It's chill of course, but the sheer amount of people asking "wait ding dong is gay" really just drives home the point of how sexuality is just a lowkey thing that society turned into a strangely big deal
Probably due to the fact that lots of people use sexuality as a stand-in for personality nowadays. That's pathetic. You can be teh homosex without being a flamboyant spastic, as Ding Dang keeps demonstrating. Good boi.
@ripples L gay people don't have to be part of a "culture" for merely existing, DingDong and Julian are perfect examples of that. There's a difference between demographic and culture.
ripples L Yeah, but it’s also not a requirement to be a part of the culture. I for one, steer well clear of it. Self expression is cool and all, but I just don’t like things that are over the top in general.
That kinda makes me embarrassed for Arin. I used to take his opinions fairly seriously but like, idk, he seems to not have too many actual convictions.
SirGarforth At the end of the day reviews/reviewers/gameplay footage can only tell you about 80-90% of the way whether you’ll enjoy a game or not. For a super holistic approach, play it yourself, and for ultimate bragging rights and claiming expertise on the subject, play the campaign to 100% lol. It feels nice being able to decide (objectively for yourself) whether a game was worth playing
Funny how he didn’t attack Arin/Suzy or the Grumps at all, and merely spoke about the game itself. Dude even called them “bold” and wished them well for taking that chance on publishing it. If this really did cause them being barred from recording in the Grumps studio, then it’s clear to say that DD hit it on the head and is spitting facts.
It's very vague, but Oneyplays leaving the GG office is unrelated to Dream Daddy. I'm fairly sure (but take it with a grain of salt because this stuff gets far too conspiracy-like in the Game Grumps community sphere), it was purely something between Oney and Arin. The srPelo twitter thing was after and Oney had already cut ties with Arin in his response, saying: "Don't let someone bully you out of your sense of humor just because they lost theirs." Not sure what exactly happened between them, we may never know.
@@noahmay7708 I think the Dream Daddy drama already soured Arin and Chris’ friendship a bit and it continued to sour until the Sr Pelo incident where Chris finally had enough.
@@zanethezaniest274 could be there was more to it than that. Reading about the kirbopher drama, arin and some other animators from newgrounds would fuck around and make fun of him behind his back, so i can see something like that happening between chris and arin.
It's pretty disappointing to see GG attached to something like Dream Daddy. I stopped watching a while ago but they don't realize that by doing what they did, they're making people distrust anything that happens to fall in line with what SJWs want, even if it had nothing to do with them.
But he was completely right. When it was relevant and RUclipsrs were playing it, it was mainly picked up by girls who “ship” gay relationships. No issue with people who like shipping but it’s not cool to overly obsess with certain sex relationships.
Arin: we should work with Wan Wan games, that would be cool Suzie: we should do this game, it would get this demographic, and this one, and they all have money Arin: yeeeeah but I want to make something we can be proud- Suzie: :| Arin: ok sweetykins we will do that one please dont leave me (throws $100 bills)
Wow, so DingDong having an honest and heartfelt opinion about how he thinks this game is manipulating its audience into buying it for "representation" is a bad thing? He couldn't have been more polite and respectful if he tried. He's right. The game has an empty-pandering feel to it.
@DontHaveTo ListenToMe Look at the fucking game. It was lead by straight caucasian dudes and has a cast of varied race, gay dudes. There's nothing wrong with the cast as a concept, but neither of them have the proper viewpoint needed to make it. Also Arin is a posturing asshole. The fanbase, last I checked also loves to ship Dan and Arin, because "uwu gay!"
@@Zcumgod Anybody can make art about anything and anyone else. Just don't sell that superficial, "representation" posturing bs. A straight, white dude wants to write about a gender fluid, quadriplegic raccoon in Zimbabwe? Go for it. Just don't go around pretending you're doing the world a favor or that you're giving anyone a voice.
There's a reddit post about it if you google it - it's not super dramatic - but these comments just created a bit of uncomfortability between these 2 in the GG office towards the end of their lets play stint with Chris.
Chad Ding Dong -respects people for who they are not what they are -hates to see exploitation -just wants good games to be made and played Virgin Vernon Shaw -takes people at face value -exploits gay people -leads a game to be pisspoor
I feel that's a little harsh. the taking people at face value seems unwarranted, and whenever he's on videos or the supermegacast he seems like a really nice guy.
@@noahmay7708 I don’t necessarily think Arin is a bad guy, he definitely tries to be a good person but in recent years he’s been trying to pander a lot to other demographics which kinda gives off the feeling that most of the like big projects like Dream D have kinda been for clout.
Regardless of the critique presented, Ding Dong articulated himself very well. I felt he was kind and considerate in still supporting GG despite his views, but did not undermine his own points against Dream Daddy. While the internet thrives off of sensationalist vitriol, it's nice to someone who's actually composed and honest once in a while. Also, his advice on writing a gay (or any character is golden. Write someone as a character that happens to be ___, not a '___ character'.
Trashy Poss I loved that as well. People have told me the same advice about trying not to marginalize or demean people with social and developmental disorders. Not saying that they are related, but that they suffer the same problem of being used as a primary way to define and judge people instead of thinking of them as just another person and not a deviance.
