that. Love the guy.
I love the skyward series, it’s what got me into Brandon Sanderson in the first place and then I went onto read his other books while waiting for the other skyward books to come out. I feel like it really eased me into his writing style especially as I started it as a teen when I was reading more YA, through Sanderson (and some other books) I was able to then transition into new adult and adult fiction as I myself got older, and I don’t know if I would have gotten into mistborn or the stormlight archive without having read skyward
25:00 As a person who has currently read 4 sanderson books, and one of them was the frugal wizard's handbook for surviving medieval england... I feel the "no one really talks about it" sentiment. I really loved that book, but because it stands alone amongst the secret projects as non cosmere, it gets skipped over a lot. Now I think i'll have to try skyward soon. Space is cool.
I would watch the TBR or "currently reading" update! Great discussion, can't wait for Shadow Rising, or I hope it'll be a good review from Austin. But as many WoT fans have said, if you don't like it, we understand.
I'm excited to see what the new secret project is going to be! And I'm hoping you guys get Sando the Brando on your pod. All the points you made are great reasons why Sanderson is one of my favorite authors. I CANNOT WAIT for Wind and Truth! Please don't die, person I think is going to! Also, completely random, but could you lend me your critical psyche for this story idea? "In a world where technology and magic are at war, three broken wanderers journey across a hazardous wasteland to meet in a deadly confrontation where only one of them will gain their truest desire. Bratham is a Mystic, a warrior mage fighting on the front lines of the Spirit War, but when a warband of Advanced destroy his city and murder his family, he begins a quest for revenge. Nicori is the Guardian protector of an Advanced city, and he has always prided himself on how well he maintains his city's defenses. However, when he makes a critical error and his city pays a terrible price, he knows he must fibd a way to protect his city forever. When Ashiana joined the Advanced assassin's guild, she thought she would have to give up her Mystic abilities, but instead, they were used to make her a better killer. But now, after years of countless murders, Ashiana wishes to retire, but her employers refuse to give up an asset such as her. However, the answer to all of their problems may have made itself known. The catch is, only one of them can receive it. Revenge for the Mystic, protection for the Advanced city, or retirement for the assassin? The answer will be decided in blood...."
A story idea isn't really something that's going to need critiquing homie. If this is something you intend to write, your writing is going to be what makes or breaks it. Not the idea itself. If it inspires you and you think it's cool, that's all you need to start with.
@@rextitan That makes sense. I was just wondering what they thought of it, really. I've done this before with a First Line, so I guess it was just instinct to say something about critiquing. You're definitely right, though.
Its amazing how much better Richard looks now conpsred to the first podcast. Hes lost so much weight and beard looks a lot better shorter. Props to him
I’m in a weird place with Sanderson. While I absolutely recognize that he is in fact the GOAT in fantasy I haven’t personally fallen in love with his writing. I’ve read 5 of his books, the last being The Well of Ascension which I DNF’d. I plan to try The Way of Kings but if I feel the same about it as I have his other writings I’ll probably DNF Sanderson books all together.
That's fair. His works definitely aren't for everyone. At least you can see that he is still good even if he doesn't teeter your totter. The amount of times I see people say he's objectively bad just because they didn't care for him is nuts. I will say though, that Jimmy Nutts from the Fantasy Nuttwork was lukewarm on Mistborn, but he absolutely loved Stormlight.
He's a good author but people way overhype and overrate his stuff, especially Mistborn. Nowhere near the greatest of all time in my book (a term which gets thrown around so often it's basically meaningless)
That Brandon Sanderson is Your God article still kills me. You guys should do an episode on the snobbishly critical response that Tolkien got back in the day when LotR got popular in the US. Special spotlight on the scathing review from Edmund Wilson just for it's amazing title: "Ooo, Those Awful Orcs" 😂
Am I part funding your Sanderson addiction by being a patron? Smh 😂 Please do update videos! I’d love that, I’m always curious with what you both are reading.
What kind of royalty to authors get from their book deals? In India, new authors earn as low as 8%. Single digit. Which means if my book sells for a total million dollars, I only get 80k. What's the standard in America?
I thought it was a bit rank of audible...when you read for example way of kings then look at books in series it comes up with edge dance and dawn shard.. so you spend a credit on each one...later on to spend a credit on secret history and find out those two books are in there...just a bit sneaky/sly of audible I think...
Random question. I need to know why you don't have the rise of endymion in the background. you have the first three but not that one. I'm just super curious since I just finished endymion and about to buy rise of endymion

Really like the weekly update idea
A weekly update would be gas! Wouldn’t even need to be it’s own video, could just be a good opener to a Monday or Friday pod!
I feel the reading progress idea would be great for RUclips shorts. Quick 30 sec. - 1 min videos. Perfect fit

Ask the voice acting community how that work out for them. Or how almost every western comic is dog shit. Real useful.
Sanderson is effecting other authors! Ryan Cahill updates his readers as well! And he writes even faster than sanderson!
Now Cahill is an author whose writing is working for me! I just finished The Ice.
