Are all theories the same?

- Hi Everyone!
Today we’re talking about theory!
I will talk about
1) What is theory
2) Why theories aren’t created equally
3) Is there a theory better than the rest?
-----------------------
When I chose a school I didn’t know there were so many theories out there. I chose a school that was local, brick & mortar and had the resources I was looking for at the time.
-----------------------
I didn’t know that I also had to research theories and I also didn’t know how many available Facebook groups existed to answer my questions.

Sorry, I had to repost this video. :)
Very good video. I just happened to stumble across it.
Where I live we didn’t have any court reporting schools near me. So, after doing a lot of research, I decided to enroll with the Court Reporting At Home (CRAH) school which was a self-paced online steno school. At the time I was working a 40-hour job during the day.
I think the CRAH program was really good and they guided you into your chosen field (court reporting, CART, captioning) and provided the appropriate materials. The theory they taught was a slightly modified version of StenED.
Your video will help a lot of future steno students 👍🏻.

Thank you!! 😁🙏
"You're only competing with the skill you had yesterday." Cest quote I have ever heard :)
Excellent and vital video! Thank you!
Thank you for spending the time to create this content :) I've been teaching myself Magnum along with parts of Ed Varallo's Realtime Writer's Manual. The Magnum text is a bit weak on the word-building side (but it teaches phrases and briefs right from the outset) and Ed Varallo's text gives a nice set of theory rules that one can use to regularize the writing of words for which there is no brief (these techniques seem to be taught from the beginning in most theories other than Magnum, i.e. StenEd, Phoenix). Of course I'm pretty new at this, so my path is not necessarily a recommendation!
Aaron Steno I totally agree with you.. it’s nice to have different theories out there teaching us different ways to be able to write. I love the magnum Steno phrases, they are game changers. And I also love being able to use both hands to their full extent 🤗 you definitely have a great base from the start.
I'm learning Magnum Steno through the StenoKey program. Honestly, I feel like I hit the jackpot with both my choice of theories and my program. I couldn't be happier. Thanks again for putting up quality content! I love it.
Katiana is doing amazing things with that program! I agree you definitely hit the jackpot 😁😁
I am looking into a good program. Is that theory and speed building in one or just theory?
Most programs teach theory first and then you start speed building. If you’re looking to do both simultaneously, then I highly recommend www.stenokey.com
This was SO helpful to me ❤ thank you! I’m also in CareerLuv learning Magnum Steno theory 😊
Thanks!
Hey stenohood,
I stumbled here entirely by accident while I was looking up written shorthand, and I think I'm kinda hooked on this whole steno thing. I'm not a court student or anything, but I think I do want to get a general idea about this. What theory intro book can you recommend for me to just get a general feel on the subject?
Some of the common theory books are StenEd, Magnum Steno, or Phoenix otherwise, you can get more information on Facebook Groups for Steno 🤗
as an actual court reporter, what do you think of Plover theory?
Hello.. i am a stenographer student.. i am confused and i really just wanna know if i really need to take gregg shorthand seriously or i should really focus on steno machine itself because gregg shorthand is not really necessary in the court?
Hi Steno hood!
I was wondering if you had any advice for me. I recently just graduated from Chapman University with a BA in psychology and graphic design. I really want to become a court reporter and/or trial consultant however I fear that I will have to go back to school for a good amount of time and spend a lot more money as I am already in debt from my Bachelors's degree. I just finished school after six years and was ready to start my career but now I feel that it is further down the line from me. Do you have any recommendations for me as far as what type of education to approach next, being someone with a BA psychology and graphics background, and what certifications and licenses I should begin studying and applying for? Any advice is welcomed, thank you so much!

Carly Mooshian oh man that’s a loaded question. Send me and email and I can give you some resources. Stenotypedynomite@gmail.com
I'm on semester two of learning Phoenix theory. Love it so far honestly! I learned basic Sten Ed doing Project Steno last summer.
That’s great to hear! If it all makes sense to you, then you’ll do great! Keep practicing that theory so you have a solid base when you begin speed building 😁
@@Stenohood Speed Building is just around the corner! Thanks for the tip and good to hear from you! :)
@@chez0788 wowzer! That’s when the real fun begins!! 😀
@@Stenohood Am I going to get my butt kicked? Lol.
I hope not. 😀 If you have a good theory foundation, it’s possible that you’ll fly through speeds ☺️
What is your opinion of steno key?
thanks for the help. thinking i may want to train for realtime early so I could have more freedom of movement and flexibility. I may need to choose a theory that requires less chords. Would be more difficult at the beginning, but would help me get that speed later
Yes, learning a theory that teaches shorter strokes might be challenging at first, but you’ll definitely gain speed quickly. Good luck on your journey!!
I'm going to be learning Stened theory.
Oh yay! Make sure you practice every concept in your theory so you have a strong foundation and you’ll be prepared for speed building when you get there 😁
I'm using Moody Method theory
I was in the same boat. I chose a program based on price and location. The theory that I initially learned was StenEd. Of course, since I had to transfer to another school, the school I chose doesn't use StenEd. Instead, they've made up their own theory and that's what I'm learning now. Honestly, so far, I prefer StenEd. Compared to this new one, it seems to have less strokes and it's way more logical to me so therefore, the theory was easier to learn. Unfortunately, I failed it (due to low enrollment, I couldn't retake it at the same school, hence the transfer) due to information overload. I think if the theory was taught in multiple semesters instead of just one, I would have done better. But oh well. What's done is done. I do like the idea of combining theories to suit my own style. I think that's exactly what I'll do. Great suggestion and thank you.
Thank you for sharing your journey! I know you’re not alone in having to switch schools. The cool thing about learning Steno is that at the end of the day, we all write differently. We use the techniques and methods that work for us as long as we provide an end product with accuracy is all that matters. Keep going no matter what and keep me posted on your journey
@@Stenohood Thanks and I will! I'm pretty stoked that I've made it this far.
Have you heard of StarTran Realtime Theory? Any thoughts?
Hi! I haven’t heard of it. Where is this theory taught?
Are all theories compatible with the Case CATalyst software? I'm going to start an A to Z program on july and i am really confuse about how theory works😅
Congrats on enrolling in A-Z. Yes, all theories can be entered in your software 😁😁 theory is pretty much the method showing you how to press certain keys on your machine to represent specific sounds. You’ll do great!! Keep me posted 😁
@@Stenohood thankyou so much! Love your contents it inspires me a lot😄
Theory selection really doesn't seem to mean much. Pick one and get on with it. You will optimize as you specialize.
Absolutely 😁
Have you tried plover?
I haven’t yet, but it’s definitely on my list! 😁😁😁😁 have you? How is it? Tell me more
@@Stenohood oh no.. I haven't, but I'm planning on learning steno through that system, it's more accessible for someone like me who's not a court reporter but still needs the speed (data encoder)
@@julz19 yes I’ve heard great things about it I’m eager to try it also
I'm Moody Method Theory
How do you like that theory?
How about Plover?
I’ve heard great things about plover, but never tried it personally 😁
StenEd is my theory rn.
How do you like it?
@@Stenohood I like it because it seems conflict free but then again I haven't studied any other yet. One at a time. Maybe in the future I'll check out other ones. What's yours? I know you mentioned you went to a workshop; I'll definitely do that once I'm in the higher speeds.
@@violetromero430 conflict free is great for real time. 😁 I learned Roberts Walsh Gonzales.. it was also conflict free but very stoke intensive 😆