For the perfect example of writing a good gay character: Shoreleave from Venture Bros. Yes, he's flamboyant, and wears it on his sleeve, but if you take away the gay part, there's still a real character left.
@@yeetthefeet2504 didn't even know there were gay characters in that show. That's what normalization really looks like and how it should behave. Like a "ok cool" and not a "look at this it's so special and needs your attention oooh so brave give me brownie points." That just undermines the whole point of normalization. Anyway Idk why I'm even writing this, everyone here seems reasonable enough to know this. It's hard to believe any drama could have come from this.
TØM FØØLERY interesting, because before Jon left it wasn’t the “business” that GG strives to be today. After that, a ton of shirts, spinoffs, merch, and tours started popping off for GG and Arin started changing
@@blockheadlives Right, it could also be that Jon forsaw the transformation GG was going through. Either way, Arin forgot that friendship is more important
the game grumps did not cut or kick oneyplays out of the office--oney and the boys were already in the process of moving out, or at least talking about it, because they wanted to record around their own schedule and not the game grumps! this just so happened to have occurred during the moving out phase ❤️
@@ohyes1498 that's not entirely true! ding dong says they left the game grumps office for better hours, scheduling, and the convenience using their own equipment to cut down preparation time. www.reddit.com/r/rantgrumps/comments/9xse0h/was_there_beef_with_arin_and_chris/e9ze2c1? there is no hard evidence stating that arin, or anyone else, bumped the rent at the office. i believe this was a rumor that was snowballed from mixing up the information of DD&J talking about their APARTMENT rent hikes and the situation surrounding dream daddy. regardless, it's in the past now, and certainly none of them like beating this dead horse.
"People think it's a joke game when it's meant to be serious" YES! I remember this so well, everybody did expect it to be a joke game and it very much seemed like Grumps themself even thought that. For example, if you listen that one "Harmontown' episode which has Arin and Dan in it, they talk about it like its a joke. Dan describes it as "You are a divorced dad who starts dating other hot dads" and starts laughing about it. They all laugh about it. Makes me wonder if it was pitched that way, but they just switched gears completely?
I don't think Arin was leading the game's production tho, which would probably explain why he was joking about it with Dan, probably the most they did was voice act, and promote if I remember correctly
Its the dad part that was the joke I believe not that it was gay. If it was just gay there would be no gimmick. Theres already gay games like this. The dad thing is the gimmick.
Probably because he moved to California and has been surrounded by that culture and those ideas for a while now. Also his wife has feelings that fall in line with Dream Daddy. He supported it probably because it felt like defending Suzy which is noble. I agree with all of DD’s points but I also think that neither party should be harassed because of their opinions. That said people can disagree
@@ankihansen2489 Arin likes to pretend he's grown as a person by stepping away from edgy and offensive jokes and presenting this fake sense of righteous indignation whenever someone says something that goes against his progressive values. It only takes one rabid asshole fan to doxx someone; I don't think it's fair to group hundreds of thousands of people into that label when you couldn't possibly know how diverse their opinions are on the matter (nevermind the fact that only a minority of people interact in any way with the channels they follow, be it youtube comments, twitter, etc. so you're only ever seeing the people that actually say anything, giving the impression that the group is much larger than it really is). Sorry I made this so long, but I just felt like saying this for whatever reason.
I didn't know DingDong was gay until I heard about this. People in real life don't know I'm gay until it comes up, either. Everyone is always shocked and surprised like it's some big deal. Real emblematic of the emerging issue with "gay pride" right now. Real fucking props to DingDong for speaking out about the fetishization of gay culture. It is fucking exhausting being pushed into a box of what is "expected" for being gay, it's fucking exhausting that people think it's so important, it's fucking exhausting that corporations, games, and people in general use their "acceptance" of us to bolster their social status and virtue signal their own "woke-ness". All of this compounded by the vocal minority of gay people who relish in the attention and are happy to be a living stereotype if it means getting positive attention. Yes, I'm glad we're not being viewed as perverts (mostly) and mistreated by society anymore, but this alternative of making being gay into a trendy "style" is fucked up.
Thank you for wrighting this. I have a friend who fits in this kind of box that the tumblr community likes to package itself in, and we sometimes talk about our views. A lot of the time it doesn't seem like he has his own opinions and that he just spits out whatever that stereotype is "supposed" to say. I'm not a part of any community or anything, but it's wierd to see someone who glorifies their own sexuality like it's a vip club. Like imagine if I started a straight pride club its just weird and wrong because in the end no one should care either way. It's annoying for that crap to come up because in the end it doesn't or shouldn't affect anything.
Yknow, the way I see it, gay pride should be just as celebrated as straight pride. It's good to celebrate you, no matter who you are. But it annoys me endlessly when people flaunt their sexuality, no matter what it is. Straight, gay, bi, pan, anything. That's private stuff, and some people just don't want to hear about sexuality or stuff like that. Just keep some stuff to yourself, yknow?
