  • Today we are going to change out our bad generator for a new alternator in my 1971 VW Beetle Buddy. Let me tell you about alternator conversion kits. They aren't! There are so many other things you need! And I thought I had ordered them all. Boy was I wrong. But I did have a few parts on hand. So did we get it to work? Watch and see

    Loved the video. When you showed your spare carburetor with the reverse linkage on the accelerator pump, I didn't know that and I've been working on
    VW's for quite some time. I just happen to have a spare carburetor with that linkage setup, now I don't have to modify the alternator. Thanks so much for showing
    me something "NEW". I own a 1970 VW Beetle, her name is Shirley. You made me a subscriber.

      Thanks! Glad you learned something new :) I didn’t know either until I saw it.

    We converted mine to alternator. Unscrewed the two screws on fan shroud, took off carb, unscrewed the plate that holds the generator ,wiggled the shroud up pulled the gen and fan out. Didn’t even take the engine lid off

      It can be done. I pulled my engine to check on a couple other bits.

      @@Misunderstoodboygenius I’m glad you got things back and working!! I’d absolutely hate to drop the engine for any reason in mine. My husband hates my car 😂 all American to say the least. I can actually hear the cussing!

    My generator was 2 years old and started eating brushes. The last change the brushes lasted a couple weeks!

    Where did you get those connectors for the voltage regulator re-wire? I can’t find them anywhere.

      I’m pretty sure I got them at O’Reilly’s. Just big honkin connectors.

    What brand of kit did you bought?

      I’d have to dig to find exactly, but likely I got the kit from CIP1

    What is size of belt?

    • @Misunderstoodboygenius
      @Misunderstoodboygenius  2 года назад

      Boy I’m not sure. I’ll have to dig out the spare and see. There isn’t a hood “standard size” either. It depends on year and pully setup. The width is largely the same, but can also vary with pulleys.

    Moral of the story-- stick with the generator, argh 🤢

      I came this close! But I got a good deal on the alternator. If I had known the struggle I would have just spent the extra $100 and got a Bosch Genny.

      @@MisunderstoodboygeniusThe Bosch gen makes more than 10 amps less than an alternator so that means weaker headlights and less power for a decent stereo!
