George did care about the fans. Didn’t always do it right but he had the passion.
And he wanted to win at all costs
The same cannot be said about Hal.
To be fair, the Yankees dynasty was built by gene Michael at the time that George was forced into a hiatus..
Amen Rich thank you so much. My sentiments exactly. Miss George. How Hal could not keep his dad's legacy and the New York Yankees the evil empire.
Michael Kay adding the “for some reason” in his question just shows how much of a Yankee boy/Corporate clown he is. I also love that Hal thinks the pinnacle of Yankees baseball is how they were playing in May 2023.
Careful now, yankee boy doesn’t like to be called that name 😭😭
One thing has stayed the same, Brian Cashman.
Fire him there way too long
Hal, has no idea to go run a championship franchise. This organization is long and far apart from a ring.
“Cashman is like an uncle to me” -Hal
And that’s the problem.
@@gabrielvazquez1691yep. Hal gotta find the guts to kick uncle to the curb.
@@justarandominternetdude2579 heck yeah he does
Rich is unfortunately leaving out crucial context. That "attitude" from George Steinbrenner didn't cause the Yankees to start winning. They continued to be a garbage team until Steinbrenner was banned from participating in the day-to-day management of the Yankees in 1990 because of his conduct toward Dave Winfield. It was only after he was banned and out of the way that Yankees GM Gene Michael gained the freedom to start building a winning team. By the time George was reinstated in 1993, the Yankees had begun posting winning records again.
George gave the team a sense of urgency. The Yanks didn’t have a winning record when George was gone.
You don’t count 1976-1978?
George was a baseball fan, Hal is a business man.
Yes, certainly there is an injury problem. But this team's problems are deeper than that. They have a bad baseball problem. They don't play the game right. Aside from an occasional stolen base by IKF, it's nothing but wait for a home run. That will always be bad baseball, and especially in the post-season.
In this star filled media era, I think fans really do forget that Judge can’t win games by himself. Baseball is the pinacle team sport
Facts
Also hard to blame injuries when the team is old and has acquired players with significant injury histories.
To be fair Rizzo, DJ and Stanton have to do their part consistently for this team to be decent and none of them have. (Rizzo really only when Judge has also been playing ). Nobody is stepping up and offensive approach overall is old tired and flawed (hole run or bust). Hal and brass are misguided in their signings, team construction and philosophy of play. So only a sea change will work to awaken this team to improve.
It's a shame Hal will never hear this...
I like the way Hal talked. He isn’t irrational as to making decisions. He doesn’t allow emotions to control his mind... that’s a good thing.
He doesn’t have a sense of urgency, that’s a horrible thing
I heard the whole interview it’s clear Hal is satisfied with the results he doesn’t care you can clearly hear it in his voice no passion for winning, nothing like his dad! Fans need to stop supporting them until he is forced to make changes or sell the team!
George S. was kind of a piece of trash of a person.
About not winning a championship in a certain decade, the Yanks did not win one in the 80s either. Nor did they win one until 1923. So, there have been four decades when they did not win the World Series.
The correct stat is decade without a WS appearance
Think he meant to say with out a WS appearance.
Not a Yankee hater, not a Yankee lover. But baseball is better when NYY is in the mix.
I'm so glad I've been proven right that this Yankee team was never gonna win a World Series with Judge and Stanton.
Still think they can win with judge but injuries suck. Personally would rather have a more consistent hitter then staton but don’t think that’ll happen
The construction of this team by Cashman has been horrible for over a decade. Until he’s gone, nothing is gonna change.
Couldn't agree more Rich.
Well said
Billy Martin:
Hire!
Fire!
Hire!
Fire!
Fire him from another team!!!
😂
General George expected his Yankees to go 162-0, sweep through the playoffs and win the World Series in a 4 game sweep…then comeback the next season, and do it again…that’s the kind of commitment and attitude I want from my owner…out of touch or not, it’s about winning, and the Yankees are way, way over due.
A 54 yo Yankee fan, who has experienced 7 WS Championships and 9 games lost in the course of those 7 championships including 1 back-to-back and 1 three-peat is ranting about what now? Respectfully, I don't accept your outrage or George Steinbrenner being a good role model. He was an A-hole in the 90s and the Yankees were trash in the 80s. Yankee fan being a Yankee fan.
Yanks problems begin with their overrated GM. He gets a new deal because we are contenders every year. Contenders for the playoffs maybe. But with a 260 million plus payroll you should win. He signs and trades for injured players. Tampa GM gets 100 million yet they whup our butts regularly. They keep their young players stuck in the minors. Why is Florial stuck in the minors. Giradi got canned because he couldn’t get us a Championship but Cashmans still here. 13 yrs later.