MasonMPlayz Woah woah let’s not get too crazy there. People shouldn’t make being lgbt their whole personality but straight pride shouldn’t even be a thing considering the fact that straight people never got killed or were never discriminated against simply for being straight.
At first I was thinking "Why is he getting offended at a goofy dating sim parody?" But now that I know it was supposed be serious I'm totally with Ding Dong.
@@crazygamer4260 Considering DD says it wasn't a joke and also personally knew the devs and their intent with the game, I'm inclined to say it was not a joke. Besides, the weird fanfic part falls in line with their hope of attracting the tumblr audience.
Goddamn I feel awful for Ding Dong. The funny man got attacked, for speaking his mind. Then GG fans attacked him. One of the reasons I don’t support GG anymore.
Ding Dong is such a well articulated guy, he expressed his feelings in a respectful but truthful, honest way, how things should be done. I respect him so much, love you Ding Dong.
@ Honestly, I kind of expected it. A lot of people associated with Game Grumps who started at Newgrounds have loads of stories about how Arin was a huge asshole to them, especially Ross. He actually did this on an episode when it was just the two of them and Ross told a story about how Arin treated him like shit and Arin tried to pretend he didn't remember it. Also, it's pretty public that Jon left on his own terms but it's mostly because Erin pushed him away.
I thought the whole idea was ironic, cause, most "dating sims" or visual novels concise of dating women, especially the anime tiddy type. So the idea as a joke game, making it about dads, if taken ironically, would be funny. But the fact that it's meant to be taken seriously is sad, like, pitifully sickening.
I like how people pretend there aren't hundreds of Yaoi dating Sims, which have existed for years by the way, and are then stunned by how "revolutionary and bold" Dream Daddy is.
I agree completely with Dingdong. It's a game made only with the intent of making money. The developers say that it "got heart", but why does it have all the elements of a calculated, corporate cop-out? Was the original intent to make a serious dating sim? That would be the WORST IDEA EVER. All the marketing they got comes from Game Grumps. Game grumps has nothing to do with lgbt. They are known for comedy. To make a dating sim PARODY would fit the narrative of Game Grumps. To make a serious dating sim is off-brand and weird. But to make it about lgbt just makes it so.... calculated and pandering. They know that it will sell, because people see the title and expect a parody (coming from a GG association). But when it's a serious dating sim they don't risk offending the lgbt community. And any criticism is anti-gay propaganda. Win win situation. And they can say that "the game has nothing to do with Game Grumps" all they want. The game wouldn't have an ounce of attention if they didn't market it through the Game Grumps plattform. The game might not be ABOUT the game grumps, but that's where the players comes from and they expect something in a similar fashion. If you want to pander, why not pander to those fans instead? Respect the plattform that gives you free marketing to millions of people. The fans of said plattform should be top priority, not the potential backlash from different communities.
Adult Swim Games has made some serious works after doing a lot of silly games. Shit doesn't have to pandering, it can just be that they wanted to make it. Not everything has to be a conspiracy.
I mean lots of AAA game companies make games to make money just because that’s their job. It’s not good or bad it’s just how it is. Some games are fueled by passion and love and some are fueled by the payday and hell some are driven by both. It’s just the way things are, always have been, and always will be
For those of you new here: Stop bringing it up to DD&J. They are tired of it. They want to move on. They acknowledge that you are going to be there to start shit, but they know you came there for a reason other than them, and they aren't happy with you. They are tired.
Is the game even still relevant nowadays? Appart from the controversy surrounding an artist receiving death threats for drawing a female version of the game's characters, do people even still care about the game itself?
It’s somewhat unsettling that someone like ding dong who is constantly making me laugh talked about a real serious topic like homosexuality, and then people tell his parents about his homosexuality really hurts. I hope he’s doing well, which seems to be the case.
@@joblins3753 You either don't get what he is talking about or are clearly misrepresenting what he is talking about. Like people who criticized films like Fant4stic and Ghostbusters 2016 were shut down by fringe groups as 'racist' or 'sexist' for espousing problems with these movies that had nothing to do with the cast, like story, writing, vfx, etc. As it is easier to be ignorant by shutting others out, citing them as the 'ignorant ones' while claiming that you clearly are on the 'right side of history' for your bravery and 'willingness to defend (insert problem here),' rather than actually gather evidence to support your argument.

25:30 Holy crap I have seen so many gay people who decide to just go ahead and make their sexuality their entire character. It does happen, it's real. It's like that Key and Peele sketch with the gay coworker.
To me, it's more the idea that so many of us in the community had to or still have to suppress who we are for so long and your exposure to gay culture is all stereotypes, so when that small modicum of freedom happens, many have no idea what the actual community is like, so in order to feel more assimilated many will ape these characteristics as depicted in media, at least that's a hypothesis I've arrived at. I'm a big gay dude and I don't come off as so because of my dull baritone voice and how little I react to stuff like male strippers or other displays at gay bars(I'm mostly asexual now too), I can appreciate it, it's fun for many and I enjoy the fact that it is because we all need de-stressers, but the effect is lost on me. Honestly, I think that the whole "being gay being your identity" is wildly overblown, I don't think it occurs as much, and from what I've seen its mostly the ones new to the scene, getting that first taste of freedom and just trying to fit in, kind of like when someone starts at a new church and pretends to have their mind blown by the priest telling a joke mid-sermon that they got from some chain letter.
