    A diode is one of the most common electronics components. A diode function is very simple. It acts like a one way valve, allowing electricity to flow in one direction but blocking it from flowing in the other direction.
    Please refer to the article linked above for more details and diagrams to help you better understand how a diode works.
    A diode has a silver bar on its case. This indicates the negative lead on the diode. The other lead then is the positive wire.
    A diode is useful for controlling the flow of electricity in a circuit.
    A bridge rectifier diode is actually a series of four diodes together in one case.
    The bridge rectifier diode is used to filter AC into DC current. The four diodes direct the flow of electricity into their respective positive and negative terminals giving you a sort of pulsed DC output.
    We will cover this in more detail later in a future project.
    A diode schematic diagram looks like a triangle pointing to a bar with two leads coming out. The bar is again the negative lead of the diode.

    Since electrons are negatively charged, negative represents an excess of electrons. Positive represents missing electrons or holes. Therefor since electrons are negatively charged they are attracted to the holes creating a true electron current from negative to positive. All conventional symbolism in electronics is actually backwards concerning true current flow. A good example of this is electroplating where the plating material is negative and the item to be plated is positive. The plating material is carried to the item to be plated by the true current flow.

      Thanks for clearing that up. I get confused because I am reading a lot of old books and manuals from back when they said the opposite.

      Thanks for clearing that up covfefe. So, with diodes/rectifiers, a 3 phase vawt stator can be converted to work with a single phase charge controller without any polarity problems?

      Then why the D allows the current along the postive side and prohabit to flow electron from negative end...

      electrons moves from negative to positive but conventional current is from positive to negative.

    I'm having an issue with a small solar panel used to charge the battery on a security camera. For some issue the battery won't charge beyond %10. The only thing in the panel is an 1n5819 blocking diode. When I test for continuity the diode is blocking return current but when I test in the flow direction I get a single "beep" out of my meter. The diode is still in line with the panel, should I get a continuous tone from the diode or just a beep? Thanks in advance

    Troy. Nice video introduction for beginners. Let me add just a tad for those interested in energy relevance to this. Electron current travels from negative to positive in actual. But for most circuits it matters little for practical purposes which way you think. Blame Ben Franklin for originally giving the terms positive and negative to electric potential during his experiments in static electricity and lightning. He did not know about electrons per SE. He had a 50/50 choice and picked wrongly. There are several ways today, how we know electrons (negative charged for free by Nature) conduct from a region of negative charge to a region of positive (or less negative) charge. One early proof was with the function of a vacuum tube diode. There the filament gets hot and "boils off" electrons into the vacuum inside the tube. When a metal plate was spaced inside the tube at a distance away, it was discovered that a current flowed thru the vacuum space over to the metal plate. Since the metal plate is not hot it does not emit electrons. Only the filament is emitting electrons and they only go to the plate. Reversing the meter connections showed no current flow in the opposite direction. This proved that the electrons ONLY travel from higher density (negative) to a lower density (positive) region at the plate. Also in physics, it is well known that energy always travels from a higher energy level to a lower energy level. This vacuum tube diode current producer is the beginnings of where TH Moray became fascinated with RADIANT energy effects. I have already explained on another occasion that RADIANT to Moray meant emission of particle streams in straight lines. He explored this effect both in vacuum tubes and in home made semiconductors similar to the coherer detectors and crystals that many were using for radio detectors in the early radios and crystal radios. But Moray took it much further than just a signal detector for crystal radios, as he improved the detectors to output high power enough to run appliances, fan, light bulbs using filaments types not puny LEDs.

      Thanks for the detailed explanation. I think though that Moray was responsible for some awesome "radiant energy" devices which could produce some considerable power

      Troy, did you read my whole comment? I already said Moray used RADIANT energy to power appliances in his house. I know you are very busy and missed it with all the new changes coming, so no worries. Moray often used the "help" of his kids in doing radiant energy demos and experiments for people. It would be exciting to see in the future when your daughter later becomes your lab assistant for your experiments and sparks a career as a brilliant scientist someday!

    Hi I have a question I have a power bank module to charge my lethuim ion batteries but I don't want the battery charge to go back to the module so I added a diode how would that affect the charging will the module detect the right voltage or will the diode affect the voltage reading of the module?

    The plus and minus may be differently marked on the diagrams around the world but the current goes from the negatively charged to the positively charged as negatives are the electrons and only those can move around (to the positive to equalize).

      They basically work as a pressure. Too much of negatives pressure and they want to go to positive to equalize (pressure). But positives can not move around.

    Electron flows from negative to positive while the conventional current flow is from the positive to negative.

    Hell0 .thanks for this video.
    At 4:10 describe has an error,in the negotive side of rectifier no flow because diod do not allow, therefore following in to electric device and then negotive side is wright.

    I thought you said current can only go one way and when you did a bridge it was confusing because the diode is like a pipe it won’t go in the opposite direction

    Why you change the direction of rectified current from direction of diode current....
    As the diagram, current goes from positive to negative in diode.....
    Why in rectifier, Current goes from negative to positive side, shouldn't it be from positive to negative too??

    The power flows from positive to minus anywhere"Like a global standard!.What you mention is the electron flow goes from negative to positive(The classic, or even technical, current direction was determined before science knew what really carries charges, or electric current. It established positive charge carriers that flow from the source plus pole through the load and into the source negative pole [1] [2]. It later turned out that there are electrons that are charge carriers by ordinary power line. The electrons are negatively charged and therefore move from the negative pole of the source towards the positive.But in a circuit design etc it is the classic from positive to negative that goes(unless it is spesifick mentioned)Maybe in making some components etc the non classic"way is needed to get optimum understanding and results.

    Plz tell me one thing if we put dc current to plus and minus of a bulb and give current to both side of bulb mean current in negetive and in possitive of a bulb and there is no negetive or ground so does it glow..??

      I dont know what you mean by putting dc current to both sides. If you do not have plus and minus from the power supply connected to the bulb, nothing can flow.

      That depends on who you talk to. I think it was in the past that they had it the opposite. Cant remember the history.

    Im sorry to say but your scematic of a diode is wrong. At 3:07 compare the top 2 rectifiers you draw on on both sheets. Left diode is the correct flow.

      David, so you are saying that my drawing was correct but how I explained the flow of current was wrong? Because I do not see anything wrong with the drawing. Now as to current, there is a confusing subject depending on what manuals you read. I know we now say it flows opposite of what they thought back when the schematics were made up.

      Troy, I think what iljan2 is trying to say, and she can correct me if I'm wrong.... At time stamp 3:07 the schematic on the left has the + and - reversed. But yes, other than that, your drawing appears to be correct. However, I'm also a bit confused because she says the left diagram shows the correct current flow. But the left schematic is wrong. The one on the right is correct. The flow of electrons (current) always goes against the direction of the arrow.

    *In theory:* Electron moves from Cathode (-ve) to Anode (+ve)
    *But practically:* it flows from +ve to -ve, P to N, Phase to Neutral

    While designing the circuit diode place in such a way + to -, if you put diode (arrow direction) from - to + in -ve line, It won't work, practically I tested yesterday.

    this is incorrect... nothing flows to negative in the bridge rectifier... both flow to positive... DC. I just learned it now...here by it being wrong ;-)

      That fully depends on who you are talking to. Through the years some have said it flows one way and some have said another. It also depends on what country you are in. I am now quite confused about which is the current "correct" way we are accepting at this time.
