Thanks for the heads up! A couple of additional bits of info. The high register singing part is in a traditional mode, possibly even with traditional lyrics. Lyrics are available on a fan video on the Rumitman channel. Interesting that you touched on modal aspects of the song. I'm no expert on Indonesian music but there's certainly a strong, almost 'world' music modality running through VoB's music which, I guess, they've incorporated , consciously or unconsciously, from their musical heritage. Finally, I regret I can't help you with UK gigs. My days of treading the boards in the Northeast of England and throughout Scotland, both in bands and as a solo act, are on temporary hold as I have diverted my attention to writing. Consequently, I'm out of touch with promoters. Best of luck to you and keep up the great work on the channel. Aw ra best fae Scotland!
I think it's beyond modal - modal scales are (approximately) different subsets of a 12 tone equal-tempered scale (the classic modes are Greek and Greek tuning was slightly different from ours - look up: Pythagorean Comma. Of course, you may know this stuff better than I do, in which case you can tell me what I misstated : - ) To my ear, Mighty Island alternates frequently between major and minor - my ear can't fit what's happening into a single mode or a melodic or harmonic minor (i.e., lotsa accidentals and not the same ones you'd get with a melodic or harmonic minor). In this respect, it reminds me of the Wexford Carol (which otherwise sounds very different, but has a similar alternation). Mr. Emmerson may know the Wexford Carol, but it's not heard much on this side of the pond (you can find a great version by Alison Krauss, Yo-Yo Ma and Natalie MacMaster). Again, I invite people who know what the heck they're talking about to participate (as opposed to me, who just googled up this stuff) I suspect the stuff she's singing in a higher pitch and a lighter voice is not in a western scale. If VoB grew up with local Sundanese music and Islamic cantillation (which seems likely), they grew up with (at least) 3 non-western scales. Gamelan music uses the pelog and slendro scales, which are respectively 7 tones out of a 9 tone equal tempered scale and all 5 tones of a 5 tone equal tempered scale (on average - the exact scale can vary from village to village, sez Wikipedia). Islamic cantillation uses a microtonal Middle Eastern scale, unless it's done differently in Indonesia (I haven't (yet) managed to dig up anything on that). Siti comments on Instagram about a particular piece of traditional Sundanese music that she hears Widi listen to every day (Sabilulungan). You can go to Wikipedia and play examples of the pelog and slendro scales. They sound pretty strange to my ear. And if Marsya or Widi wanted to play in these Sundanese scales, they'd have to bend pitches, 'cuz Western fretted instruments are set up for 12 tone equal temperament. When Marsya's singing, of course, she can choose whatever scale she wants.
Gabo Rossini (on his yt channel) recently took a look at/listen to God Allow Me (Please) to Play Music, trying to pick out the scales and modes used in that piece. I can't vouch for his accuracy (my ear for that stuff is not as good as it once was) but people commenting here who are interested in that sort of thing might want to check out his analysis. He speaks in Spanish (in spite of having a name that sounds very Italian (and operatic) to me), but the English subtitles are good. (Also, I told Mr. Rossini that if he's interested in this sort of thing, he should check out Mighty Island)
@@rogeremmerson for another somewhat detailed dissection, search for: JW Soundworks First time hearing Voice Of Baceprot - Reaction & Breakdown I'll have to go back and give Kentut Merdeka another listen. It's been a while. It seems the tune is particularly popular in Indonesia.
@@robertpraetorius4007 thanks for this. The popularity of Kentut Merdeka in Indonesia may attributable to its complex time signatures which seem to reflect indigenous music forms. It was also a protest song aimed against proposed government legislation that would have seriously what was permissible musically in Indonesia. Certainly not VoB's music. That moment has passed and the legislation failed. Given its very specific message and location in time, VoB have been reluctant since to play it live. I've emailed them about it and got a response suggesting that they may well readmit it to their set list in the future.
VOB, even though the music is metal, is still polite on stage, VOB...Marsya, Widi and Siti are young people who are smart with their music and have achievements as they say...the three are young Indonesian musicians
You missed the reaction to the track AGE ORIENTED from VOB..(live from Transmusicales de Rennes 2021) so please, I'm interested in your opinion..it's a phenomenal song..you are nice guys, greetings from Bosnia!
Thanks Roger. I also waiting offset Era reaction. Christ and Sam always great react and heard lot things. Dont forget to continue next song God Allow Me.
The ethereal vocal at 9:32 min is again showcasing their traditional Indonesian or Sundanese vocal style melodies. The same as they did for the base solo in their 'Kawani' instrumental track.
fighting injustice in their rights in the past they were often bullied they fought with music marsya as the leader siti as the drummer beat my heart and widi the queen of slapping and taping played with her own character there are so many rock bands in Indonesia but this one is very different with others I like them
It's been a long time since a band impressed me like these girls have. I'm always impressed when a 3 piece can produce so much sound, and to sing lead and play guitar is hard. I only found them today and I'm already hooked. They deserve large audiences and big arenas. Enjoyed the reaction guys 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻❤
- Widi VoB was signed as one of Official Warwick Artist. - Sitti VoB the drummer signed as one of Official Paiste Cymbal Artist. - Marsya once upon a time in year 2022 - Guitar support by Jackson. - Now Marsya VoB 🎸 RADIX brand, local made. - the new song title : Mighty Island.