@@Brodc then what do you mean by not liking what lgbt "stands" for? Because that without context reeks of homophobia. What even is your argument? The word homophobia shouldnt exist because...it divides people? Do you not think any descriptive words involving groups should exist? What are you actually saying? You realize that the topic was how thanks to oppression and being forced to hide who they are many people do go a bit ham on the "gay" personality. I lay that blame squarely at the feet of the religious right. We can stop using the word homophobia in the US once lgbt kids stop getting disowned and the "gay panic defense" isnt a thing. And yeah, the line in your story about your friend "becoming" gay, thats a red flag. If your story is real, your friend didnt become gay, he was gay.
Crazy how much shit this caused behind the scenes, all because of some reasonable criticisms. I hope one day dingdong and julien expose all, with all of the evidence they have. While DD thinks people don't want to hear bad stuff about people they enjoy watching, that's not true for everyone, I'd rather know these things, even if it would taint or ruin my enjoyment for a certain creator. The truth is what matters most.
I can relate a lot, the only reason I don't share my sexuality with my family is because I know they would make it a much bigger deal than it is. Lot's of hugs and mushy speeches I find awkward, which I want to make clear I am thankful for and am by no means taking for granted the love and support I can count on that others were denied when they came out. But still it makes you feel like an alien. I told one member of my family and while their intentions are good and I love them for it, they have a habit of making me feel less like a man and more like a demographic when the subject comes up.
I'm so glad that someone with a voice (especially a fairly insightful dude like Ding Dong) is calling out the Grumps & the people behind this game for the exploitative cash grab that it is. Still sucks that the collective GG/Tumblr hivemind with defend it to the grave tho regardless of it's actual substance, purely because of what it "represents"
I’m not gonna defend the game but I feel that too much blame is put on the grumps. They were most likely naïve about the project and the exploitation of the LGBT community
Hey guys, I know this may be a shock... but being gay, or straight isn't a personality trait. Gays and straights alike drink coffee, read books, watch movies, have all kinds of interests and passions; They only like different people and that's it. it pisses me off seeing a character who's only character trait is "I like dick, look at me." Write. A. Fucking. Story. Don't pander, it's the most cancerous shit ever, and you only divide people into tribes more and more. No normal person responds positively to this. You're never going too get people to empathise by guilt tripping them and shaming them for things that happened years ago that they have no control over, you only create a resentment. You're not helping the gay community, you make them look bad.
An extremely well thought out and articulated criticism, and a fair one about this joke of a game. The fact that Suzy was so irrationally pissed off about him simply speaking about how he feels shows how right he was.
Bless DD and Julian, they did not deserve to have so much trauma and abuse brought into their life's because they spoke up about the fetishisation of their community that Dream Daddy was. It sowballed into something that followed them untill this year, outliving the relevance of dream daddy by so many years its insane to think. As DD says, it's too late for justice, it's too late to lay blame and have it mean anything all anyone can really do is admit thier mistakes and move on, and hopefully now that DD has stepped away so drastically to focus on Bippy and other project, he will finally stop having to hear about any of this. SO Bless Ding Dong and Julian, they deserve nothing but happiness.
This is one of the reasons I love Ding Dong so much, he's really funny, but he's also such a brilliant, smart guy with so many insightful things to say. Never change, homie.
I forgot how good Dingdongs points were, I remembered him just using behind the scenes info to shit on the game before release but this is solid all the way through. Fairly sad it caused a split in the office (even if said officially otherwise I doubt the lead of Dream Daddy appreciated the comments)
This just reminds me of Yoko Taro's comments on Kaine. If I remember correctly, when discussing Kaine's intersexuality he said something along the lines people don't go around knowing what other people are when it comes to terms of sexuality. They are not an obvious thing like the clothes we wear. People aren't defined by these things, they are simply a part of a person's being. This always rung true with me. So much effort is put into Kaine and whether you love the game of Nier or not I find Kaine's characterisation to be very well done. It informs who she is and her decisions but is far beyond what makes her interesting. If she were a character done nowadays it would be so overt that she is intersex she'd become a parody of who she is. The irony is astounding.
Wait... it's NOT MEANT to be a joke game!? In my mind, that took it from "Oh, it's a parody of dating games, even if it's made exclusively for money, as long as it's a parody, it's fine," to "This is fucking insulting." Not to the LGBT community, but to gamers.
I like the stories of ddadds, but I do agree with many of DD's points. This rant just makes me sad though because there was too much friendship going on. Too much friendship in your businesses Arin. :(
I really hope one day Ding Dong and Julian and Game Grumps make up. He wasn’t even that mean, he’s being as truthful and respectful as he can. I dunno. "Fool me once." I'd rather see them collab with JonTron or something. I don't hate Arin, and I still watch some Game Grumps, but I don't expect him to ever be anything else but Arin.
