I have come back to him singing this for years, and I have to say it’s one of my favorite comfort songs and renditions. I love it so much. (I did this show in college 10 years ago). Amazing.
I believe whole-heartedly that Kevin Smith Kirkwood does the best rendition of this song. I used this song to audtion to point loma nazarene university, and if I had not heard what he did with it, I would not have had the heart to belt it out. To really feel the song. Thank you Kevin. You are an inspiration.
What I like about this rendition is that Kevin actually looks like he's feeling the joy of it all. I've seen a lot of people singing this who look like they want slit their wrists o_O
This is certainly a different and admirable rendition. I think people are getting irritated because it wouldn't be appropriate in the context of the show. But this is a concert, and one with the composer present, so I think we should take it in stride.
It really was amazing, you truly have a spectacular voice. I'm terrible for being a creature of habit, and sticking to the score.. But! Like I said, truly an amazing performance :)
and 2:39 but then 2:51 HUH-??? WHITNEY? and then just right back home 3:13 i almost want to say its retro, like some johnny mathis sound, other than the EXQUISITE "belts" like 2:13
taking it up there, IMO, changes some of the intent of that particular part of the text/song....BUT, it was done amazingly, for keeping it in "that place" vocally, wouldn't have shown people what he could really do. I applud it, from a vocalist standpoint, out of context from the "book". It would have been "too much", in context. Good job!
Yes I am, Just because Gordon is in hospital as he writes/imagines the song it doesn't meant that he's not lost in the bliss of something he loves. If anything there is more reason to enjoy the escapism. Kevin seems to understand that as does John Barrowman and a few others but as I said many people seem to think it should be something sad.
Its an absolutely fantastic rendition of the song, and took impossible amounts of skill and talent, but I feel like it skips over the true source of this song's beauty: its simplicity.
I think this was a very good performance. especially hard in front of the composer. A couple of things that might have made it even better would have been to anchor on the high sections (if you did anchor, maybe a bit more would help. just makes it easier to reach) and making the onsets cleaner (I'd rather than hi'd) but thats being really picky. Out of context of the story gives you much more freedom with what you can do and you do it well. *claps*
What are you talking about "too high for him"?! This is obviously very high, yes but he pulls it off! And the octave jump was not written in... It is 100% choice....
Meh... Amazing belt, yeah... But I think those notes are usually good in small doses... Specially for a man, when you sing an entire chorus up there it kinda loses all the intensity and even becomes a little annoying... Then again though, this dude can BELT.
I think it's less the choice to change some of the line, and more the fact that this is too high for him, and he's roaming on a lot of pitches. Well, it's not too high, but his transition from chest to head voice is rough.
@kingofthecities ...I think a good actor needs to capture both, personally, or it's just boring.ANyways, I think this guy butchers it musically and vocally, so it's kind of irrelevant in my opinion, how he plays it at all.
LMAO. seriously. louder and higher isn't always better. there's beauty in restraint. i think that's what this song actually needs. i think he jumped the octave because he just plain sucks in the lower register. where the fuck is norm lewis when you need him?
I think this is absolutely awful. Yes, he has range. BUT his voice is not easy to listen to. This song is so simple and I think he ruined it. PLUS, he can't even riff. And sorry honey, buy some vibrato.
This absolutely sucks as a performance. How you can take a beautiful song like this and turn it into some half-arsed gospel crap is beyond me. Talk about ruining a song beyond all measure....
Tears literally running down my face
I have come back to him singing this for years, and I have to say it’s one of my favorite comfort songs and renditions. I love it so much. (I did this show in college 10 years ago). Amazing.
wow, i really wasn’t expecting him to go up the octave but that was so amazing. he elevated one of my favorite musical theatre songs

I love this interpretation
He's amazing!

Literally laughed out loud reading this. So true
Amazing
This song is insanely hard to perform because yearning is an emotion very hard to manufacture on demand.
This is certainly a different and admirable rendition. I think people are getting irritated because it wouldn't be appropriate in the context of the show. But this is a concert, and one with the composer present, so I think we should take it in stride.
holy shit right when you think he's sang his highest he goes even higher. So good
Good job dude! I like your voice!
Sailing to heaven! Sing Brah Man!
It really was amazing, you truly have a spectacular voice. I'm terrible for being a creature of habit, and sticking to the score.. But! Like I said, truly an amazing performance :)
During the first half of it I doubted him. The rest of it gripped me and wouldn't let go.
1:03 unreal tone, absolutely love that sound
and 2:39 but then 2:51 HUH-??? WHITNEY? and then just right back home 3:13 i almost want to say its retro, like some johnny mathis sound, other than the EXQUISITE "belts" like 2:13
Holy Crapppp :O:O AMAZING!!

My singing version of "I Rather Be Sailing" Chris Gnam
@ASchlink1990 Oh my Jesus, Darius de Haas is a god. Great taste!
Its an absolutely fantastic rendition of the song, and took impossible amounts of skill and talent, but I feel like it skips over the true source of this song's beauty: its simplicity.
ok the C sharp is amazing but then the to belt the D sharp is unbelievable.
its definitely a ballsy interpretation.
my singing teaching just asked me to learn this fuck
For the record, Bill isn't playing. But he is sitting there laughing his ass off.

@kskirkwood ...I don't really have much to say besides that I acted like a huge bitch and I apologize. :P You're a classy person.
17 people don't know what's up
A stirring performance -- but it doesn't sound like sailing.
Meh...

Not a fan of the octave shift. Give me Groff or the original Norm Lewis any day. Sorry.
same was not feeling that
+TripleXGold awww. : (
Jonathan groof sang it better❤❤

he said tepid and kevin said think again
