Good pick! Love the band, love the song. Some of their work is like Dream Theater, but I think they’re at their best when channeling more old-school prog with lots of creative whimsy. Has a Genesis, King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Yes flavor along with the more modern influences I suppose. Cockroach King is an iconic song IMO.

YEEES ! Haken is one of my absolute favorites and Ray is a beast on the drums. He got even better now, it's not even funny anymore. Easily one of the best ones around at the moment. Phenomenal music, phenomenal drummer. I took a little lesson with him after a show here in Germany and he is such a cool and relaxed guy and such an educated drummer !
Also maybe check out more recent Haken stuff because this song is not their typical sound.
But I am very glad that you enjoyed it :)
EDIT: Regarding the writing, he told me that this was the first album where he composed the drum parts with a software. On previous albums the parts came along while writing together with the band, live in a room.
If I remember correctly he said that a few sections in the songs from this album happened while playing with the band but a lot of it was conceived in a notation software (like guitar pro etc.)
He then had to learn the parts that he wrote and there were a few sections that troubled him a bit so he had to put it a lot of work.

I would disagree, while the 80's theme of the album definitely sounds different their other albums, I think this song really defines their sound with all the different elements that are in it.
Darn I'm jealous af Ray is awesome, I don't actually play drums I just spastically hit the air and "beatbox" (use the term loosly because I try to sound like drums and do it differently to a traditional beatboxer) to it, maybe one day I'll actually pick up drums and get it out of my system, then I may also get a lesson from Ray.

I recently saw Haken for the fourth time and they really are extraordinary. 6 members all more talented than the other. Watching Ray Hearn especially is quite a treat. So tight and so accurate. Last time I saw them they played this song and in the middle switched into “Owner of a Lonely Heart” by Yes which sounded almost exactly like Yes, even vocally. Then they went back into this. Amazing.

Thanks Nathan, I love Ray, in this song it feels like there is heaps of room but no need to fill it. Affinity, the album this song is on, is an album dedicated to the 80's sound mixed with their modern prog metal writing. Don't quote me, but I believe the inspiration was that they thought that 80's music was severely underrated so they made the album. I like all their albums so biased opinion it's a good album with an interesting mix of songs. The architect and endless knot are probably the heaviest.
Just so you know with every concert they encore with Crystalized which is a whopping 20 minute song. I think DT Octovarium is about that long too. I'm always impressed with songs that long but then I think what's the difference of remembering 1 song 20 minute or 4 songs 5 minutes right?
Last word which I mentioned before, channel favourite Alex rudinger did a cover of Nil by Mouth by this band, really good👌

Man, the 80's flavored part towards the end totally sounds like its from the animated Trasformers the Movie soundtrack, composed by Vince Dicola. It definitely sounds like the Decepticon theme during the epic battle scene, check it out. Compare 7:38 through to 8:38 with tracks 7 & 8 from the Transformers Soundtrack titled Autobot/Decepticon Battle & City Under Siege. Skip to the 1:21 mark to hear the Decepticon theme. Someone from Haken must have been influenced by this movie, which has an incredible soundtrack BTW. Not saying its plagiarism, but the similarities are uncanny.