@@poopnach I honestly think it'd be easier (and more beneficial) for Arin to dissolve GG completely because Arin isn't really one to admit he's wrong. At least when it comes to anything he's done in recent years. Suzy isn't much different.
SirGarforth he can’t admit his wrong is the problem though. I think he thinks that the Internet still really loves Game Grumps, even though a lot of people have changed their opinions on them. He can’t admit to himself that GG is at its end.
I appreciate that he doesn't like hollow representation where the main focus of a person's character is their gender, sexuality, or color. Just focus on creating good characters. A good character can come in infinitely different forms.
I didn't exactly understand the controversy at first but that's because I literally DID think it was a joke game because the way they presented it made it seem like it would be a light-hearted comedic type of dating simulator, the last thing I thought it would turn out to be is an attempt to actually support the LGBT community And what I especially do not understand is how this honest criticism and honest expression of beliefs is what led to any drama in the first place Frankly this is all pathetic and childish of the Grumps though I'd never expect an apology from the likes of them at this point Especially since Oney and co. have basically given up on making amends with these evidently insensitive people This is just ironic considering the recent drama involving Sr Pelo and Arin over the whole story time animators discussion, because even when they try to make an actual effort at doing something right in the interests of other people, it really only turns out to be in their OWN interests Arin literally just made it about himself and used that as a basis for the drama, not even considering any of the legitimacy of the opinions expressed in Pelo's video nor the obviously satirical aspects shown throughout -- not even acknowledging the fact that several of those animators helped in making that same video in the first place I don't hate the Grumps but I fail to respect them after the shit they've done thus far
Wow. He didn't even say anything negative about Arin or Dan. Yes Arin sent his "lovelies" after him on Twitter. Yeah, Arin definitely deserves to live. /s
I agree with ding dong tbh. The game seemed cute lighthearted and fun at first so i got it despite not being attracted to men but i never got that far cuz it felt so boring and empty i guess? it does certainly feel like pandering for lgbt people because it doesnt seem genuine somehow. i havent played since but iirc the characters were bland and nothing was too interesting.

I’m gonna be completely honest I really thought Dream Daddy was a joke game and I played the game all the way through and still thought it was a fun joke game that was parodying all “graphic novel” (sorry I can’t think of anything else to call it) games such as Hunnypop, Sakura Spirit (which the Grumps played, and all the other Japanese Games of the same nature. Every character is supposed to be a Hyperbole of a stereotype Robert is the tough guy, Damian is the Vampire, and Craig was the Workout Junkee. Each character did have this moment where somthing differed from the norm Damian worked at an Adoption Center, The Teacher whose name I cant remember was a wrestler, and Robert was a Romantic. I mean for Pete sake there is a seen where you pull out a book and it’s a Naruto Fanfiction. I don’t see how this game could be taken as anything, but a long joke. I even found myself chuckling at some of the mini games and how you Built Your Dad. Sure there are serious moments in the game that were heartwarming, but it didn’t warrant the game to be taken 100% seriously. I’m kind of shocked and a little disappointed to hear that the folks that made the game (whether it was the development staff or if the Game Grumps crew themselves had a part to play in this) thought that this game would be taken as a 100% seriously title. Also I don’t think this was the reason that Ding Dong and Jullian left LA you can tell through OneyPlays that they just hated California in general this is just a coincidence and that’s about it.
I played it not knowing any of this and looking back Ding Dong is 100% right. Like it's just exploitative of the LGBTQ+ community. And yeah their marketing had me thinking it was a dating Sim but it totally isn't like what so ever. Idk just thinking about it I feel bad for buying it.
Learning what happened with ding dong and julian from game grumps makes me lose alot of respect for game grumps in general. I hate that oneyplays is how I met ding dong and julian and I can clearly see they want to be remembered for their games and not oneyplays. I hope they get to that success and that people like arin fume and regret what he did to them. Ding dong and julian have kept me through sleepless nights, stressful work days and depressive episodes. I love how their senses of humor make me laugh and their talk about game design make me want to listen and learn. I'm also really happy that julian and ding dong are an item, but I understand that they weren't ready to tell their family yet; it's not easy.
I feel really bad for the grumps, because they’re falling apart so bad. If all the rumors are true, Arin kicked out dd and Julian because of this and this is why they left OP and that’s why supermega and oney fell out sucks.
Okay but can we just talk about how fucking bullshit it is how bomberman hero doesn't have consistent checkpoints and it'll just boot you right back to the beginning with zero fucking points if you die. that's my biggest gripe with bomberman hero.
I always come back to this stream clip in particular because it really helps to illustrate why diversity for the pure sake of inclusion doesn’t actually help the people it sets out to and ultimately is an indication that the creator just wants to pander to a specific group. Edit: well, now that it’s out that dingdong was basically used by his “friends” before being abandoned when he caught shit, i gotta say that all of the good points here weren’t worth what dingdong had to endure. Wherever you end up, Dingdong, I hope it’s better than the fucking rats’ nest that is online discourse. Fly high, funnyman.
Ding Dong: Essentially points out this is just more “White Allies” nonsense. Suzy and others: Acts exactly like the white ally stereotype. Still waiting for the apology for the rude comments about black people and for using the n-word, Suzy and Arin.