George Steinbrenner and the "new" DH rule was the reason I became a Yankee fan. Born in Brooklyn, I was literally in the middle of National League hell. Between the Mets fans and living less than a mile from the site of the old Ebbets Field, you did not wear pinstripes in my neighborhood. I didn't care. George brought the fire and the passion and the desire to win which, as a nine-year-old, was exciting to me. 50 years later, the Yankees are still my heart, but since George's passing, I can't watch baseball any more. When he surrendered control to his sons, everything changed. George was a fan. Hal is a CEO. That's the big reason for the drought.
Like it or not these are words of Wisdom.
I love Rich. Great for an LA guy
Rich is 100% right.
He described the typical Yankee offense perfectly: Succeed in hitting a bunch of homeruns - win some games. But in between, absolutely *feeble* offensive displays that often result in just 3 or 4 hits the whole night. I've been a Yankee fan my whole life; but now it's gotten to the point that I'm genuinely not enjoying watching or listening to them anymore. Their style of hitting - taking big homerun swings *all the time* - is boring to infuriating to me.
Remember when Yankees were up 3 games to 0 going into the 9th. Do I have to go any further.
Eisen for Yankees GM!!!
Hal better call up Patrick bet David for some advice
The advice is simple, fire Cashman.
George was a Purdue Boilermaker, can Rich accept that ?
“ THIS TEAM NEEDS AN ENEMA”
As a Yankee fan I am so fed up with Hal. I don’t see the Yankees being what they were unless he’s gone/wakes up from how mid he runs this team. The organization needs a shake up.
The non stop excuses for this team...just shameful😔
Hal DOESNT care about WINNING its ALL about making money. That’s why this roster is populated with a struggling rookie and a washed up third baseman. Thirteen YEARS of loosing doesn’t bother him that’s why Cash is his GM
Yup, he wins every year....financially.
5:16 - "They just finished the first decade in the history of their team without winning a championship." Not true, the Yankees didn't win one in the 1980s. But, they did at least win a pennant that year (1981).
Vince Lombardi was correct. Winning is the only thing. Mr. Lombardi hated losing. No one ever said we're number two.
Rich expressing how Yankee fans are feeling. Maybe if he called Hal and played that tape of his Father he would not be so confused why fans are upset. Cashman would not have been allowed to keep making the bad decisions he has made if George were still around.
Preach, Rich.
I love Dave Winfield...Mr. May Is funny tho 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Has no clue. This is the state of the Yankees now. No shame. Yankee boy Michael
Revisionist history. In between The Bronx Zoo era and the Torre era, there was a full decade of futility where this team missed the playoffs each year, where the fans, players, press and employees couldn't stand George, where George was banned from baseball.
No, you don't want to go back to that.
George Steinbrenner also bought a failing Yankees organization, renovated Yankees stadium, and built a 2 time World Series Champion. All you said about Gene Michael was true, as well.
You’re right, Yankees fans don’t wanna go back to an owner that actually cared about winning. You’re the definition of loser. Go trade places with George, you won’t be missed
You must want the Yankees to turn into what the oakland a's are then.
@@jayp4114 He won 7 championships, not 2.
@@emmanuelwood8702 I'm referring to the immediate 2 World Series Wins in 1976-1977, not long after he purchased the Team. If you recall, George Steinbrenner was banned from Baseball, during the Gene Michael ran Championship teams.
Imagine getting salty when the Yankees have 3 times the payroll of the rays and Os and being below them 🤣
The organization needs to be torn down from at absolutely every level.
I honestly don’t believe an owner can be engaged with a team at all, and not be absolutely livid at the tens of millions of dollars in salary that the Yankees have wasted in recent years.
If you want to applaud George for writing checks, fine. Buf the guy was a complete idiot personnel wise. He would have traded Jeter if he weren't talked out of it. The best thing that ever happened to the Yankees was him getting suspended and allowing the front office to build a team properly without the meddling. There has to be a happy medium between George and Hal
Yanks didn’t have a winning season when George was gone. If you’re gonna be this much of a loser then go join George, you’re that useless
Facts!!
Hal, cmon man. Do you even watch the games? Please just keep your thoughts to yourself in the future. Man, you are lost.
What's a championship? Is it a pennant, because they didn't win a World Series in the 80s.
AMEN
I laugh when people talk about how they are tired of toxic masculinity but then point out all of the individual places where alpha males are the missing ingredient.
Fire Cashman and hire a good GM.
They need to take talent from the Rays and Astros.
They need to poach from the brain trust of either of these organizations. The Astros let their GM go after winning the WS last year and he also worked for the Rays, but the Blue Jays hired him.
@@njyankeesfan Fire Cashman
Until cashman Boone and the entire analytical department, we have no shot. Hal needs to wake up
Either make sweeping changes Hal, I mean fire Cashman, Boone or sell the team!
