Tin Pan Alley (West 28th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues) was where music publishers, composers and songwriters worked from about 1885 to roughly the 1950's. Many notable people found work at Tin Pan Alley including George and Ira Gershwin, Harry Warren, Vincent Youmans, Al Sherman, Irving Berlin, Dorothy Fields, Gussie Lord Davis, and many more.

This is just terrific. There is shockingly little on RUclips related to the physical location of this, the real, actual Tin Pan Alley. Thank you for posting this crucially important and shockingly neglected historical nerve center in its current state.
Every single popular song, jazz tune, even hip-hop, contemporary “R&B”, Blues, Broadway show tunes... Music that continues to be deeply embedded in our culture and has had impact around the world… It was all literally born here and disseminated to the rest of the world from this one block, expanding of course when The Brill Building and so on were established.
London certainly had a lively Tin Pan Alley of their own, but this is really the mother source, the true birthplace of popular music.

Great little intro to this cornerstone of American music. Nice background for my study on the history of music publishing. Much appreciated.

Shouldn't there be a permanent public piano in Tin Pan Alley due to its musical historical importance?