That probably won’t happen at all and won’t mention it but if you look back at egoraptor’s old cartoon videos where he says the n word, he removed them and silenced it without mentioning it
hey we got it. it was just a half assed apology though it wasn’t even really an apology it was “all of us game grumps really want to say that we stand with the black lives matter movement and we’re going to remove all those old videos we said the N-word because we feel like that might hurt people” or something like that. they removed an entire play through they decided that oh it’s problematic let’s get rid of it it wasn’t even really an apology I mean what more do you expect out of arin though
Every year this video is more and more right regarding the 'fight extremism with extremism' thing and turning any issue you have into a political matter.
Kung Jin was gay in MKX and its extremely hard to notice. It was subtly hinted at and thats it. DingDongs right your sexuality should define you as a person.
it doesn't even have to be hidden, it's fine if you show some gay cuddling and stuff, just let the character be something outside of "the gay friend", or "try hard unfunny hipster girl"
i actually thought the way they handled it was extremely well done, he was afraid that he wouldn't be allowed to join the shaolin because of his sexuality, and fear of not being accepted by a group is a very real issue with us LGBT crowd the fact that it's only brought up when a pre-fight intro involves flirting or a single time in the story makes it seem like he's real, it's not something that's meant to be "hey everybody i'm gay" wanting them to know it every six seconds. which i kinda actually enjoy people like sonicfox doing because it's so obvious he's only doing it to make homophobes angry lol
i'm gonna preface this saying this is more relevant to the comment section rather than the video: Drama with something as non-serious as lets-play channels just makes me sad. Everyone within this sphere seems like such nice people. Arin, Oney and the rest all seem like great folks. But the whole internet thing with taking sides and "One says other did bad thing and therefore they bad persons!!" just blows it out of proportion. Good people have arguments sometimes, and it's sad that the internet has to pick it apart for all it's worth.
@@seaneIder supermega worked as editors for gg at the time, and even used their studio to record. so they had to part ways with Oney and the gang, to not be out of jobs. I think their still friends tho. or at least not enemies.
Ding Dong: "Guess what, sexuality is not a visible characteristic, you can know someone who's gay and probably not know they're gay for years and years becuse guess what, it's sexuality, it doesn't come up all the time, it's not something transparent that get's waved around 24/7, and if it is, that means that you probably don't have much going on for you as an actual person to begin with." I just want to emphasize the poetry of how DD says this in a time where people come to his stream just realizing "Wait, you're gay?" after watching his stuff for a long time, he's the best proof of what he's talking about at that moment, it's sad to see what happened after all he was guilty of was telling the truth.
You get to have your own opinions like anyone else. Don't feel bad if you like it. You can like it on your terms as someone else dislikes it on their terms.
i agree with the vast majority of what he said, except for the part where he said that if you have really made a good gay character you won't even know they were gay, it really depends on the type of story that is made, just like how you have straight characters who will develop crushes or have girlfriends, boyfriends, or spouses, you'll have the same thing happen with gay characters sometimes too, but yeah it definently depends on the type of story and characters being told
Shits hard. In my writing i try to pick at random and then play out the consequences and reaction based on their character. idk if thats the right thing to do or not though
I like how Mr. PhD and the Goose understood everything the wrong way on purpose. Literally a carbon copy reply of "How dare u, the dev team worked real hard! >:U". Well duh, the cash-grab intention usually doesn't lie within the goddamn visual artists or programmers tryna earn their money but from the higher-ups. You'd think that's a fucking no-brainer. I'm used to that from Suzy but Brian? Come on.
I think Brian's an asshole. His humor seems abusive. I remember seeing some video of Chris hanging out with the Grumps crew, and Brian basically bullied him into trying to bite some apple with his hands behind his back, even though Chris was dragging his heels and didn't really want to. Not the worst thing in the world, but I can't stand people like that.
I’m not one to hate on being “woke” or whatever, but the Grumps can sometimes get very annoyingly woke. Sometimes it feels like it’s just a bunch of straight people trying to pander towards a non-straight audience.
As a fellow mo, getting pandered to by straight people who want to be an ally is almost a worse feeling than being discriminated against for being gay in the first place. Last thing I want to be known for is by which reproductive organ I put in my mouth, and if that's all you can use to quantify a relationship with me as a person then you are deeply flawed.
As a gay dude, I seriously can’t stand when people consolidate my sexuality into a fucking marketing tactic. That love simon movie that came out earlier this year came off as nothing but that to me. It’s the same thing that ghosybusters movie did to women. I absolutely hate how dream daddy presents itself as some amazing progressive movement when it’s a completely exploitative experience. I also have had to experience this both with people percieving me as straight and as gay (I came out this year), and it is so insulting that people can’t understand this shit.