Back then the Yankees would sign you, if you had talent. Trever Bauer would have been a Yankee now if George was here!
Give the team to Jennifer to run. She has bigger balls than Hal
We gotta get healthier. The Yankee mantra since…???…early 80s at least.
They need a last place losing record this year... maybe that will finally cause a change.
Hey rich load this up for the jets owner at the end of next year when they stink too haha
George was an egomaniac who only knew how to solve problems by throwing money at them, and it started with the historical signing of Reggie Jackson. And Rich knows this. Do you really think that he had a magic wand and could will the team to victory with his heavy-handed ownership? You don't know sports if you think that's the case. Notice how that didn't work after Reggie, and the team didn't have another parade until 'Steingrabber' was suspended from baseball and Stick Michael took over, and built the Jeter Dynasty.
Steingrabber?! You’re so witty and clever! You also failed to mention that the Yankees can’t even get to a World Series with Hal running everything. Was it intentional or you just too stupid to live? I’m gonna go with stupid
Until Cashman is no longer in charge of the baseball decisions. Nothing is gonna change with with team.
If George was alive today, he'd fire his own son, then send him to trade school.
We need new staff from scouts to the front office. Out with the old. God, i want a no nonsense winner like jeter in front office
yeah cause Jeter was so great at running the Marlins lmao
@@lhfirexHe actually had them in the playoffs in 2020 and they’re 2nd place in the division right now mostly due to the talent he amassed. So he would be a welcome addition.
Speaking for all baseball fans that aren't Yankee fans, GOOD. I don't feel bad at all. And I guarantee the rest of the country doesn't have one shred of sympathy.
Confused……. I think that’s the theme of this year for the Yankees…… the team as a whole is confused…. This lineup is confusing….. management is confused….. and this is why the Titanic of the Yankees is sinking
It's good the Yankees are out of it. Great for baseball when the most boring, overhyped, overly talked about teams like the Yankees and Red Sox are irrelevant so we can talk about actually good players and the success of other teams.
If you guys are gonna talk about baseball, talk about all the fun teams that aren't in NY or Boston that are killing it, like the Reds, Diamondbacks, Orioles, Rays, Giants, Rangers, or Braves. Those stories are a million times more interesting than flogging the same ESPN style garbage about the Yanks and the Sox.
Hal only cares about money,,,that's it!
Remember when Schembechler lost
Its only a GAME !......They lost all the good MoJo from the old stadium , no reason to build a new stadium
They didn’t win a championship in the 1980’s either. So this is the second decade
I think Champion pride stop after George. Now is just getting in only. We need pitching and hitting for many many years. wait up and smell the coffee.
Excuses, excuses, excuses. Tired of hearing it.
That why hal is clueless. Just sell the team to the one who cares.
There's got to be changes from the top because the Yankees are horrible. They're number 27 in league in batting averaging at .229 😮
The whole FO is woke and unmotivated set in their ways no energy no creativity no respect from players
Show me a good loser…….and I’ll show you a loser…….
Hal reminds me of Pinocchio. Only if he was a boy and only if he had thoughts and emotions…
hal doesn't get it the way his Dad did.
go get Shohei
😂😂😂
Boone needs to go
His Son doesn't know anything about Baseball ! He just inherit his title. Chico Escuela knows more about besbol then ,what's his name does ...BESBOL BIN BERI BERI GUD TU MEEEE. !
Yankees stink! So glad they only have one Series victory in 20 yrs
Miss the boss
We need to start boycotting Yankee games.. or have the bleacher creatures stop chanting all these underperforming players … and turn all their backs to the field
As an Astros fan. They could go another 15 years without winning anything and it still won't be long enough for me. U won titles when there were 16 teams in 1956 congratulations...
Go Chiefs
2nd decade…they never won in the 80s
If you count the 1900's (when they were called the Highlanders) and the 1910's, it's four total overall. But since they started winning in the 1920's, it would be two.
Rich, you're being a combination of disingenuous and revisionist. You know damn good and well that George Steinbrenner, revered as he is for being such a strident advocate for winning at all costs (and a color character at BEST, and a dirty, convicted crook at worst, wouldn't fly in today's MLB. They'd run him outta the league if he pulled that stuff today. Not to mention, the scales of the balance of power in professional sports have tipped.
Let's just accept it: the era of pinstripe domination is over. Jeter, Petite, Posada, Bernie Williams, Boomer Wells, Roger Clemens, those guys ain't walking through that door. Competitive balance is good for baseball. I love that the small market teams can hang with the big spenders. Buying championships ain't the way anymore.
And I say ALL this as a Bronx born and raised.
Michael Kay can't say what others are thinking because he's a yankees YES man. Or boy rather.
