As a Swedish person I have to tell you two things.
1: the daim-cake is not at all a cheese cake, it's an almondcake with butter-cream, this will be important if you try to make your own as you said you would.
2: the oatly (orange/mango) is in fact a vegan milk substitute. There also is a plain one (very tasty) but their best by far is the chocolate one.

don't know if Lidl in the UK has country/ region themed weeks also, but in the Netherlands they do and when they are featuring scandinavian produce, they have meatballs in the frozen food section in 1 kg bags and i think they are delicious, we also have a similar product to the herring, over here is is pickled in a vinigar based brine, also something most foreigners don't like, just like Barry's "favourite" black licorice.

Hey, Barry! If you're interested there's this cake in Norway called a _Success Cake/Tart_ (also known as "Cake with yellow frosting") which has an almond base I think would work wonderfully with the Daim cake:
All you need to do is make a sort of meringue from 8 egg whites whisked together with 300 grams of icing sugar, add 300 grams of finely chopped/blended almonds and bake it in a preheated oven at 175 ºC for about 35 minutes.
If you're interested in the yellow frosting then that's 8 egg yolks, 2 dl double cream/heavy cream, 250 grams of sugar and one and a half teaspoons of vanilla sugar brought to a simmer on low heat then let cool in room temperature a bit before you mix in 300 grams of cubed tempered butter by hand (the cream should be cool enough that the butter doesn't melt). At this point you can either cut the cake in half and put half the frosting in the middle and the other on top, or just leave the cake in one piece and put all the frosting on top. Once the cake is frosted we like to use a fork to make lines in the frosting for decoration before cooling it in the fridge till serving.
Really hope you make that Daim cake recipe, as I absolutely love the frozen one, and I've been wanting to try my hand at making a homemade one for quite some time now.

  • @lisaintheskywithdiamonds7058
    @lisaintheskywithdiamonds7058 6 лет назад +3

Ahh, you're doing the Kalles wrong! :D Try it (just a pea size bit) on a soft boiled egg, or on cooked cold potato. Try slicing the egg or the potato on a piece of buttered bread, and a little bit of Kalles on top. Some people put Kalles on sliced cheese sandwiches, but I think that's gross :) The pickled herring should be eaten with boiled potatoes, sour cream and chopped chives. And only eat the fish, the black bits are allspice peppercorns and are just there to spice the fish in the pickle juice. Some people have lingon sylt with their herring, but I think that's an aqquired taste ;)
If you go some other time, try the gingerbread snaps, and put some blue cheese on top (for example Stilton)! Perfect Christmas finger food, to go with your Glögg, Swedish glüewein.
And try pan frying the meatballs, they get a little crispier on the outside. Leftover meatballs from the fridge are awesome just sliced on a piece of buttered bread. You can also get "Rödbetssallad" at IKEA, which is a beet root sallad with mayo, which is awesome as a topping on your meatball sandwich.
    Enjoy!

  • @quaddo

The Caviars you tried are similar to Marmite/Vegemite in that a little goes a long way.
You maybe won't like it anyway, but the smoked roe one works best with hard cheese and butter on the rye bread.

We normally eat Kalles with boiled eggs (either on their own, or on top of the rye bread). Rye bread + Swedish Prästost (a cheese you also find at IKEA) + cucumber is truly a treat. We eat the herring on all our big national holidays (Midsummer, Christmas, Easter), it should preferably be enjoyed with boiled potatoes (with melted butter on top), sour cream and chives. Love how you pronounce Pågen! (And by the way, us swedes never put icing on our cinnamon rolls - that's an American invention). Thanks for introducing some Swedish food to the world! :D

I hope you took some of the commenters advice and tried the kaviar with eggs, it's like the best way to eat boiled eggs imo. You can also mash up an egg with some kaviar and mayo, to make a super simple (though slightly runny) egg salad to put on your toast, or dip it in, depending on how runny it ends up being.

John King there is no cheese in that "cheesecake" from ikea thou. It should be a nutty base and some vanilla cream/sauce, chocolate and Daim bar goodness.

I'm Swedish, and Never have I ever done my meatballs in the oven ^^
You fry them in a pan with some butter, and homemade are so much better than IKEA's even if I like them too.
It's so easy to do at home though. I know everyones home recepies differ a little, but this is a pretty generic one.
500g of mince of your choice. (mostly mixed beef and pork)
    1 egg
    1 dl of milk
    0,5 dl of breadcrumbs
chop half an onion into small pieces. (Or leave them out and use some onion powder instead if you're a weirdo like me and can't stand the consistency of onions or have kids who don't like it.)
Season with salt, pepper(mostly white pepper but I tend to use black) and allspice after taste.
(I also tend to add 1-2 tablespoons of cream into my mixture as that makes them taste juicier in my opinion.)
Mix it all real well, make your mixture into small balls, fry them and done~
I mostly eat meatballs with regular boiled potatoes and not mashed, gräddsås wich translates to cream sauce, and ofcorse lingonberry jam. Gräddsås is actually also really easy to do at home. You don't have to buy the powdered version from IKEA.
    A recepie for Gräddsås is
    1 dl of cream
    30 g of butter
    30 g of wheat flour
    4 dl of meat stock
    1 teaspoon of chinese soysauce.
salt and ground white pepper after taste and there you have it~
And it's totally fine to not like things like sill/hearing and Kalles Kaviar. I don't like that either.
Love how you called pÅgen pagen ^^ I fully understand that Å, Ä and Ö are very hard/strange to pronounce when you're not used to them, but I can't help but to love hearing people from the UK and America try.

The cacao Oatly is THE BEST chocolate milk!
I'm not that much of a chocolate fan, and this drink doesn't leave a milky slime in the back of your throat like regular coco.
I would actually very much like to learn how to make an oatmilk like the coco oatly, it says it's just cacao, milk and oats...

Tesco sell those Gifflar now, I recently bought a bag and made the mistake of leaving the open bag in the kitchen, came down half an hour later to find my dad had eaten them all.

Ikeas chicken meatballs are the best thing ever! The Kalles-fishthing is best with hardboiled egg! And the other fish with till is good with the mashed potatoes 😁😁 love you guys!! (greetings from Finland)

I grew up in Wisconsin which was home to a lot of Scandinavians and they would sell pickled herring by the lb in the deli. I remember it only vaguely and I remember loving it. But I don't think I'd like it if I tried it now