I'm not gay or LGBT but "gay pride inclusion" movements from businesses always bugged the fuck out of me because not only is it exploitative (they don't give a fuck about gay people) it only further isolates people based on their humanity by putting them into a box. They are actual people with their own interests, hobbies, and personalities, why does their sexuality matter? "It's because it stands up against homophobia" why can't instances of homophobia be sought out and eradicated when they occur, and previous injustices in the past be recognised?
i had a good time w dream daddy when I was a little gay highschooler, but I think mr ding dong is 100000% right. it’s just more exploitation of the community. I mean, that’s all pride is anymore these days too - just a chance for people to market to us :/ My biggest issue w dream daddy back in 2017 and now is that it’s a game with OBVIOUSLY sexual tones/content, but bc game grumps knew their audience was mostly teens, they shyed away from any actual sex or compelling storylines, and that to me is the most disappointing :/ it ends up being a weirdly sanitized version of a dating sim, and when you play through it it comes off as being uh... not that full of content 😬. I think there was a point where they needed to decide if this was a gimmick game for teens or an adult dating sim, and because that choice wasn’t made the end result severely suffered. Maybe if they weren’t so focused on pandering it could have been a good game :(
It seems like Ding Dong has an issue mostly with how Vernon has handled the entire project. I am under the impression Vernon is also gay? Which if that's the case, then thats even worse if someone part of the lgbt community is actively just trying to cash in on something they are a part of. There's so much exploitation of gay/lesbian/etc. stuff in media and that really bothers me if he's just doing exactly that. This is amusing in hindsight considering the game got delayed, because that made it obvious there was more than one thing wrong with how this game was handled.
I wonder how the commenter must feel that brought up dream daddy in the first place. If that were me, I would be feeling the worst case of survivor’s guilt right now.
I played through about 2 hours of Dream Daddy... it was OK. Some of the VA and writing was subpar. One of the VA sounded like he recorded his lines in an echoey bathroom.
What upsets me the most is the hate DD got for this. It just shows you can't freely speak your mind anywhere on the internet without being attacked by overzealous users who REALLY need to take a minute or two to consider both sides of the story.

It's very vague, but Oneyplays leaving the GG office is unrelated to Dream Daddy. I'm fairly sure (but take it with a grain of salt because this stuff gets far too conspiracy-like in the Game Grumps community sphere), it was purely something between Oney and Arin.

You're gay.

Im here after the video of DD&J talking about this. It's crazy looking back at this because it puts everything into a different light.
Wait what video?
Is the game even still relevant nowadays? Appart from the controversy surrounding an artist receiving death threats for drawing a female version of the game's characters, do people even still care about the game itself?
Dadko it was just a MUST PLAY game in the let's play scene for a month, and then it died. F a s t.
Doki doki literature club had more staying power than that game
Well it sure fucking sounds like it if the artist is getting death threats for doing something so minor that has nothing to do with the game itself
ImmaLittlePip it was also a decent story
I hear people still talking about Doki Doki
It’s somewhat unsettling that someone like ding dong who is constantly making me laugh talked about a real serious topic like homosexuality, and then people tell his parents about his homosexuality really hurts. I hope he’s doing well, which seems to be the case.
If a game is associated with the LGBT, there’s literally no way to criticize it without being called a homophobic person.
Asaptaco you can criticize it, as long as you’re not homophobic about it
@@joblins3753 You either don't get what he is talking about or are clearly misrepresenting what he is talking about. This was therapeutic to listen to. Both DingDong's sobering take on the topics, and the Bomberman music. This is my ASMR right there
25:30 Holy crap I have seen so many gay people who decide to just go ahead and make their sexuality their entire character. It does happen, it's real. It's like that Key and Peele sketch with the gay coworker.
BioYuGi Jesus I don’t have any friends that are like that, but they do like to constantly extremes that they are gay.
@@Brodc sounds like a fake story
@@Brodc if that story isnt fake then yeah...depending on what you mean by not liking what LGBT "stands" for, thats homophobic lol
They hated him because he spoke the truth
Thanks for this.
Ugh that’s exactly what happened to when my mom found out. Never gonna mention my sexuality ever again.
I’d way rather be in your family than my homophobic one lol
"makes you feel like an alien" hmmm, potentially Ding Dong used his avatar as a means of expressing himself? Just a theory. A game theory.

You're not helping the gay community, you make them look bad.
An extremely well thought out and articulated criticism, and a fair one about this joke of a game. The fact that Suzy was so irrationally pissed off about him simply speaking about how he feels shows how right he was.

He's a very thoughtful and well spoken guy
This is one of the reasons I love Ding Dong so much, he's really funny, but he's also such a brilliant, smart guy with so many insightful things to say. Never change, homie.
Then Game Grumps fans doxed him because he didn’t like their dating sim
*visual novel
There is definitely not enough in that cashgrab of a “game” to call it a dating sim
I forgot how good Dingdongs points were, I remembered him just using behind the scenes info to shit on the game before release but this is solid all the way through. Fairly sad it caused a split in the office (even if said officially otherwise I doubt the lead of Dream Daddy appreciated the comments)
Funny thing is... I'm not even here for drama, I actually really wanted to see DD play Bomberman Hero
"I dont fault the grumps" is the main thing alot of you are missing I think

I like the stories of ddadds, but I do agree with many of DD's points. This rant just makes me sad though because there was too much friendship going on.
