The correct swinging arm bolt torque is 56Nm (not 100Nm). You should apply some Castrol Molub Alloy White Paste to the rubber. It will work better in sealing the boot and will last much longer than the one you used. If you want to do it all, remove the shaft and check the other edge. But, my advice is focus on checking your rubber boots are always in place and in good condition, from stock. Apply some silicon spray after washing your bike. If you live in a rusty environment then check the shaft completely every 20k km. Clean it with WD40 and then apply grease.
Hello. Nice video. Fast and clean. i have just one important step. Just put waterproof grease all arround the rubber boot edges in order to increase the waterproofing inside the swingarm.
Thanks for making a short video of this. There are way too many 20+ minute video. A video that long for such a simple job makes it look so overwhelming.
mine here in Ireland is a 2014, went for a shaft recall and i still stripped it afterwords to check. They hardly put any grease on the splines or on the rubber boot and didn't bother to change the final drive oil which is literally a 15 min job.
Thanks for the video. Just FYI: BMW changed the spec some years ago on the amount of final drive lubricant to use for servicing the final drive: 180ml. The video shows you using a 207ml can.
You've got my 2 favorite GS models in your Garage and eventually 1 day, I'll have 1 of them too, preferably the GS Rally one, in the meantime watching your great videos is a fantastic know how, thank you for sharing them!! Keep it up, you're doing great!!
Hello Nelio, they are fantastic bikes , love it. Thank you very much for your nice comment and watching my very young channel, I just doing this for fun and love to the Bike World. Again, thanks so much for your interest. Please share it.
Wouldn't you try to wire brush the rust off of those splines with some brake cleaner or solvent before you re-lube? Just asking . Would a small wire brush be safe? TY!
Brother Baden, thanks for all the GS videos you uploaded. Always so clear and detailed. Help a lot to the GS riders. By the way, may I ask what is the Urban GS year you riding. Is that a ride by wire or the traditional throttle?
@@baden-baden Command with wire , do you mean Fly By Wire or traditional cable throttle? I asked because your model seems to before 2021 so before that all Urban GS are all traditional cable trottle.
I try understand why put grease in drive Shaft,I just looking to buy r1200r and watching this maintenance, changing my mind about buying one of this..But still,i have a truck and never in 22y put grease in rear shaft-cardan..just don't make sense, because they fixed, yes there is movement but not to be destroying shaft even in 500000km,I dont know maybe truck is better made then a motorcycle...
I actually find this quite interesting that people are having such rusty final drive shafts. I have a late 2015 GS, and did mine for the first time a couple of weeks ago. I had no rust whatsoever. Done 27,000 miles. All sorts of weather, all seasons. The only thing I have not done is been through deep water that the swingarm is submerged. There was still evidence of lots of grease - both in the u-joint as well as the rubber boot.
I'm in the middle of doing this job on my bike, a 2015 GS with 38k all-weather miles. Like you I've found no evidence of rust on the splines and good evidence of lube. Pleasantly surprised after seeing all the horror stories.
It IS painfully evident that BMW do not at time of assembly lubricate the driveshaft assembly, front and rear. Absolutely unconscionable. Unforgivable.
I wanted to do this to mine but when I took it apart I have realized I can not remove the shaft from the hole because it is rusted. I have tried with WD40 and a bit of hammering but no success. Is it dangerous or bad for the bike if I continue driving like this. It looks like I have been driving it like this 2 years (20k kms). Can I remove the big screw on which everything is pivoting up/down and try pulling it out (2:39)? Any special tools needed for that?
Hi, All depends if you like to lubricate the spline between the transmission and the shaft, you did not need to remove it completely. Thanks for watching..!
@@baden-baden Actually, I had to take it off completely as the rust was so much at the final drive... luckily the dealership was able to free it with a torch... its going to be a fun project.

Isnt Glyzerin better for Rubber than silocon?
@@poliermaster yes, silicone is like glue... Too sticky, in my view
@@NachoGS i do not think he is Talking about the Silikon sealing Paste. He means Silikon for lubrication. Oil or Spray
I appreciate that you speed up the video when doing the obvious stuff, like bolt removal.

Wrong torque for swing arm/paralever bolt. Should be 56nm I think. 100nm is for the main bolt below it.
Hi, thanks for the specification , I will fix that in the description.
Baden - Baden no worries, I did the same thing before I came across this: www.jimvonbaden.com/Wethead%20Torques%204.pdf

What is the brand and specification on the lube that you used for there splines?
This tube contain Molybenum Disulfode grease for extreme Pressure EAC # ACC-MOLDM-GS-05 special for Splines and Axles.

Torque is not 100Nm it is 56Nm for the link bolt. The way you work makes me cry. And then some wonder when they buy used bike and it falls apart....
Thanks for your comment, is very constructive! Best regards from USA.
Once again the upper splines are not addressed. Half a job done.
100Nm for the swingarm?
Yes , according the specs : Bevel gears to swinging arm
M12 x 1.5 100 Nm
it is 56Nm not 100. How ever he will just argue and will not double check.:)
@@baden-baden This is different bolt. Do you know what swinging arm is?
What sort of service is that? You didn't even remove the drive shaft to inspect it, it's not a service it's just a rear spline grease🤔