Too much friendship in your businesses Arin. :(

Ding dong got doxxed over this
I wished I had found this before I bought the game...but me small brain and dont think deeper into stuff and Ding Dong big brain
I appreciate that he doesn't like hollow representation where the main focus of a person's character is their gender, sexuality, or color. Just focus on creating good characters. A good character can come in infinitely different forms.
I didn't exactly understand the controversy at first but that's because I literally DID think it was a joke game because the way they presented it made it seem like it would be a light-hearted comedic type of dating simulator, the last thing I thought it would turn out to be is an attempt to actually support the LGBT community
And what I especially do not understand is how this honest criticism and honest expression of beliefs is what led to any drama in the first place
Frankly this is all pathetic and childish of the Grumps though I'd never expect an apology from the likes of them at this point
Especially since Oney and co. have basically given up on making amends with these evidently insensitive people
This is just ironic considering the recent drama involving Sr Pelo and Arin over the whole story time animators discussion, because even when they try to make an actual effort at doing something right in the interests of other people, it really only turns out to be in their OWN interests
Arin literally just made it about himself and used that as a basis for the drama, not even considering any of the legitimacy of the opinions expressed in Pelo's video nor the obviously satirical aspects shown throughout -- not even acknowledging the fact that several of those animators helped in making that same video in the first place
I don't hate the Grumps but I fail to respect them after the shit they've done thus far
Wow. He didn't even say anything negative about Arin or Dan. Yes Arin sent his "lovelies" after him on Twitter.
Yeah, Arin definitely deserves to live. /s

I felt ripped off when i realized how much of a not-dating sim it was and I didn't even buy it lmao
Learning what happened with ding dong and julian from game grumps makes me lose alot of respect for game grumps in general.

Every year this video is more and more right regarding the 'fight extremism with extremism' thing and turning any issue you have into a political matter.
Kung Jin was gay in MKX and its extremely hard to notice. It was subtly hinted at and thats it. DingDongs right your sexuality should define you as a person.

it doesn't even have to be hidden, it's fine if you show some gay cuddling and stuff, just let the character be something outside of "the gay friend", or "try hard unfunny hipster girl"
i actually thought the way they handled it was extremely well done, he was afraid that he wouldn't be allowed to join the shaolin because of his sexuality, and fear of not being accepted by a group is a very real issue with us LGBT crowd
the fact that it's only brought up when a pre-fight intro involves flirting or a single time in the story makes it seem like he's real, it's not something that's meant to be "hey everybody i'm gay" wanting them to know it every six seconds. which i kinda actually enjoy people like sonicfox doing because it's so obvious he's only doing it to make homophobes angry lol
i'm gonna preface this saying this is more relevant to the comment section rather than the video:
Drama with something as non-serious as lets-play channels just makes me sad.
Ding Dong is 1000% correct. im kinda happy they parted ways with the GG.
its sad that they also had to part way with supermega though
@@seaneIder supermega worked as editors for gg at the time, and even used their studio to record. so they had to part ways with Oney and the gang, to not be out of jobs.

Ding Dong: "Guess what, sexuality is not a visible characteristic, you can know someone who's gay and probably not know they're gay for years and years becuse guess what, it's sexuality, it doesn't come up all the time, it's not something transparent that get's waved around 24/7, and if it is, that means that you probably don't have much going on for you as an actual person to begin with."
I just want to emphasize the poetry of how DD says this in a time where people come to his stream just realizing "Wait, you're gay?" after watching his stuff for a long time, he's the best proof of what he's talking about at that moment, it's sad to see what happened after all he was guilty of was telling the truth.

i agree with the vast majority of what he said, except for the part where he said that if you have really made a good gay character you won't even know they were gay, it really depends on the type of story that is made, just like how you have straight characters who will develop crushes or have girlfriends, boyfriends, or spouses, you'll have the same thing happen with gay characters sometimes too, but yeah it definently depends on the type of story and characters being told
I think what hes trying to say is not having that be the gimmick and not having it forced on you
Sometimes it feels like it’s just a bunch of straight people trying to pander towards a non-straight audience.
lmfao bc it is!
I get what you mean…
As a fellow mo, getting pandered to by straight people who want to be an ally is almost a worse feeling than being discriminated against for being gay in the first place. Last thing I want to be known for is by which reproductive organ I put in my mouth, and if that's all you can use to quantify a relationship with me as a person then you are deeply flawed.
Arin always seemed extremely fake they were pandering for money got called out for it weaponized their fans as always and doxxed ding dong... smh
I love ding dong❤️ I miss him and joooolian on oneyplays
It’s not the same now
As a gay dude, I seriously can’t stand when people consolidate my sexuality into a fucking marketing tactic.
I mean, that’s all pride is anymore these days too - just a chance for people to market to us :/
My biggest issue w dream daddy back in 2017 and now is that it’s a game with OBVIOUSLY sexual tones/content, but bc game grumps knew their audience was mostly teens, they shyed away from any actual sex or compelling storylines, and that to me is the most disappointing :/ it ends up being a weirdly sanitized version of a dating sim, and when you play through it it comes off as being uh... not that full of content 😬.
